FINALLY after having wanted to do so for such a long time but never being actually organised enough to do it I have managed to keep a Top 50 chart for an entire year! I have not posted most of it here because I'm still not organised enough for that but I've kept it in check in a google sheet for myself and updated it every damn week of the year which I'm super proud of. So NOW for the first time ever I'm going to list up my top 200 songs of the year!

And what a year it has been! I have in the 52 weeks since the beginning of the year managed to have:

  • 34 different number one songs.
  • 86 different top 5 hits.
  • 141 different top 10 hits.
  • 454 different top 50 hits.

So it'll be very interesting for me to run down these songs seeing as more than half of them will not make this chart. The system I'm using to see where they chart is a combination of a points system combined with bonus points I give the songs after they leave the chart depending on whether I love them still or whether I had grown sick of them. The songs still in the chart at the end of the year will also get bonuses based on how much I predict I'll like or detest them in the coming year lol.

In the next post I'll recap my 34 number ones so that you can see what to expect on the chart to come.

The Number 1's Parade

This year had 34 number ones so lets recap which artists and songs hit the top spot. Here's the first five:

[01] January 4: MJ Cole featuring Freya Ridings — "Waking Up" (2 weeks)

MJ Cole and Freya Ridings both got their first number one hits at the beginning of the year with this hauntingly beautiful dance song. Freya had another hit later in the year with "Castles" (No. 25 in July) but MJ Cole hasn't graced us with his presence since and actually never had prior to this either. "Waking Up" was a bit of a surprise number one, no doubt aided by the slump in new music that usually takes place at the start of the year. MJ & Freya fought off competition from Mark Ronson & Miley Cyrus both of the weeks at the top spot but they had previously spent 2 weeks at number one in December 2018.

[02] January 18: Calvin Harris featuring Rag'n'Bone Man — "Giant" (1 week)

I'm still surprised to go back and see I only granted this collaboration one week at the top because it honestly feels like it was my favorite song the entire month of January. This will definitely be high up on the EOY chart given how absolutely massive it was both with me and the people around me (it was even my mom's fav song of the year lmao). Seeing how neither of them released any prominent music this year this was their only entry this year if you ignore Calvin's previous number one beast sticking around from 2018 ("Promises"). Just like MJ Cole and Freya did in the two weeks previous Calvin fought off competition from Mark & Miley who warmed the runner-up position for a fourth week straight.

[03] January 25: Sam Feldt featuring Kate Ryan – "Gold" (1 week)

Easily one of my more forgettable number ones I had this year seeing how it dropped from 1 to 5 in the following week this definitely did not feel like a number one for me in hindsight. It's a nice dance song but I'm surprised I allowed it to take the top spot from Calvin Harris so easily. Kate Ryan may have influence this as she's a personal noughties fave of mine and it was nice to hear some new music from her but Sam Bluer also debuted in this week with my BJSC entry "Body High" and that would have been way more deserving of the crown given how much more it "sold" in the long run here. Sam Feldt appeared twice more in 2019, once on the remix for Drax Project & Hailee Steinfeld's "Woke Up Late" (No. 8, May) and again on "Post Malone" (No. 40 shockingly, August). Kate Ryan has not appeared again this year.

[04] February 1: Brianna — "Lost In Istanbul" (2 weeks)

Another massive number one and another one that felt like it spent way more time on the top than it actually did. Seeing as how this was followed by a string of one-week number ones I definitely feel this was the biggest hit of february for me. I discovered it on some random music video station while in Copenhagen and was absolutely smitten. Brianna has never appeared on my chart prior to this and I'm not sure if she ever will again but this was such a great song to start the spring off with and it spent a whopping 21 weeks on my chart so definitely expect this in the top end of the chart. Brianna fought off competition from some huge hits of mine, such as "Don't Call Me Up" by Mabel, "Bury a Friend" by Billie Eilish and "Girl of the Year" by Allie X along with some of the earlier Melfest entrants.

[05] February 15: Rita Ora — "New Look" (1 week)

While I absolutely love this song and it will definitely feature high up on my EOY chart I don't actually remember having placed this at the top of my chart lmao. It does feel like a huge number two hit to me but I'm not complaining because Rita deserves all the number ones she can get in my chart. After scoring one of my all time favorite songs in 2017 ("Anytime", duh) she's proven to be a worthy chart beast in the latter half of this decade (despite being a decent force in the earlier part as well). Rita Ora had a massive seven songs in the top 50 this year, including some remnants from last year ("Only Want You", "For You" and "Let Me Love You" all strayed over from 2018) and some other huge hits including "R.I.P" with Sofia Reyes and Anitta (No. 8, April), "Carry On" with Kygo (No. 7, May) and "Ritual" with Tiesto and Jonas Blue (No. 4, July). If she releases some new music in 2020 expect her to be a dominant force then as well for sure.

I forgot about Waking Up, what a tune *.*

Glad to see "Waking Up" and "Giant" being your #1s this year!

Also nice to see new peaks for "Bury A Friend", "Think About Us", "Don't Call Me Up", "Pray" and "There You Are" during the time.

Nice start so far!
