It's been such a long long wait for Gaga material I can really get behind but she's truly delivered with this album, Rain on Me is so so good.

Ellie Goulding's new one is great, although it has a very good chance of... dropping out my top 40 this week oops, there's going to be an actual clear out this week because of the new Gaga and Kygo albums.

Top 40 Chart Commentary

It's a big week for Lady Gaga who spends a second week at #1 with 'Rain on Me'. It becomes her first song to spend multiple weeks at #1, with her three previous #1s only managing one week each. Her album impacts this week becoming the year's most impactful album so far in the chart. She has nine entries in the top 40. Alongside 'Rain', the album's first single 'Stupid Love' re-peaks at #8, becoming her 11th top 10 hit. It originally peaked at #20.

She gets three additional top 20 hits with 'Sour Candy', 'Sine From Above' and 'Alice'. 'Candy' gives Blackpink their first hit too, entering at #11. 'Sine' is Elton's 5th hit at #15, one place off his highest peaking track 'Step Into Christmas'. 'Rocket Man' was also a top 20 hit for him here following the movie release last year. 'Enigma', 'Fun Tonight', 'Free Woman' and '911' complete her entries. She now has 27 top 40 hits in total. Her 9 top 40 hits from this album is just one hit short of the 10 that 'Born This Way' provided. 'Artpop' had 5, 'Joanne' had zero and 'A Star Is Born' had just 'Shallow'.

Kygo also released an album this week which gives him four entries in the top 40 including the highest new entry 'Beautiful' at #3. It is his 12th top 10 hit, and the 8th for Sandro (and the 10th top 40 - although he only has ONE that isn't either an Avicii or Kygo collab). His other entries are 'Broken Glass', 'Freedom' and 'Follow', the former giving Kim Petras her first hit. Zak Abel and Joe Janiak are featured on the other two respectively, both previously had hits as features for Avicii. He now has 24 top 40 hits in total.

Riot had a #2 hit last year with 'Overkill' which also represented Danæviia in BJSC, they finally have a follow-up hit (I say finally but I was totally expecting them to be a OHW) with new release 'Jackknife' at #9. It is a very rare (for these times) dubstep song to make this chart.

The final new entry to be mentioned comes at #12 for Lucas & Steve with their best Avicii impression 'Letters'. It is their 15th top 40 hit and features Haris who also sang on their last hit 'Perfect'.

Yes the Avicii influence is very clear in that track, Kygo has got really good at those in recent times.

Like It Is was close to re-entering my chart but not quite, for a song that peaked at #10 here that really is quite poor oops.

This week marks the calm before the storm as Avicii's third studio album 'Tim' has just been released, the album tracks of which are expected to race up to the top end of the chart. Meanwhile the two singles take up the top two positions for a third consecutive week, with 'Tough Love' staying on top for its fifth week, becoming the longest consecutive run at the top this year so far (Calvin Harris' 'Giant' had more non-consecutive weeks, six, split into two runs of two and four weeks). 'SOS' remains at #2.

 

Following last week's top five shakeup, normality is restored as the entire top five are non-movers. Emery/Wallbridge's 'Amber Sun' remains at #3 for its third consecutive week, whilst last week's two new entries 'Wish You Well' and 'One Touch' hold at #4 and #5. Jax's other single 'All Day And Night' gets a second burst of momentum, climbing up to #6. Climbing into the top ten are Ryan Blyth 'Luv 4 Luv', becoming his first top 10 single at #8, as well as David Guetta 'Stay (Don't Go Away)' which is up to #10 - his 16th top 10 hit yet his first in over 3 years, and also the third top 10 hit for Raye. The top 40 this week has 6 brand new entries. Looking forward to hearing it! Hopefully you'll like my next BJSC entry, which you may well be able to guess by looking at the top region of the chart. :P Since I flopped with my pop friendly effort (poor sassy Vassy) I'm going back to niche dance bloc entries.

 

In the end I didn't go for that track I was implying to BJSC - it was Manse's 'Together' which I felt was quite Avicii and thought it'd do well. After a few listens I thought it just didn't hold up greatly as a comparison, especially after 'Goliath' stormed to victory so spectacularly. Ended up relying on personal chart favourite 'First Sight' by WEISS which is a perfect throwback to the big nu disco sound of the mid 2000s.

 

Surprised at how well Lady Gaga is doing here! I liked about a handful of songs from the album only, I'm guessing I'll enjoy further singles as they come along. My favourite after 'Rain on Me' was 'Replay' - although I don't see that becoming a single anytime soon (perhaps only in Vülkyria depending on what her label decides for a 3rd worldwide single). 'Stupid Love' even failed to chart on mine 🤷🏼‍♂️

Top 40 Chart Commentary

It's a quiet week in this chart again following last week's two album bombs thanks to just about no-one releasing any music. There are only five new entries in the entire chart and none of them are brand new releases. The only brand new release to impact is in fact the Meduza remix of 'Discopolis 2.0', which is combined with its original chart run thus it re-enters at #65. Within the top 40 there's 3 new entries and 2 re-entries.

As expected by me, Lady Gaga could only sustain her #1 position for so long and now drops a place and gives way to former #1 'Gravity' from Boris Brejcha. The song has now been announced as the Danævii BJSC entry for this month. It spends a 4th week at #1 and is the 3rd song to do so this year following Gareth Emery's 'Yesterday' and Avicii's 'We Burn (Faster Than Light)'. If it remains #1 next week it will become outright the longest running #1 of the decade so far albeit non-consecutively.

Regard & Raye rebound to #3 following Kygo's 3-10 collapse with 'Beautiful' this week, also joined by Europa (also with Raye) at #5. Craig Connelly rebounds in a big way with album track 'Run Away', climbing to #4 in its 4th week to become his 2nd top 10 hit (following 'Time Machine' having made #7 upon the album impact) and highest peaking hit.

Grum peaked at #24 with 'Afterglow' not so long ago and dropped out the top 40 this week, but it's now back (following me giving the album it's from another listen) and races into the top 10 at #9 - giving Grum a new personal best after 'Tomorrow' reached #13. Both songs have been big sleeper hits this year taking ages to peak. Another re-entry is at #37 from PS1 with 'Fake Friends', which peaked at #24 and returns following renewed interest from its UK chart impact.

The highest brand new entry this week comes from Gamper & Dadoni with their cover of the Abba song 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!', it is their first hit at #30. Marty Guilfoyle also gets his first hit with a cover at #36, that of Ciara's '1, 2 Step' - assisted by John Gibbons who gets his 8th top 40 hit. At #38 I_o & Lights get a 2nd track from their EP to impact, it is with 'Epilogue' which follows 'Annihilation' (at #15 this week, having peaked at #12).

Quite liking 'Together' on a first listen, although it is very third-rate Avicii.

And I'm surprised her album was this good, although expectedly she's fallen a fair bit on 2nd week with the ATs.

This week is all about the release of Avicii's third studio album 'Tim', which in a chart first sees the whole top ten (as well as positions 11-13) taken up by the same artist, with the 12 tracks of the album completing the top 12 and the greatest hits mash-up at #13. Not that anything less was to be expected from the most long-awaited album in THH history. Avicii's very large chart history can be viewed here.

 

Re-entering the chart at #1 this week is 'Heaven', the third single from the album. It originally entered in 2015 when it was leaked as a demo, reaching as high as #3 despite not being in studio quality, but now becomes Avicii's 22nd #1 single in THH, replacing 'Tough Love' which falls to #2. It also gives Chris Martin his second number one, having reached there last in 2012 as part of Coldplay with 'Princess of China'. Meanwhile, 'SOS' falls to #3 and new entries for 'Bad Reputation' and 'Peace of Mind' complete the top five. The rest of the top 12 are also new entries with the exception of 'Heart Upon My Sleeve', which re-enters at #7 having previously peaked at #45 as an album track from 'True' in its instrumental form. The track gives Imagine Dragons their first top 10 hit, and is also their first hit in over 5 years.

I discovered it off Sergej's chart the other week and it grew on me fast. Never Let Me Down is great too, it sounds like it could be a UK hit too if given the push, it's already a hit in Germany so it may be possible considering how much Topic crossed over.

Top 40 Chart Commentary

Boris Brejcha claims a 5th week at #1 with 'Gravity', and in doing so getting the longest running #1 of the year to date outright. It happens as he qualifies in the current BJSC, although he'd have remained at #1 either way. It holds off Lady Gaga again whose 'Rain On Me' spends a 2nd week at #2. The song is now her longest running in the top 3, beating the 3 weeks spent by 'Born This Way' (1-2-2). Again with the disclaimer that the entirety of The Fame (Monster) era pre-dated the chart. Entering the top 5 is Grum as 'Afterglow' continues its rebound, up to #4.

Ella Henderson has the week's highest new entry with 'Take Care of You' instantly entering the top 10 at #10. It is her 5th to enter the region although only her second that wasn't a feature credit, following the #1 'Ghost' in 2014 (assisted by the Oliver Nelson remix). Robbie Seed & That Girl follow their #6 hit 'Stars Collide' (alongside Andrew Rayel) with 'My Remedy' at #13, the 2nd hit for both of them. 'Stars Collide' currently sits at #9. Nora En Pure has her 19th top 40 hit with 'All I Need', new at #16. Following the release of the MK remix, Hosh & 1979 re-enter at #29 with 'Midnight', which originally peaked at #11. Vize leap to #30 with 'Never Let Me Down', getting their first top 40 hit. The Vize/Tom Gregory track has caught my attention today as well, another great dance track! Might add it to my playlist if I hear it enough

I was just very glad she gave us a good song following Worry About Me which I wasn't a fan of.

The Vize track's quickly growing on me, could end up in or near my top 10.
