Señorita finished depressingly high here, love how although it finished 3rd on the hate chart at the end of the year I was the only one to -5 it every week :lol:

 

All Day and Night did incredibly, almost every score given to it was in the top half and that's some achievement! Very good performance for bury a friend here too. :wub:

Ah FYI it did receive a -3! (WhoOdyssey gave it +2 then -3, adding up to -1 combined.) But that and a single -1 were its only negative votes.

 

'Higher Love' had been #1 on reshuffle for 8 weeks right before 'Ride It', so I guess remakes were in vogue for that moment :D Either that or the original 'Ride It' isn't well known enough (I hadn't heard it before Regard). Coincidentally I noticed yesterday that, apart from Jay Sean scraping the top 10 for a week with '2012 (It Ain't The End)', both him and Whitney Houston were last in the top 10 at the same time (with 'Down' and 'Million Dollar Bill'), then had nothing for almost a decade, until 'Ride It' and 'Higher Love' which also charted at the same time. Not that Jay Sean is credited on Regard's version obviously but close enough :P

Ah fair enough, still mightily impressive all the same.

 

I think the Whitney factor was what made Higher Love so well Regarded on here (:basil:) whereas a pitched up vocal from a forgotten noughties single wasn't ever going to get any goodwill support. Admittedly I wasn't familiar with the original but all I can say is... it just isn't a very good song whatever you do with it.

Stuck being split between years, 'Nothing Breaks Like A Heart' impressively still manages to reach the top 10 on top of being #21 on the 2018 EOY; together, its points would be enough for #4 of 2019 or #3 of 2018. It spent many weeks in the top 2, but the 2 times it reached #1 (once in each year) were very lucky; they were by margins of just 1 and 2 points over 'Sweet But Psycho'. Miley's one previous reshuffle #1, 'Wrecking Ball', also reached #1 by only 1 point against 'Counting Stars'. For Mark Ronson, it makes 2 years in a row in the EOY top 20 in some guise, as 'Electricity' was #16 of 2018.

The highest rap song of the year is... a cop-out, being a UK garage song, but it is by a rapper, who's had much more of a typical rap performance with his other top 10 hit involvements 'Fashion Week' and 'Rain' ('Dinner Guest' currently pending). 'Ladbroke Grove' debuted with pretty big points just behind 'Wish You Well', and still managed to maintain itself in strong positive points for a good 2 months, despite already being pretty old by the time it first got there, having taken 5 months to go from entering the official chart to reaching the top 10. Meanwhile I have only now learnt that 'Ladbroke' rhymes with 'book' and not 'broke'.

The longest running reshuffle #2 of 2019, '3 Nights' spent 6 consecutive weeks there (the upcoming 'Piece Of Your Heart' spent 5, non-consecutively), all with strong points but consistently stuck behind 'Higher Love' thanks to entering the same week. That first week, 'Higher Love' was #10 on the official chart by a margin of only 611 sales over #11 ('How Do You Sleep?'), so just a slight shift of fate and '3 Nights' might have been a reshuffle #1. Like 'Ladbroke Grove', '3 Nights' seemingly wasn't hurt by having been around for a long time prior, and I can't disagree because it never got old for me.

The highest reshuffle non-#1 (not to be confused with UK chart 'non-#1s' of the 1-5-13-22-36-52-66 kind), 'Piece Of Your Heart' was blocked by 'bad guy' all 5 times, and one of those was unlucky as you can possibly get - a literal tie, which 'bad guy' won by getting 5 +5s that week compared to 2 for 'Piece Of Your Heart'. It never truly dominated, but got at least 25 points in 9/10 of its weeks (the exception being when 'All Day And Night' sucked up everything else's points), almost looking like its run was cut prematurely.

'Fairytale Of New York' at #29 wasn't the only song to have gotten the same EOY position 2 years in a row: 'Sweet But Psycho' has managed to do it as high as #6. Literally, #6 of 2018 and #6 of 2019! The Adele/Simply Red/etc of the reshuffle chart. It's very close to top 5 here, too - #5 and #4 are only 2 and 7 points ahead. In 2018, 'Sweet But Psycho' demolished previous #1 'Shallow' by a huge lead on debut, though it slipped just behind 'Nothing Breaks Like A Heart' a few weeks later, and behind the Pogues/Wham!/Mariah trio on Christmas (read: post-Christmas) week. It returned to #1 with big points in the first week of 2019, and remained top 3 even after 3 months since its debut. Across both years, it got +549 points in total - enough to be easily #1 of 2018, but only #3 of 2019 (the same applies using Points Per Voters numbers to adjust for varying votership, except with a much smaller lead over 2018's #1).

Also speaking of 'Piece Of Your Heart', that deserves the runner-up Russ/Russ splash/RUSS (SPLASH)/RussMB/Russ Millions/Rush Award for how inconsistent both artists' capitalisation was across platforms :') But they've since added further ground to it, because did you know the cover art has been changed from 'ft.' to 'x'? (along with a couple other modifications weirdly)

'All Day And Night' was stuck bubbling outside the top 10 for weeks, but when it finally scraped in at #10, it truly made the most of it. It scored a massive 108 points in its first week - the only time any song surpassed 100 points in either 2018 or 2019, and the highest by average too. ('Physical' has since gotten as high as 112 points, but with quite a few more voters.) Not only that, but it had a literal 87-point lead over that week's #2, 'bad guy', no small competition as it had been #1 for the previous 7 weeks. It fell back to #11 again, returned for another strong week (albeit a bit less dominant than its first), then was whisked off to ACR, obviously halting its potential in this countdown but leaving its cumulative stats in pristine condition: altogether, it managed an incredible average vote of +3.39, and 96% of its votes were positive. Not only are those both easily the highest of 2019, they could possibly be the highest of all time - my archives are far from complete (it's a long term project lol) but from 2009 to mid-2014, nothing comes out as high. (Numerous songs did do that well or better in individual weeks, but got dragged down across longer runs. The highest I have in total are Loreen's 'Euphoria', a 1-weeker, averaging +3.29, and Lady Gaga's 'Telephone', which lasted 5 weeks, being 89% positive votes.) 'All Day And Night' is the only song in this countdown's top 20 that charted less than 4 weeks, and beats Jax Jones' #22 rank of 'Breathe' last year. It's also my favourite charting song of 2019 (outside of the US bubbling under charts) so I'm quite happy with this.

 

All Day And Night had insane points! If only it had managed at least another 1-2 weeks in the Top 10 I think it would easily have been Top 10 on the year. It's one of the best songs of last year and definitely one of the few chart hits that still sounds incredible today. What was You Don't Know Me in the 2017 reshuffle EOY?

 

The fact Good Things Fall Apart didn't even go Top 100 in the US irks me beyond belief. One of my absolute favourites of last year and yet another fantastic opportunity for Jon Bellion to earn another commercial success but everyone slept on it. The fact it got to #1 on Bubbling Under just adds insult to injury... potentially more annoying to me than how Rex Orange County's 10/10 ended up #102 in Triple J's Hottest 100/200 of 2019.

^ I have no idea :P Nobody ever made a 2017 EOY and I don't have the data for that period collated myself (yet). It got 316 points in total which is pretty strong considering that the early 2017 threads were sometimes not even reaching a second page.

 

I don't think of ILLENIUM as a chart-relevant artist so I find it impressive that it got any traction. I'm not a Rex Orange County fan but I wasn't far off with 'Bags' at #111 so I can relate. At least that #102 wasn't a classic narrowly behind 2 Ruel songs being considered best-of-the-decade content :ph34r:

Not enjoining Buzzjack’s collective taste so far, 3 Nights & Piece of My Heart are songs I especially dislike.

Narrowly squeezing into the top 5 by 2 points is Mabel's biggest hit to date. It was kept off the reshuffle #1 for the first half of its run by 'Sweet But Psycho' and then 'bury a friend' (with several close calls), but was able to get some pretty large leads once both those were out of the way. Her first top 10 hit 'Finders Keepers' only circled on both sides of 0, so it took no effort for 'Don't Call Me Up' to outperform it, and it remains unmatched so far, with 'Mad Love' (#31 in this countdown) reaching #3, and 'Boyfriend' unfortunately only #8. I hope 'Paco Rabanne' paid her well for featuring his/their name on her cover so prominently.

Here's a name you probably wouldn't have expected to be voted top 5 of the year on this site prior: Post Malone. In last year's EOY, he was #89 ('Psycho'), #85 ('Sunflower'), #77 ('Better Now') and #27 (featured on 'Jackie Chan'), and this year, his other entries were #98 ('Wow.'), #60 ('Post Malone'), #40 ('Sunflower', Vol. 2) and #35 ('Goodbyes'). 'Circles' was clearly going somewhere new: upon debut, it was his first reshuffle top 2 placing apart from one week via 'Jackie Chan', and after waiting for 'Higher Love' to get old and 'Ride It' to have its turn, it spent 4 weeks at #1, until 'Don't Start Now' arrived. It was mostly a lower-scoring #1 so I'm kind of surprised it was able to rank this high, but a 10-week run and consistent performance (no less than 20 points each week) served it well.

There's a big jump in points on the way after this - 'Circles' is closer to #13 than to #3.

Circles is one of his worst so of course it does ridiculously well on here...

Never got into Circles at all, I don’t see the huge difference from that and a song like Sunflower and Goodbyes that made this one so popular here

Even with only 7 weeks of charting, 'Don't Start Now' easily makes the top 3. It has the 3rd highest average vote, behind the shorter-lived 'All Day And Night' and 'Wish You Well', and also the 3rd highest % of positive votes, behind the same 2 songs. Naturally, it debuted at #1 and never budged, usually with a large lead although 'everything i wanted' came 11 points behind once. The only somewhat surprising thing is that it didn't get a full set of +5s from any of the 15 people who voted in all of its weeks.

It marks a second year in a row in the EOY top 3 for Dua, following 'One Kiss' being #2 of 2018 - which 'Don't Start Now' managed to surpass the total points of in half as many weeks, though helped by higher voting numbers. Additionally, she was also #16 and #19 last year with 'Electricity' and 'IDGAF', and of course, there's a very strong chance 'New Rules' would've been top 3 of 2017 too, I presume.

Where 'Don't Start Now' truly goes off the charts is in 2020. It lasted a further 18 weeks in the top 10 until ACR finally managed to catch it, and across those 18 weeks, it scored (I'm counting this for the first time now so it's new to me too)... +775 points, never slipping into negative points no matter how old it got. That is more than any song in 2018 or 2019, and that's just its 2020 run. In total, it got +1,259 points, more than double that of 2019's upcoming #1. Could that be the highest score of all time? Perhaps. (Not like it's a fair competition when nothing in the digital sales era could've dreamed of coming near 25 weeks, but nonetheless.) The highest I have from 2009 to mid-2014 is +1,248 from 'Rather Be', which 'Don't Start Now' narrowly surpassed. The same applies via Points Per Voters (increasingly useful when the average number of voters per week ranges from, say, 13 for 'We Found Love' to 31 for 'Don't Start Now' to 35 for 'Rather Be'), where 'Don't Start Now' totalled +43.25, ahead of +36.25 from 'Get Lucky'. Unless, of course, 'Blinding Lights' has something to say about it, given it's also been extremely popular and is going nowhere... I'll leave that as 2020 suspense.

Kygo and Whitney Houston's 'collaboration' resulted in a lot of reshuffle love, including a flood of +5s - 31% of all its votes were +5s, the highest % for any song this year (something neither 'All Day And Night' nor 'Wish You Well' lead in!). Its first 6 weeks were particularly huge, with an average vote of +2.81 across those 6 weeks, and its negatives were pretty concentrated among a couple people... if I delete its lowest 3 voters, its average among those 6 weeks reaches +3.45, surpassing 'All Day And Night' (among all 11 weeks it goes from +2.14 to +2.79). It was a new reshuffle high for both Kygo and Whitney, who'd reached #2 for one week each with all of their previous top 10 hits (within the reshuffle chart's existence, obviously) - 'Million Dollar Bill', blocked by 'Fight For This Love'; 'Firestone', blocked by 'King'; and 'It Ain't Me', blocked by 'Symphony'. And it's so close to #1 that a trivial difference like 'Higher Love' averaging 26.0 votes per week as opposed to 26.9 for the upcoming song is more than enough to place it at #1 by Points Per Voters. I wasn't exaggerating: 'bad guy' wins by 1 point. With a margin like that, you might think the only reason it's #1 is because of the re-entry (fueled by the release of the poorly-received remix with Justin Bieber, which never came close to the original on Spotify but did push it back to SCR), but it actually scored +5, -4 and -2 points in those 3 weeks respectively, adding up to a combined -1 point - so without the re-entry, it would've instead been 2 points ahead of 'Higher Love'. The re-entry did, however, drag down its average vote, which without it would be +1.88 (ranking #6).

 

'bad guy' followed in the footsteps of 'bury a friend' and debuted at #1, and remained there for long enough to block 'Here With Me', 'Piece Of Your Heart', 'Vossi Bop' (though that one also got blocked by 'Señorita') and... 'You Need To Calm Down'. As a #1, it wasn't really as high-scoring as 'All Day And Night', 'Wish You Well', 'Higher Love' or 'Don't Start Now', but of course it charted longer than all of them (even without the re-entry), and to its credit, was still able to be #1 as late as its 12th week, with 'All Day And Night' being the only song that ever ranked above it during those 12 weeks.

Congrats to 'bad guy', and also congrats to me for completing this to the fullest (as opposed to facelessly dumping 60 songs at once), regardless of what month the calendar says it currently is :magic: Thanks to all who've followed along and to all the regular voters, and to my predecessor Dexton for handing me the host job in 2018. I once counted a reshuffle host 'leaderboard' and I believe I've since become the 2nd longest running host, of course well behind Leonardo who took care of it for 5 years straight. I'll count a 2018-2019 combined list later and post that (assuming it's somewhat interesting).

Wow at bad guy only winning by one point! I'm glad it did though, Higher Love is nice but bad guy will no doubt be the song that people (or at least myself) still actively like and listen to in the years to come! Thanks for hosting Rush :D

I think that makes it 83 or 84 weeks for you now doesn't it? And I'm only 3 weeks behind wardy so if you ever need a stand in I'm here to boost my position :kink: As much as I enjoyed hosting it for as long as I did I'm so happy we palmed the job off to someone as... statistically inclined... as you! No doubt if it were me hosting this EOY there would be significantly less stats... in fact we'd probably end up with a straight list of songs with only their point totals all posted at once like a year later. Don't look at my 2018 EOY if you have any respect for me left

Oh I didn't expect it to be so close between #1 and #2, I thought bad guy would be further ahead! Well done to both - and that total score for Don't Start Now, impressive for it to stay so popular for so long! Thanks Rush for the brilliant stats and commentary.
