These two were only 12 and 13 years old when they recorded the song. It spent eight weeks at no.1 in the US. Over here,Kriss Kross had just two more top 40 hits. One of them,Chris Kelly, sadly died from a drugs overdose in 2013.

From the same year,Kylie Minogue's second hit single. Stock,Aitken and Waterman had already recorded the song with Mandy Smith who is mostly remembered for being in a relationship with Bill Wyman at the age of 16. Her version was not released and the song was passed on to Kylie.

No losses at all in the bottom five, that's a great start!

Sign Your Name is gone? That's one of the best songs ever in the history of music, really thought it was gonna win this thing :/

but guess people in here are too young :/

I am very familiar with it despite my age, it's just a little bit dull

I’m not too young, I just don’t like it.

One of the best songs in the history of music? I mean I know music is a subjective thing but that's a bit of a stretch. It's an alright song, it's fine to listen to when it comes on the radio but I've never thought of it as a classic or anything, and certainly nowhere near a contender to win this.

From 1964,this was the follow up to the Kinks' first no.1 single 'You Really Got Me'. Ray and Dave Davies are currently writing new songs and hope to release a new album by the end of this year. If it comes to fruition,it will be the first Kinks album since 1993.

Another song in this countdown to become a hit after being championed by John Peel. It's probably the most unusual song ever to reach the top 2 of the singles chart. For a start,it's over eight minutes long. Some of the lyrics are quite haunting now in the way they predict 9/11. The single's chart run of 18-2-3-15-24-54 is quite unusual for that time as well. Many people, including myself, found it annoying so it didn't quite have the appeal to a wide audience to hang around the chart. It was well after the 80s had finished that I came to appreciate how great this song really is.

Elvis Costello's highest charting single and one of only three top 10 hits. He wrote it after seeing British soldiers on the streets during a trip to Belfast. It wins a tie-break over 'O Superman' by 8 votes to 5.

Laurie & Costello eliminated? Not cancelled :P
The Kinks should have finished higher than that but otherwise good results so far.

O Superman is one of the most unique chart hits I've ever heard, I had never heard it prior to coming across it in the '1001 songs to hear before you die' book but it was such a standout moment, I really wish I'd be alive to see the reaction to that.

Shame it's so low, but it did well to get this far given I wasn't really aware many knew it on here!

O Superman is definitely an unlikely top 2 single. I'm torn on it, I can appreciate it retrospectively for its influence on experimental electronic music but I do find it a chore to sit through all 8 minutes - I just tried again and got to about 5 minutes before getting bored of it.

The only top 5 single for the American group who have always been more at home in the UK. The distinctive gunshot sounds were added after the production team thought that there was something missing from the finished recording. Five of the six people who voted for this song gave it a score of 20 points or more. Sparks are showing no signs of slowing down. Just three years after their last album, they have a new one coming out in May.
