After the forthcoming break, Whitney and Keegan need a lot less screen time and a lot less misery. Jean too.

Affair storylines should be BANNED from soap. They're my pet peeve and I always find them so ridiculously dull :drama:

An affair storyline without any contact (so an "implied" affair, rather than an affair that plays out on screen) will be interesting. I wish it wasn't Whitney though.

The best thing about the Kat/Derek affair was that we didn’t get to see any of it and he died like 3 episodes later.

The Derek/Kat affair was so unnecessary. They already gave Kat an affair story the previous year where they explored the strain the baby swap storyline had on her relationship with Alfie and Alfie had said if she has another affair, don't tell him about it. The 'whodunnit' tag was tacky and people either didn't care who it was or knew it was clearly Derek and also didn't care. The fight in the Vic was a particular lowlight. There reveal was good, I'll give them that, and it was at a time where big episodes could occur around Christmas and not just on the day itself. It wasn't worth the build up though and killing Derek off a few episodes later just meant there wasn't really anywhere else to go with the story and Kat was left as a redundant character until she ultimately ended up back with Alfie. It wasn't until 2015 when Kat confessed to June Whitfield that she went with Derek because he reminded her of Harry, which was probably the only possible interesting strand of the story which the writers at the time neglected to explore.

Derek was just everywhere in that year (I’ll always be unhappy with how much time he took up in Pat’s last episode) and it was just exhaustive. It was obviously him sleeping with Kat and that fight in the Vic was like living on another planet.

A dark time.

Not gonna lie tho, I kinda liked Derek :lol: We've had many gangster type character over the years but he is the son of an actual real life gangster so he gave the roll some legitimacy.

Dereks character arc was similar to Hayley Slaters in that during their time on the show it felt like they were in every scene of every episode and every storyline somehow went back to them being at the centre.

 

 

Hayley Slater is even more bemusing than Derek, I feel. At least Derek was a character before that year but Hayley was created out of nowhere and stole all the focus from the superior returning Slaters we had at the time and her child is still in the show after more than a year since her parents left. Derek’s death at least had a build up whereas Hayley dominated for a year and completely disappeared and they haven’t even addressed it since.

With Hayley I always low key thought there could’ve been some sort of on set incident or something what happened to make Katie Jarvis just not come back at all. It was as if she was supposed to be but it just never happened. Of course nothings ever been reported regarding this and I would genuinely love to see her come back to be honest just as long as she was used correctly and not totally overused.

 

In other news Patsy Palmer is in the Sun today yet again slagging off the show. She always pipes up saying something shady about it yet they still get her back for guest stints every few years it’s like why! She’s one character I’d love to be killed off to be honest although I would rather her actually die on screen just so she doesn’t do a Kathy Beale / Dirty Den and return from the dead.
