Kenny Rogers is one of those artist where everyone knows and loves at least one of his songs. Sadly the BBC are reporting the breaking news of his death at 81 from natural causes, so I thought I'd countdown his UK hits, and apparently he only had 13 that made the UK charts in the first place, so here's #13.

 

What About Me - with Kim Carnes and James Ingram - number 92 in 1984

His 7th biggest hit in the UK is probably one of his most loved ones here nowadays, so it's strange it isn't higher.

At #4 is probably the first hit anyone would name if they were asked to name a Kenny Rogers hit.

Islands In The Stream - with Dolly Parton - number 7 in 1984

Lady is a goodie, Lionel Richie song, and Islands In The Stream is a goodie, Bee Gees written when they had to give songs away to get hits following the disco backlash. Something's Burning is also good, but his first hit is his best though and should be up next...

At #3 is the one were his solo career began

 

Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town - with First Edition - number 2 in six different weeks in 1969 and 1970

His 2 biggest hits were both charttoppers, so I've tie-broken by number of weeks on chart, so that makes #2

 

Coward Of The County - number 1 in 1980 with 12 weeks on chart

And finally his biggest UK hit.

 

Lucille - number 1 in 1977 with 14 weeks on chart.

I was thinking how it was interesting that Ronan covered two of his songs. Perhaps he was a fan, or perhaps his manager was. I guess the fact that Kenny's songs were covered years later illustrates how Kenny's songs sort of transcended generations a bit. Not a weekend went by without someone at my local putting at least one Kenny Rogers song on the jukebox, and that was people of all ages from the oldest bar flies to the new teen drinkers having a game of pool and a pint before going on to a club, The Gambler in particular was often played, so I feel like there's a supreme irony that we learn of the loss of Kenny on the first day that the pubs cannot open, otherwise my local would definitely had a lot of Kenny Rogers sing-alongs tonight, as I suspect many others around the country would have done too.

Such a legend in music, not just country music.

 

A brilliant story teller, "Coward Of The County" and "Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town" being some of them.

 

I was only introduced to Kenny Rogers because my dad was a big fan and played his music a lot in the car.

So many great songs, legend indeed.

R.I.P. to a singer that I have always liked. He made the move from country star to pop star with numerous hits on the UK and US charts. My favourite song by Kenny is 'The Gambler'.

This year is just getting worse :( From the few songs I have heard of Kenny Rodgers (must listen to more of these songs posted on this thread today) he had a great voice and a great ability to convey emotion in this songs. RIP.
