One of a Kind

with Ronan Keating

Released: 2020

UK Charts Peak: N/A

This has suffered just a tad due to recency, but I'm sure it'll continue to climb over time given with each listen it grows on me more and more, and Emeli's vocals are more impressive each time, too. One of a Kind is a single taken from Ronan Keating's upcoming album Twenty Twenty, due to be released in July. It was a bit of an unexpected collaboration - it just suddenly popped up on New Music Friday the week it was released and took me by surprise. Despite not being a fan of Ronan either, he's surprisingly good on this song (even if the whole thing does appeal to his typical mum fanbase), and I feel he and Emeli sound great together. Obviously this has done absolutely nothing in terms of commercial success, but it's great to see that other artists are still itching to collaborate with Emeli and creating gems like this. For me, this definitely adds to Emeli's discography in the best possible way, unlike some of the features lower down here.

Daddy

feat. Naughty Boy

Released: 27 November 2011

UK Charts Peak: 21

Fast forward three months after the release of her debut single Heaven, and Emeli's releasing Daddy, another collaboration with Naughty Boy. While the title of this song will forever haunt me given its sexual connotations (lol), in itself it's actually a brilliant song, but hasn't quite aged as well as some of her other singles. While it's a pleasant listen every time I go through Emeli's discography, it reminds me only really of where she started out, and that this is the forgotten one wedged between Heaven and Next to Me, two of her most memorable singles with the general public. In terms of chart success, the song managed to peak at #21 in the UK (while also outdoing that in Scotland, reaching #20). I think the best memory of this song, for me, will always be her live performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Opening the show with this was a wise decision, and set the tone for the show perfectly.

My Kind of Love

Released: 8 June 2012

UK Charts Peak: 17

Zooming into 2012 now - a year where it felt like the whole world (besides me) was starting to get sick of hearing and seeing Emeli almost everywhere; and things weren't going to let up because this was the year she also made an appearance at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and continued to release singles from Our Version of Events, and a repackaged edition of the album. On My Kind of Love itself though, the song was released in the summer, and much like Daddy it's one that just... has not aged well. I still like it when I hear it, but even when I've seen Emeli live, it's one song that I feel goes on longer than it needs to and isn't as incredible an experience as hearing some other songs is. The song managed to bag Emeli a top 20 hit, following on from Next to Me and preceding Clown, what would be the fifth single from her debut album - so not a bad showing. I think I actually prefer the alternate version of this she released, alongside its superior music video too.

Omg I forgot about My Kind Of Love :cheeseblock:

Gorgeous? Gorgeous!

I didn't realise that Emeli had so many singles but I'm delighted that Calum has made some up to avoid "My Kind Of Love" having to be top 15

Clown

Released: 3 February 2013

UK Charts Peak: 04

Eight months on from the release of My Kind of Love (and with Beneath Your Beautiful, a collaboration with Labrinth, sandwiched in between too), and Emeli's releasing the fifth single from Our Version of Events on 3 February 2013. Clown is a beautiful ballad, one that she always describes so openly about being the butt of somebody's joke, letting people laugh at your expense, and just in that moment allowing yourself to be the 'clown', no matter how damning it may be. When this was announced as a single it felt like such an 'about time!!1!' moment, but I'm glad it had its moment in the spotlight, despite it not being one of my absolute favourites from Emeli. She has better singles, but I can appreciate the beauty of this. When released, it managed to reach a peak of #4 in the UK charts, giving Emeli another top 10 hit under her belt, and in a strong position bookending an era. The music video for this is one that I'll always adore too - it had a vision set out completely by Emeli herself, and it all comes out at the other end beautifully.

What I Did For Love

David Guetta feat. Emeli Sandé

Released: 20 February 2015

UK Charts Peak: 06

A year before Emeli's second album Long Live the Angels landed, we had a dance collaboration with DJ David Guetta on the track What I Did For Love. This is another collaboration that certainly came as a bit of a surprise, but it works so well. It managed to grab Emeli another top 10 hit, peaking at #6 in the UK. I think my biggest (and funniest) memory of this song is when it was used at the end of EastEnders' anniversary special episode, bringing the 'who killed Lucy Beale?' storyline to its dramatic conclusion. It was a very fitting inclusion, given the storyline basically involved someone doing something extreme out of love, but still very random at the same time. Emeli's vocals sound brilliant on this song, and the song itself, while far from being near David Guetta's best, is great and definitely came at a time where we needed to hear something different from Emeli, reaching into a new genre.

Breathing Underwater

Released: 28 October 2016

UK Charts Peak: 78

Time for a criminally underrated single now. Breathing Underwater was released in October 2016 as the second single from Emeli's second album Long Live the Angels. Now, to me it's fairly obvious why it only managed a peak of #78 in the UK, because it's such a beautiful song that deserved so much more loving than it was given. Following on from Hurts was going to be a massive feat for any song from the album - it was a new sound for Emeli compared to a lot of the singles we had from Our Version of Events, and to the general public Breathing Underwater probably sounded like a regression in terms of sound. However, it's such a beautiful song. Its lyrics are both tragic and empowering, and with the added flair of a gospel choir in the song's last minute or so, as well as Emeli's lush vocals throughout both the verses and the chorus - it has all the makings of a perfect single.

Omg I remember 'What I Did For Love' dramatically being used in Eastenders! I started tuning out shortly after the who killed Lucy? storyline wrapped up so was still here for that *_* not a Guetta fave for me really oops, I prefer her Naughty Boy work in terms of dance-leaning stuff ~

Sparrow

Released: 15 March 2019

UK Charts Peak: 53

It's been just over a year since the release of Sparrow, the first single from Emeli's third album REAL LIFE. Released in March 2019, at a time when the album was scheduled to be released much earlier than it eventually was, the song immediately drew me in with its inspirational lyrics and Emeli's want to encourage people to make the most of life, and remind them that they are beautiful, loving and amazing. Unfortunately the single didn't take off at all (I've included a UK peak of #53 above, however that's for UK Downloads so I'm unsure if that's the same as the official UK chart lol), much like all of the singles from this most recent era, which is a shame because all of the singles (as well as album tracks) are among her absolute strongest music to date. The only reason this single has failed to reach the top 10 in the countdown is because, while truly magnificent, it can sometimes be forgotten amidst everything else.
