I feel like if they were a bog-standard pop group with just music to go off, 7 wouldn't quite be needed. I suppose it was unique and allowed for variety across albums - not every song was a Jo / Bradley / Rachel lead - but it's the TV series that really proved why the numbers were there. A variety of storylines, and some of them quite clearly had better acting chops than the others - Hannah hit the ground running for example while she was never the strongest vocalist. Somehow 7 never feels crowded when I feel like a brand new 7-piece pop group absolutely would be too many...!
A group of 7 likeable good looking people in their 20s with a token black person so they appeal to most demographics. That was their biggest selling point to me.
Gonna be honest, it was Rachel for me. Such a sex symbol for teens at the time. Their music wasn't sad and depressing either so that helped. On the surface 7 fresh young faces with energy and catchy music is what sold it i think

Apparently Tina is mixed race too! I always just thought she was tanned :o

Somehow 7 members really worked, and came across as being appealing - they were like a gang of friends you'd like to be a part of. To me it didn't feel like any of them were unnecessary, even though vocally it was quite clear that Jo did the heavy lifting.

A lot of fans were introduced to them via Miami 7, and 9 episodes had aired before the release of Bring It All Back. So many viewers were introduced to them as personalities (even if these personalities were likely exaggerated), which made this group of 7 feel very established before the single came out. It never felt like... "why are there so many members?", it just seemed to make sense.
