April 13, 20205 yr Happy is a pretty fair #1. It did seem to take over the world. I was expecting Mr Brightside & Love The Way You Lie to appear somewhere in the top 40.
April 13, 20205 yr I'm surprised Despacito or Gangnam Style wasn't in this chart. Edited April 13, 20205 yr by IdentFan101
April 13, 20205 yr Author I'm surprised Despacito or Gangnam Style wasn't in this chart. Despacito is from 2018 which is a little too recent for an impact on plays. I'd say it'll be in the next one, along with Shotgun and Someone You Loved. Gangnam Style was a flash in the pan really and didn't get much exposure post-2012/13.
April 13, 20205 yr Seems I was right in my guess on p1 (but wrong in just about all my predictions for this chart since!)
April 13, 20205 yr I'm gonna take a guess that Happy will be #1 but I don't pay close attention to the airplay chart so I could be well off. :magic: this really was EVERYWHERE but it is a great song. WD Pharrell
April 13, 20205 yr The full Top 40 is up on the first page, thanks for commenting along :) Thanks for hosting Lewis, great chart!

I thought this chart was the most played chart anywhere that played licensed music (e.g. weddings, barbecues, parties etc.) cause I normally hear Gangnam Style at parties. April 13, 20205 yr I thought this chart was the most played chart anywhere that played licensed music (e.g. weddings, barbecues, parties etc.) cause I normally hear Gangnam Style at parties. I believe you're right but clearly radio airplay has made up the majority of the plays going towards this chart, and all the parties Gangnam Style has been played at just aren't enough to push it ahead of the big radio hits.
April 13, 20205 yr Chasing Cars would be my favourite out of those 40. It's the only one I have in my music collection.
April 13, 20205 yr Author Oop Despacito was from 2017 sorry! I mean Shape of You scraped in and that was the biggest song of that year so can’t really see anything else creepin in just yet
April 13, 20205 yr Caught the last hour of this. Conclusion I came to is that they all had cross-generational appeal, many of them were very retro (mainly borrowing from the 60s and 70s) and they probably all made the Radio 2 playlist. Am I right on the last count? No surprises at the lack of massive hip-hop streaming hits like One Dance that aren't Heart-friendly and don't fit the criteria already mentioned. Fully expecting to see Blinding Lights and loads of other songs that sound like the 1980s in the 2030 equivalent of this. People of a certain age on social media seem to LOVE Blinding Lights cos Take On Me. Edited April 13, 20205 yr by HiyaLuv
April 13, 20205 yr Going back to my Chasing Cars prediction earlier: since it was only number 16 on this list, that means that its airplay from 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 alone was enough to make it more popular than any hit from the 2010s when the list of the top songs of the century was made last year!
April 13, 20205 yr Author Yeah most, if not all, songs were playlisted by R2. I could check as maybe one or two didn’t but it’s not necessary. Certainly the songs that have had cross-radio appeal on the big networks but also the smaller local stations are what we’ve got here, the songs you couldn’t escape on the music channels too. A song like One Dance is going to have been let down by not having a music video I guess
April 13, 20205 yr It still baffles me that She Said outperformed every single Ed Sheeran song - even The A Team, which only came out 16 months later. I'm also surprised Hey Soul Sister didn't outpace Drive By.

People of a certain age on social media seem to LOVE Blinding Lights cos Take On Me. Yeh you make a good point but surely in 2030 the people loving the 80s stuff and stuff that has a cross generational appeal will be well into their 60s? Baffling that Ed Sheeran didn't make it in with his 2014 stuff like 'Sing' or more likely 'Thnking Out Loud'.
