Posted April 19, 20205 yr Thanks to all those who took part, hope you enjoyed racking your brains to identify those albums :) A reminder of the 29 people who took part: DalekTurret32 dandy* chrissmith276 Infludexton* Bjork Scene coi n4yr dan.G* Cremey Jade LewisGT Jordan Lee vibe Dobbo StoneDragon pcr Mack The Hit Parade Riser Jahq Gezza PeteFromLeeds jimwatts MrAndrewMan SamJudd Toilet Rollo Dan17F1 Rush Before we begin, here's some stats about the results... Of the 40 albums and 29 participants: - There was only 1 album which was correctly guessed by every participant - There were 11 albums which were correctly guessed by 25 or more people - There were just 4 albums which were only correctly guessed by less than half - the red herring was correctly guessed by 20 people A reminder of how the scoring works: it's 1 point for correct artist, 1 point for correct album title, 5 points for correct answer to the bonus question. So a total of 85 points were available. I'll announce the answers throughout the afternoon, 5 albums at a time, and then the scores and winner at the end. So without further ado, here are the first five albums. 1. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool (2016) Correct guesses: 22 out of 29 I kicked things off with what I thought was a relatively difficult one, and yet it was correctly guessed by more than 75% of you. This went straight in at number one in May 2016 and then gradually fell down the charts before returning to number one six weeks later when it was released physically. Fact: the tracklisting of the album is in alphabetical order. 2. Lewis Capaldi - Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent (2019) Correct guesses: 27 out of 29 The second most recent release to appear in the quiz, LewCap's debut album is of course the UK's best selling album of 2019, so this was always going to be an easy one. Fact: While the album has performed well in most territories, the French are evidently divinely uninspired by Lewis (possibly to a hellish extent), as the album has never climbed higher than number 55 there. 3. Corinne Bailey Rae - Corinne Bailey Rae (2006) Correct guesses: 23 out of 29 Leeds lass Corinne Bailey Rae won the BBC's 'Sound of' poll back in 2006 and released her critically acclaimed debut album in February of that year, which sold 4 million copies worldwide. Her popularity declined quickly though and she seems all but forgotten about these days. Fact: Corinne became only the fourth British female act in history to have her debut album go straight to number one. 4. Oasis - Be Here Now (1997) Correct guesses: 20 out of 29 Oasis' third album famously became the fastest-selling album in British chart history, shifting a staggering 424,000 copies in its first day on release. It has since gone on to divide critics and reportedly Noel Gallagher himself regards it as his least favourite Oasis album but personally I think it's a fantastic album and I would possibly rate it in my all time top ten. Fact: The props used for the album cover were selected by Noel at random from a BBC props store and it took a crew two days to get the Rolls Royce into the pool. 5. Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell (1993) Correct guesses: 16 out of 29 This rock classic was a belated sequel to Meat Loaf's debut album Bat Out Of Hell which was released 16 years prior, and despite other studio albums being released in between. Its lead single was the 12-minute opus and worldwide smash I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) which reached number one in 28 countries, although exactly what it is he wouldn't do for love remains shrouded in confusion to this day. Btw I awarded a full mark for just 'Bat Out Of Hell 2' even if you didn't put the full title. Fact: The album spent 11 non-consecutive weeks at number one. Edited April 19, 20205 yr by M4NGO
April 19, 20205 yr Hype :cheer: I got all of those first 5 except Meat Loaf oops - not really familiar with that cover
April 19, 20205 yr I'm not very familiar with the Meat Loaf cover, but I am a member of the Bat Conservation Trust. And I recognised the style.
April 19, 20205 yr Corinne tripped me up because when I saw it, I thought of her, but I typed it into Spotify to confirm and was shown this: but luckily I checked Wikipedia which had the main one on top.
April 19, 20205 yr I got all those! A nice start so far yay. Corrine tripped me up too, Spotify obviously can’t be trusted where Google can
April 19, 20205 yr I've seen a lot of copies of that Corrine BR album in charity shops over the years, so I could easily recognise it. Maybe I should have bought one. EDIT: maybe I should learnt how to spell her name too. Edited April 19, 20205 yr by The Hit Parade
April 19, 20205 yr Im baffled I didn’t get Meatloaf. Not surprised I didn’t get Oasis though not my kinda music at all
April 19, 20205 yr Author Corinne must have had multiple album covers, or maybe one was a re-release or something? I definitely remember the original album cover though.
April 19, 20205 yr Author 6. Bruno Mars - Doo-Wops And Hooligans (2010) Correct guesses: 28 out of 29 One of the easiest ones in the quiz, it seems hard to believe that Bruno's debut album is ten years old already, and it remains the biggest selling of the three albums he has released thus far, having sold close to 2 million copies in the UK. Fact: Doo-Wops And Hooligans became the third best selling album of 2011 in the UK, trailing only Adele and Michael Bublé. 7. Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (1985) Correct guesses: 23 out of 29 Dire Straits' fifth studio album became the first album to sell a million copies on CD and to outsell its LP version. Fact: Despite initially negative reviews, Brothers In Arms has gone on to become the 8th best-selling album in UK chart history. 8. Fleetwood Mac - Tango In The Night (1987) Correct guesses: 20 out of 29 The 14th studio album by Fleetwood Mac, it is the last album to feature the band's classic line-up. It spent eight months in the UK top ten and is the seventh biggest selling album of the 1980s in the UK. Fact: The sublime cover art for the album was a painting which was hanging in guitarist/vocalist Lindsey Buckingham's home. 9. Peter Andre - Natural (1996) Correct guesses: 16 out of 29 Yes those impressive biceps belong to Mr Andre! One of the more difficult ones in the quiz, I can't decide if you should be proud or embarrassed if you got this one right :P This feels like a largely forgotten album, despite being home to 5 UK Top 20 hits (including the then-ubiquitous Mysterious Girl). Fact: Upon its release Natural became the fastest selling album of the year, selling 200,000 copies in its first week, yet it barely just scraped into the Top 40 in the year end chart. 10. Paolo Nutini - Sunny Side Up (2009) Correct guesses: 25 out of 29 The second studio album by Scottish crooner Paolo Nutini, the album appeared in the end of year top 10 for both 2009 and 2010. Fact 1: The album returned to number one in the first week of 2010, making it the first number one album of the new decade. Fact 2: Sunny side up is the only correct way to eat a fried egg. Edited April 19, 20205 yr by M4NGO
April 19, 20205 yr Got all of those except Pete Andre  I was convinced that it was a boyband cover like Blue or something.
April 19, 20205 yr I got the Fleetwood Mac one after I’d sent my answers. Knew it wasn’t the latest Nick Drake one but out that because I thought it looked a bit like it :’)
April 19, 20205 yr Author 11. McFly - Room On The 3rd Floor (2004) Correct guesses: 14 out of 29 My enduring-and-at-times-bordering-on-obsessive love for McFly has long been a subject of ridicule from most of my mates but if anything that just makes me love them even more *.* Tom and Danny from the band spent two months staying in Room 363 of the Intercontinental Hotel In London where many of the songs were written - which gave rise to the name of the album. Fact: With the release of this album, McFly made history by becoming the youngest ever band to score a number one album, a record previously held by The Beatles. 12. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) Correct guesses: 19 out of 29 So 27 people correctly identified this as Eminem, and of those, 8 people went for 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2' - that had a very similar cover but you don't get a point for that I'm afraid because the image is very subtly different! Widely regarded as Eminem's best work and often named in lists of the greatest albums of all time, the release of Marshall Mathers' highly controversial second album turned him into a global superstar. It became the fastest-selling rap album in history. Fact: Eminem had previously considered naming the album Amsterdam after a drug-fuelled trip to the Dutch city, before deciding on The Marshall Mathers LP. For reference, this is the cover for The Marshall Mathers LP 2. 13. Def Leppard - Hysteria (1987) Correct guesses: 16 out of 29 Arguably the most striking album cover in the quiz, I'm actually surprised more people didn't get it because I thought it was a really well known one. This is easily one of my favourite album covers of all time (along with their 1992 follow up Adrenalize - seriously, Google it!) A dispute over royalties meant that this album, as well as other Def Leppard classics, weren't available on streaming services until 2018. Fact: The production costs for Hysteria allegedly mounted up to $5m, which at the time made it one of the most expensive albums ever made. 14. Rihanna - Good Girl Gone Bad (2007) Correct guesses: 28 out of 29 No surprise that almost everyone got this one! It was third time lucky for Rihanna, finally hitting the UK top spot with album number three, helped no doubt by smash hit Umbrella. Fact: Rihanna managed to fend off the likes of Biffy Clyro and Paul McCartney to debut at number one in a week where the Top Ten contained no less than seven new entries. 15. Muse - Absolution (2003) Correct guesses: 21 out of 29 Another case of third time lucky, with Muse's lyrically apocalyptic-themed third album providing them with their first number one, paving the way for every subsequent studio album to also reach the top spot. Fact: The album artwork differs by format - the special edition features a different man in a different angle, whereas the vinyl features a little girl.
April 19, 20205 yr Got all of those except McFly - I couldn't get O-Zone out of my head as the cropped square was reminding me of the 'Dragoste Din Tei' video
April 19, 20205 yr Author Got all of those except McFly - I couldn't get O-Zone out of my head as the cropped square was reminding me of the 'Dragoste Din Tei' video  To be fair, if you didn't know it then O-Zone was a decent enough guess - and it was released the same year as McFly too! Edited April 19, 20205 yr by M4NGO
April 19, 20205 yr I was one of the eight caught out by the similarities between the two Marshall Mathers LPs, sneaky! At least I wasn't the only one :D Absolution
April 19, 20205 yr Uh oh. I really used some obvious ones now looking back. At least I took part
April 19, 20205 yr Author 16. Pet Shop Boys - Very (1993) Correct guesses: 24 out of 29 I actually thought most people would struggle with this one so I'm really impressed with how many of you got it right. The original release of the album was packaged in an orange jewel case with raised bumps (which led to it being known as the 'Lego' case). Criminally, Very has been the PSB's only number one album to date, although seven others have made the Top 3. Fact: Every Pet Shop Boys album title, including Very, is made up of just one word, a tradition which they have yet to break. 17. Blur - Parklife (1994) Correct guesses: 25 out of 29 One of the defining albums of the Britpop era, Blur's acclaimed third album became their first chart-topper, stayed on the chart for 90 weeks and has been certified four times platinum. The album was originally planned to be called London. Fact: The album cover for Parklife was among the ten chosen by the Royal Mail for a set of "Classic Album Cover" postage stamps issued in January 2010. 18. Blondie - Parallel Lines (1978) Correct guesses: 22 out of 29 The first of Blondie's two UK number one albums, Parallel Lines also proved to be their commercial breakthrough in the US. I'm surprised so many people got this one right given what era it's from. Fact: The album provided Blondie with the first of their six number one singles, which spanned 20 years - beginning with Heart Of Glass and ending with Maria in 1999. 19. Dr Dre - Compton (2015) Correct guesses: 21 out of 29 Compton was the long-awaited third album from hip-hop legend Dr Dre, released after a gap of 17 years from his previous album 2001 (confusingly released in 1999). Fact: With Compton going to number one, Dr Dre became the first artist in history to top the UK Albums Chart with a non-physical release (the phsyical was not released until two weeks later). 20. Justin Bieber - Changes (2020) Correct guesses: 22 out of 29 The most recent album in the quiz, the Biebster's latest release came very close to not becoming a number one album, selling just 144 more sales units than Lewis Capaldi to debut at the top. Fact: Changes is not a very good album :kink:
