Originally released in 2002, Maroon 5’s debut album was a sleeper hit peaking when they band blew up in 2004. It eventually hit the top spot in the UK in August 2004 and spawned 5 top 40 singles including This Love and She Will Be Loved which were both top 5 hits. This is easily their most personal work to date, as is often the case with a band’s debut album, and is based around an ex girlfriend of lead singer Adam Levine who he only ever refers to as Jane. A lyrically brilliant album, it’s safe to say that Maroon 5 just don’t make songs like this anymore as they continue to water down their music to chase trends but I hold out hope they will return to writing music this good again one day, as this album proves they have it in them.

I was 15 when I bought this off the back of This Love which I was obsessed with. I quickly became obsessed with She Will Be Loved way before it was announced as the next single and so I was so excited when it was! This was one of the first albums I would just listen to over and over. Other faves include The Sun, Must Get Out, Harder To Breathe and Sunday Morning.

I prefer their second album, especially as a lot of those songs have now also suffered from overplay but there’s still some actual good songs there! I really like Harder to Breathe and Must Get Out is definitely another highlight!

I think I prefer the second album too! After a while I might start a review thread for that one!

Harder to breathe, this love and she will loved remain their best songs for me.

I was coming in here to say exactly this!! What a trio of stellar singles. I've only recently appreciated the true brilliance of This Love. Back in the day I was more female pop oriented to truly appreciate Maroon 5 (besides She Will Be Loved).

Given they’ve just dropped another bland borefest of a single, I'm revisiting this thread to remember that they were once very capable of amazing things.

Listened to this again today for the first time in over ten years, because of this thread. Listening to it reminded how it was pretty much my soundtrack to the second half of 2004, I was obsessed.

It’s easily their best album for me, though their second one is still very good.

All the songs are good, nit just the singles. Shiver, Not Coming Home, Tangled and Through With You are all highlights.
