Love Don't Live Here Anymore Featured in her second studio album 'Like A Virgin', Madonna recorded a cover of the Rose Royce classic 'Love Don't Live Here Anymore'. Madonna's version came about due to the involvement of Michael Ostin, the head of the A&R department of Warner Bros. Records. A remix was later included in her 1995 ballad compilation album 'Something to Remember'. During the creation of the song, Madonna started crying as she became overcome with emotion in its closing moments and this was left in the recording. What are your thoughts on this ballad from 1984?
April 29, 20206 yr I love this track . I fell in love with t more after the rebel heart tour performance. I love the emotion in the vocal and this was the first ballad she ever attempted. I think I prefer the original over the remix .
April 29, 20206 yr Author I really enjoyed the Rebel Heart Tour performance! It was actually a highlight looking back and she sounded amazing. I too grew to appreciate it a lot more after that - it helps that 'HeartBreakCity' leads so well into it and is packed with emotion too. Y1q-3-axMpY
May 1, 20206 yr The Rebel Heart performance was fantastic! Totally unexpected as it's a song I wouldn't expect her to acknowledge again nor attempt to sing, but she sounded great and it fitted with 'HeartBreakCity' so well. I'm still not over it being removed from the DVD. :drama: It's a highlight on Like a Virgin, adding some much needed depth to the album.
May 7, 20206 yr Author PfEP189tUo4 02. Jimmy Jimmy We go to Madonna's 3rd album now. Jimmy Jimmy is one of two tributes in True Blue, to movie star James Dean. It has a very 60s vibe to it as she sings fantasising about the local bad boy. She stated that: "I used to fantasize that we grew up in the same neighbourhood and that James Dean moved away and became a big star" and this song reflects that desire of wanting him. Apparently, it is the only track from the album not be performed live :o What are your thoughts on this sprightly number from 1986?
May 8, 20206 yr 'Jimmy Jimmy' gets targeted as one of her worst of the 80s but I think it's pretty catchy! It suits the themes of love, fantasy and nostalgia that's explored elsewhere, too.
May 10, 20206 yr Author I like it, but in an album that I have such high regard for, it does fall fairly low in my rankings :( I can see why it gets a hard time tbh, although it's not terrible I don't think!

The song was included as a double A-side single in some countries with 'Burning Up' and it was included on her remix album 'You Can Dance'. The song is about Madonna's attraction for a boy, and is sprightly, joyous and oozes the care-free appeal of the debut and the sound she captured at the time. What are your thoughts on this sprightly number from 1983?
May 20, 20206 yr Author This is having renewed life on me with my discovery and resurgence of the 'You Can Dance' album :music: It sounds great on there amongst her other bangers from the 80s. Very simple, but very effective and totally 80s bliss!
May 29, 20206 yr Glad you're enjoying, Bal! :wub: This is one of my favourites, I can see why it may be overlooked by most but I find the production irresistible - the funky guitar and bassline! I've noticed a few people commenting on similarities between it and some of Jessie Ware's new music (which, may I add, is shaping up to be one of the best albums of 2020!).
June 4, 20206 yr Author 1if8j9tRIN0 04. Spotlight Putting the Spotlight onto one of her lesser known songs, this was a single released in Japan from her first remix album 'You Can Dance'. The song is about how one can be famous if they sing about it and it introduces the dance album in style. The album featured remixed versions of her more uptempo songs, and this, as of then yet unreleased song, was added on as a new track at the start of the album. What are your thoughts on this shining number from 1987?
June 4, 20206 yr I always used to overlook 'Spotlight' until the Ultimate Rate; it's nothing ground-breaking but I've grown to appreciate the fun factor of the song. It's like a combination of the production of her debut album and the cheery vocal delivery of the True Blue album tracks. I can see why they may have chosen not to release it (the song was heavily based on 'Holiday') but I think it would have been another decent hit for her, similar to how 'Gambler' or 'Causing a Commotion' performed perhaps.
June 6, 20206 yr Author I never paid this attention until the Rate too and then forgot about it again until recently as i've been jamming to You Can Dance a lot more this past month. It's a great start to that album and really sets the tone and pace well :music:

It was Madonna's first top 10 in the US and has gone on to secure itself as a real highlight of not only the album it is from but the 80s as a whole. The song is about an unfulfilled love and Madonna presents this through her emotional vocals and the passionate desperation you hear throughout it. What are your thoughts on this single from 1984?
