It's a first win for Mika in one of these and comes in the form of 'Relax, Take It Easy' which was the first single released by him in 2006 but failed to chart in the UK until 'Grace Kelly' went to the top. When Mika was a child he had a fear of the London Undergound due to crowds and noise and years later those fears became a reality whilst travelling on July 7th 2005 when the London Bombings happened and they were told to get off as the lights went out. When Mika got home, he wrote the song in 20 minutes. It uses the melody of 80's hit '(I Just) Died In Your Arms' by Cutting Crew. It peaked at 18 in early 2008 here.

2nd - 15/35 Votes

Good Charlotte take the 2nd spot with 'Girls & Boys' which is the third single to be taken from their second album The Young and Hopeless. It charted at number six which is the highest charting single for them in Britain. In 2014 the two siblings would release music under The Madden Brothers name and would put out 'We Are Done' which is quite the contrast to Good Charlotte's gritty rock output.

1st The Killers - Mr Brightside 21/35 Votes

Believe it or not the first appearance for 'Mr Brightside' at the 123 batch for the 00s and it gives The Killers another victory. It was the debut single from the band but the second to be released and peaked at 10 in 2004 but amazingly spent only a few weeks in the top 40 where first charting.. until downloads and streaming came onto the scene where it's a forever mainstay in the top 100. It's notably used in the Christmas movie The Holiday with Cameron Diaz's memorable scene singing along to it whilst drinking.

2nd Take That - Rule The World 14/35 Votes

Take That 'Rule The World' won the #5's Survivor and came 3rd in the no.44 Survivor and so on a 3rd time appearing makes it to runner up. It's the soundtrack from Stardust where it was stuck at 2 being held off by Leona Lewis's 'Bleeding Love' in 2007.

Gwen easily wins this survivor with her 4th single 'Cool' off the debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. The track has been compared to Cyndi Lauper and Madonna's 80's music and is about an ex boyfriend and how they have separated but remain "Cool" as good friends. Gwen was dating bassist of No Doubt Tony Kanal between 1987 to 1994 which also inspired their hit song 'Don't Speak'. It peaked at 11 in the summer of 2005.

Britney Spears manages to come runner up with 'Break The Ice' which peaked at 15 in March 2008. It's the third single off Britney's fifth album Blackout and won a online poll for choice for next single over her planned 3rd single 'Radar' instead. The video is an anime-influenced animation and was produced by a South Korean studio called Studio Animal.

A battle of dance acts for the win in this edition and it's Paul Oakenfold who comes out the victor with his top 10 release from 2002 with featured vocals from the late Shifty Shellshock from Crazytown in the form of 'Starry Eyed Surprise'. The track uses the sample of 'Everybody’s Talkin' by Harry Nilsson which in itself is a cover originally sung by Fred Neil.

It's a second win for 'Viva La Vida' but not in convincing style compared to the #25 round. Coldplay recently returned back to the charts with this song as well as 'Yellow' and 'Sparks', the latter which made it's top 40 presence for the first time this year. 'Viva La Vida' spent one week at 1 back in June 2008.

Months before he popped up with a bright yellow jacket rapping himself on stage with girls portraying as teenagers, Daz Sampson's dance project with Paul Keenan as Uniting Nations stormed to the top 10 with their cover of the Hall & Oates US #1 'Out Of Touch'. Train nab the win with 'Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me'). It was the first introduction to most by the band but it was in actuality the lead single off their 2nd album as they had a US top 20 hit in 1998 from their first album. It peaked at 10 in 2001. The signature strings heard were by arranger Paul Buckmaster who scooped a Grammy for his piece. Outside of this single Train weren't heard of in the UK for 8 years until they showed back up in the charts with 'Hey, Soul Sister' which quickly ended their one hit wonder status over here when it became a long running top 20 hit and is their most streamed song!

2nd ; 13/34 Votes

In second place meanwhile is an.. to this day one hit wonder from dance group Divine Inspiration. Their track 'The Way (Put Your Hand In My Hand') made the top 5 in January of 2003. The follow up peaked at 55 and then another release in 2005 failed to chart.

It's another Kylie win with 'On A Night Like This', second single released from her first album of the 21st Century Light Years and followed the chart topper comeback in 'Spinning Around'. OANLT peaked at 2 being held off by Modjo. Originally recorded by Swedish singer Pandora for her 1999 album No Regrets but the composers felt it wouldn't gain as much success as they hoped and so handed it to Parlophone whose label Kylie signed with in 98 and asked her to sing it. Greek artist Anna Vissi also obtained rights to the track as well and changed the production from the others. Dutch actor Rutger Hauer portrayed Kylie's on screen mob partner and husband in the music video filmed in Monte Carlo and which the plot was loosely based off Martin Scorsese's 1995 crime drama movie Casino. Kylie herself playing aspects of Sharon Stones bored trophy wife.

In runner up is Scissor Sisters with 'Filthy/Gorgeous' which was the final single to be taken off their #1 debut album also titled after the bands name. It came off the back of four top 20 hits but this was the highest charting and peaked at 5 thus giving them their first top 5 hit. They'd swiftly bag themselves a sole #1 single the following year in 'I Don't Feel Like Dancin'

Guru Josh have won the survivor edition No.130 on second time appearing with 'Infinity 2008'. The first was in No.41 when the dance anthem came 3rd. It was originally released in 1990 when it then peaked at 5.. 18 years later German DJ, DJ Klaas remixed it in 2008 which helped it gain success once again and bettering the original peak by going straight in at 3 in November. German actress, TV host and model Janina Mrosek is the girl that's featured in the video for this remix. Sadly in 2015 Paul Dudley Walden took his life aged 51.

'Holding On For You' was the fifth and final single to be released from popstar rejects Liberty X who saw chart topping success earlier in the year with 'Just A Little'. It was the first ballad to be released by the group leading up to Christmas of 2002 where it peaked at 5 though it was an UK Indie #1 (!). The original version of the song appears on To Those Who Wait which was their debut album exclusively released in Japan. The single also appears on the following album X as a bonus track.

Linkin Park win out in this batch with the fourth and final single from their debut album Hybrid Theory from 2001. It was the first single of the bands to break the top 40 in the US and got to number 2 while peaking at 8 in the UK. Originally Chester didn't like the song and didn't want it to be on their album but the success proves how wrong he was. As of December 2025 it ranks among the top 50 most streamed songs of all time. It re-entered the charts in 2017 following Chester's sad passing.

Improving on it's 6th finish in No.17 EOY is Girls Aloud with their 4th chart topper 'The Promise' and finish off runner up. Featuring a drive in movie theatre reminiscent of the 50s and 60s and in black and white paying homage to acts such as The Supremes. The song won the Brit Award for song of the year in 2009 and is forever remembered for the unforgettable vocal delivery by the late Sarah Harding with the lyric 'Here I Am Walking Primrose'!
