Certifications only became automatic from July 2013 and its sales were boosted from the Q4 Christmas market. No more singles were released after The Flood underperformed so there was nothing to keep the album in the charts.

As good as 400k in 2010 seems now, I imagine the record company might have expected a bit more given this was the follow up to very successful first album and Cheryl’s profile was bigger than ever.

Messy Little Raindrops screams rush recorded when you look back now. I don’t blame them as Cheryl’s profile was huge then and X Factor was at its peak but it’s definitely her weakest solo album for me. In a way I kinda wish they just re released 3 words as a deluxe and tagged an extra 4-5 songs on there but fair play the album did well I do wish they extended it with another single though but that’s also the case for her A Million Lights album too.

OCC shared updated sales figures the other day ( https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/g...albums-biggest/ )

614,400 - What Will the Neighbours Say?

It's now 618,569, having sold 2,925 in the last week! So its previous total on 8th March was 615,644.

614,400 was a figure given in an article published on Thursday 23rd November, which I'll presume means the total is from Friday 17th November. A 16 week gap between then and 8th March, in which time it sold 1,244 copies. That's an average of around 77 or 78 copies a week (which is higher than I would have imagined!). That translates to the album selling a little over 4,000 copies in the space of a year.

I guess having five singles helps the weekly streaming sales. Wonder if this is their best selling studio album on a weekly basis?
I guess having five singles helps the weekly streaming sales. Wonder if this is their best selling studio album on a weekly basis?

I can definitely imagine this being the case!

Yes, the lack of gains for Love Machine shocked me too. I would've assumed it to be in competition with Sound of The Underground as their most streamed track after the tour, but it remained largely stagnant.

I was able to get data for Can't Speak French too: it did 3,531 streams on 10 May and 19,306 streams on 26 May. That represents a 446.76% increase in streams, meaning CSF's 10 May total made up 18.29% of its 26 May total.

Another great increase! I wonder how much the streams will skyrocket when it's time for the London shows :cheeseblock:
When you take into consideration the additional streams that the songs will be gaining from the recently released Megamix them certifications will hopefully be coming even sooner
  • 2 weeks later...

Regarding Sound of the Underground, here are total sales I found for it from over the years:

Totals:

30th November 2003 - 143,000 (this being the day before the reissue came out - 143k achieved in 27 weeks)

7th December 2003 - 169,000 (after the first week of the reissue's availability)

28th December 2003 - 245,000 (102k sales achieved for the reissue in 4 weeks)

30th December 2007 - 354,475

21st June 2009 - 366,514

21st March 2013 - 368,000

2nd August 2019 - 372,193

16th June 2023 - 377,960 (its total before the 2023 reissue was released)

23rd June 2023 - 380,885 (including the 2,925 copies that the reissue sold in its first week)

We can see that it was trickle selling quite nicely during the years that they were active, but then it really slowed down when they took their hiatus. Streaming is not their strong point, so it continues to sell slowly.

I wish I knew when exactly it passed 300,000... maybe that info is out there somewhere, but I haven't been able to find anything between Dec '03 and Dec '07! It did re-enter the chart in late 2006, so maybe it was pushed over 300k during that time?

What's interesting is that the album was certified on 28th November 2003. That being for shipments of over 300,000 (back in those days, it wasn't based on over-the-counter sales). So it seems like them shipping out the Sound of the Underground reissue at that point, meant that the album had exceeded 300,000+ shipments, well in advance of it actually selling 300,000.

This is how long their albums have spent in the UK Top 200:

158 - The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits

60 - Tangled Up

58 - Out of Control

44 - Sound of the Underground

41 - What Will the Neighbours Say?

36 - Ten

33 - Chemistry

2 - Mixed Up

2 - Girls A Live

1 - The Collection

= 435 weeks

Some of their albums were prevented from longer Top 200 chart runs, because for periods of time they were demoted to the Budget Album Chart. -_- In particular The Sound of Girls Aloud and Tangled Up could have had lengthier chart runs. TSOGA fell out of the main album chart from #10 (in January 2009) because of the rules! :drama: Tangled Up was selling enough to be in the Top 40 in January 2009, had it not been in the budget chart.

Updated the first post (pending Ten's position on Friday - assuming it's dropped out though), great to see Ten closing in on SOTU to shake off being their lowest selling album at last!
  • 3 weeks later...

The Whole Damn Show Megamix didn't chart in any charts i.e. physical/sales/vinyl

However following their Brighton Pride set, Ten re-entered the chart at #200! :D

Here's some very useless chart facts! 🤓

- Ten being at #200 this week is the first time they've ever been at #200 in the album chart

- The positions they've never placed at are: 19, 21, 51, 65, 85, 111, 112, 116, 141, 153, 155, 164, 178, 179, 188, 189, 191, 195, 196, 197

- Here's a list of the number of times they've placed at positions in the album Top 200 chart:

(#61 is the most frequently occurring position - on 8 occasions! Twice with The Sound of Girls Aloud and Ten, once with Sound of the Underground, Chemistry, Tangled Up and Out of Control)

Speaking of Ten, today is the 12th anniversary of its release.

I still wish they'd named it something that wasn't quite so specific (referencing 10 years) because it's just so out of date now, and not obviously clear that it's a Greatest Hits. I'd like it if the label would reissue The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits with a new cover and new track list, but I suppose there's not much likelihood of that.
