May 17, 20205 yr Author Going to have to break for a while here, and that means you can all enjoy First Look too. I'll prep the next section over the early evening so hopefully we can get through it a bit quicker. Scores so far, we have five full pointers left: 30: M4NGO, Chris, LewisGT, coi, Rush 28: Scene 24: StoneDragon 23: MrAndrewMan 18: Jade 16: dan-G 15: Riser See you soon!
May 17, 20205 yr Author Welcome back! I’ll try not to end too late with this. Before we go on to the last 6 questions, here’s what everyone who entered gave as their most popular song out of their 15 previous answers: Z: Favourite song in this quiz 2 Rule The World (Jade, MrAndrewMan) 2 Sex On Fire (chrissmith276, Riser) 1 Chandelier (M4NGO) 1 Chasing Cars (StoneDragon) 1 Fairytale Of New York (LewisGT) 1 Last Christmas (Scene) 1 Pompeii (coi) 1 Radioactive (Rush) That’s quite a vote split, with more songs getting a vote than not at all! dan-G left this part of the quiz blank – maybe I Gotta Feeling for a 9th different song? I like a disproportionately high number of the songs in the quiz, but I’d probably go for Chasing Cars just ahead of Fairytale Of New York. The two that narrowly win out are also from over a decade ago. Not really surprised to see a lack of Ed Sheeran here (amongst others!)
May 17, 20205 yr Taste MrAndrewMan! Hope I can avoid last, 9th at the moment is a decent position to be in I guess
May 17, 20205 yr Author OK these are the remaining questions P-U: Part 2: 10 songs with most positions held in the UK Singles Top 100 1st| P positions | Q: choose one from Songs L-O 2nd| 71 positions | R: choose one from Songs A-I 3rd| 70 positions | S: choose one from Songs A-I 4th| 67 positions | T: choose one from Songs A-I 5th| 65 positions | Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling 6th=| 63 positions | U: choose one from Songs A-I 6th=| 63 positions | one from Songs L-O 6th=| 63 positions | one from Songs L-O 6th=| 63 positions | one from Songs L-O 10th| 61 positions | Take That - Rule The World All correct answers are as at the chart week the quiz opened (w/e 14/5/2020) I’ll announce the songs in ascending order. First the songs from L-O which are joint 6th, so by definition that will tell you which song is the answer for Q. Then I’ll go through U, T, S and R in that order, and finish with P.
May 17, 20205 yr Just hoping to avoid last as well to be honest! :D Taste MrAndrewMan! :cheer: :cheer:

Edited May 17, 20205 yr by jimwatts
May 17, 20205 yr Author That means the one song left is: Q: Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars (Song M) Top 100 debut 2006 | Weeks 166 2 points: M4NGO, chrissmith276, Scene, LewisGT, coi, Rush MrAndrewMan went for Radioactive, and the rest of you all voted for songs – mostly the Killers one – which have already left the quiz. Edited May 17, 20205 yr by jimwatts
May 17, 20205 yr Author Next are questions R-U, which were the songs I asked you to pick from A-I (from the Top 40 positions list) which made it to the Top 100 positions list too. We are going to have to go into a second day I’m afraid though. I’ll do the first two of them tonight (U and T), then that will just leave the last two (S and R) and the positions for Chasing Cars (P) for me to announce as a Top 3 a bit earlier tomorrow evening! U: Pharrell Williams - Happy (Song F) Top 100 debut 2013 | Weeks 92 | Positions 63 | Rank 6th= 1-4, 6-7, 10-19, 22, 24-25, 27, 29-30, 32-35, 37, 40, 43, 48, 50, 51, 53-55, 57-59, 61, 63-66, 68-73, 77-78, 81, 83-85, 87, 89-90, 92-95, 100 2 points: M4NGO, chrissmith276, Scene, LewisGT, coi, Rush 1 point: Jade (Song S), MrAndrewMan (Song R), StoneDragon (Song T) A popular choice as it was a huge selling #1. For all that, it’s the only song in this part of the quiz that spent less than 100 weeks in the Top 100, so lands a bit lower than the next 3 songs in terms of positions visited. May 17, 20205 yr Author T: Ed Sheeran - Thinking Out Loud (Song C) Top 100 debut 2014 | Weeks 118 | Positions 67 | Rank 4th 1-8, 10, 12-14, 16-20, 23-26, 28-32, 34-35, 38, 42, 45-47, 49-52, 55, 57-59, 62-64, 68-71, 73-74, 78-79, 81-83, 85-88, 92-96, 98-100 2 points: M4NGO, chrissmith276, Scene, LewisGT, coi, Riser, Rush 1 point: Jade (Song R) This song still holds the record for most consecutive weeks in the Top 100. That's all for tonight - see you tomorrow for the finale! Edited May 17, 20205 yr by jimwatts
May 17, 20205 yr I really wish I didn't get complacent thinking that one was The Killers. I would be tied at first if I did the research.
May 17, 20205 yr I'm pretty confident now about scoring full marks on this - just hope I worked out the number right for P!
May 17, 20205 yr I'm pretty confident now about scoring full marks on this - just hope I worked out the number right for P! Same here!
May 18, 20205 yr there really weren’t many other mega long-running #6 hits to choose from beyond these two!Journey - Don't Stop Believin' was close! I noticed it when looking for #2 hits (as the Glee Cast version was one) and immediately checked, but it only had 57 positions. The 'favourite song' answers are interesting. My favourite 2 were easily 'Radioactive' and 'I Gotta Feeling' but I was the only one to pick either.
May 18, 20205 yr my answers were last minute rushed so forgot about Z it would be Fairytale of New York if I had actually got that one, otherwise Chandelier from the answers I did send.
May 18, 20205 yr my answers were last minute rushed so forgot about Z it would be Fairytale of New York if I had actually got that one, otherwise Chandelier from the answers I did send. We'll just go with 'Chandelier' then and declare it joint winner :D
May 18, 20205 yr Author Third session of answers, and this one definitely is the last! Left to reveal are the answers for S, R and P. That’s the 3 songs which have held the most positions in the Top 100. For 3rd and 2nd it’ll be a song from Part 1, and for the top song, which we know by now is Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars, the question was for the number of positions. Here’s the song in 3rd: S: Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire (Song G) Top 100 debut 2008 | Weeks 124 | Positions 70 | Rank 3rd 1-2, 4-6, 11-19, 21-23, 26-27, 29-31, 33, 37-40, 43, 45, 47, 49-57, 60-62, 66-68, 70-74, 77-95, 99 2 points: M4NGO, chrissmith276, Scene, LewisGT, coi, Riser, Rush 1 point: Jade (Song U) Kings Of Leon’s first Top 10 hit. This scores exactly the same of you score the same points as for the last one yesterday.
May 18, 20205 yr Author R: Ed Sheeran - Perfect (Song H) Top 100 debut 2017 | Weeks 125 | Positions 71 | Rank 2nd 1, 3-7, 11-13, 16, 18-19, 22-26, 28-29, 31-34, 36-38, 40, 42-44, 46-53, 55-62, 64-66, 69, 71, 73-83, 86-89, 91-93, 96-97 2 points: M4NGO, chrissmith276, Scene, LewisGT, coi, Riser, Rush 1 point: MrAndrewMan (Song S) The song that refuses to die, ACR or not. And exactly the same 2 point scorers again!! I need to divert slightly at this point, and mention that 71 positions is the number it held at the time the quiz opened. However in this week’s chart, Perfect picked up another position (#41) to add to its tally. Now I had mentioned in the rules that this week’s chart wouldn’t count towards any answers. This wouldn’t have impacted on its order among the 4 songs which came out of Part 1 (i.e. it would still be Song R). Where it would have had a far greater impact, however, is for the original questions V-Y, which were to be Part 3: Part 3: Most positions held in the UK Singles Top 50 and Top 75 [1st, Top 50] | V positions | W: choose one of the 18 songs in Parts 1 & 2 [1st, Top 75] | X positions | Y: choose one of the 18 songs in Parts 1 & 2 These questions were intended to add an extra level of challenge, as I expected there to be quite a few entrants competing for full marks. The setup was around Part 1 containing 12 songs, including the 9 songs A-I plus the older 3 songs I’d already given in the original post. Add the 6 new songs J-O in Part B, and the 18 songs altogether from Parts 1 & 2 form the pool. So those 3 older songs were in contention for this section, although that might have been easy to miss! The answers to V and W would have been Frank Sinatra - My Way with 37 positions (28 from the Top 40, plus another 9 from 41-50). At the time the quiz opened, the top songs for Top 50 positions were: 1st| 37 | My Way 2nd| 36 | Fairytale of New York 3rd=| 35 | Perfect 3rd=| 35 | Thinking Out Loud 3rd=| 35 | George Ezra - Shotgun 3rd=| 35 | Last Christmas This might have caught out a few people who didn’t realise My Way was in the quiz, leading them to think Fairytale was the answer. What I hadn’t thought through was, the OCC site has two entries for Fairytale (the main one starting in 1987 at 99 weeks and a separate one starting in 1991 at 5 weeks), and anyone who missed the latter if they were trying to count its positions, would miss some of those positions too, leading them to see a multi-way tie on 35 points, that might have led them to suspect that My Way was in contention, and was the answer. Yet with Perfect adding #41 to its collection on Friday, the top songs now look like this: 1st| 37 | My Way 2nd=| 36 | Fairytale of New York 2nd=| 36 | Perfect 4th=| 35 | Thinking Out Loud 4th=| 35 | George Ezra - Shotgun 4th=| 35 | Last Christmas This now meant that anyone who missed My Way, and also Perfect being too late with one of its positions, either saw a two-way tie on 36 points, leading them to see a multi-way tie on 35 points, that might have led them to suspect that My Way was in contention, and was the answer, or possibly also miscounted Fairytale, but in this case in would lead them to suspect Perfect was the answer. Basically, since the playing field would not have been level, I had no choice but to remove the questions. (Incidentally, as well as Shotgun, two other new songs to the quiz rank among the ten to have picked up the most positions at this level: Rather Be, which was and still is a huge Buzzjack favourite, and This Is Me, which is not.) Perfect’s progress on Friday also disrupted questions X and Y for the Top 75. The correct answer already was Perfect, with 54 positions, just ahead of Chasing Cars on 53. However, with an extra place for Perfect added, this threw out question X: mainly, should 55 points now count as correct as the recency of the 55th one would have been easy to miss for anyone coming to the quiz after Friday? In the end, to keep a level playing field these questions also had to go. This was not ideal, especially as the first 3 entrants to the quiz: M4NGO, chrissmith276 and Scene, had all spent time answering them. They were all tripped up in some way for the Top 50 questions by not realising My Way was in contention. However, they all answered X and Y correctly. So once I had answers submitted from the post-Friday top challengers (who still are LewisGT, coi and Rush), I asked out of interest how they would have answered X and Y – coi and Rush both replied and had the same correct answers as at last week. So well done to all of you, no effort was wasted! Where it leaves us is exactly where we are now, with just one answer left to reveal on the next page!
