I support this tbh  Delete it from history and never speak of it again (clearly what Melanie C wishes would happen with WOMAN lol)

If only at least we had WOMAN to criticise as much as we do with Cosmic Shower though :teresa:

30 When You’re Gone

Bryan Adams featuring Melanie C

Okay here's where things get a little controversial. It's worth stating at this point that I don't dislike anything remaining, and When You're Gone would be a lot higher in a more critical rank than a personal one because it's undeniably a classic. However, it's not a gigantic favourite of mine and I'd pick anything remaining to listen to instead of this. Perhaps the lack of a nostalgic connection to the track doesn't really help? Who knows. Either way, please don't shoot me, I did warn y'all at the start!

That’s certainly an “out there” choice! It’s a worthy point to make that a lack of nostalgic connection might be a drawback in liking it all that much. As a Spice fan who grew up in the 90s and as the first really big solo Spice song, I do like and appreciate it a lot BUT it’s actually not a song I play all that often out of choice. She has a lot of better songs!

29 Goin’ Down

I don't actually know how controversial this is, but it's worth mentioning that a relisten of this actually boosted it up a little from where I originally expected it to be. Melanie's first proper single was a bold choice, and listening so many years in the future, it seemed like a VERY risky move to put this out first instead of one of the most safer options on Northern Star! Thankfully it all worked out okay, and Goin' Down actually seems to be a grower of sorts - I remember my first listen, I really wasn't much of a fan  Perhaps in a couple of years though, if I were to revisit this countdown, I'd place this a bit higher again?

Nooooooo  Two of my favourites gone already!

When You're Gone is easily one of Mel's best songs for me, it's just pure joy and I would always describe it as a real 90's classis. The nostalgic factor, like you mentioned, definitely plays a big role in that as well. I remember going out to buy the cd single back in the day and playing it all the time, while the video was constantly on the television as well.

Goin' Down was certainly a bold release, a song I didn't appreciate as much at the time either, but I have grown to love so much.

This is how I feel! It didn’t do much for me when I was 11. Over time I’ve really come to appreciate it! Such a bold and brave statement single.

I too think that both Going Down AND When You're Gone are overrated, so this is surprising BUT also kind of satisfying ehehe

Going Down, I actually used to enjoy it but it didnt grow that much on me with time. It's a bit cringe lol

When You're Gone is a Brian Adams song and whilst it is a classic, it's a bit meh to me.

I didnt enjoy Goin Down at all when released by my God do i love it now!!

Live this song is always epic because of the signature pose and audience participation. As adults we can all relate to the lyrics. I may have a go at posting my top 35 once this is over in one post. Think i would find it impossible tho!

28 Understand

TFItanx.jpg

This Time was a funny era for Melanie singles - it produced a couple of my favourites (more on those later of course), but a couple of my least favourites too, and we've already seen I Want Candy drop out. Understand is next - it's not bad by any means, it's just a less essential track all round. It works as quite a nice album opener, but I'm not sure it needed a full single release.

The video is so bad lol

Understand has always given me Coldplay vibes !

I hear that! Might explain why it's not a top fave, I'm really not much of a Coldplay fan

27 Melt

vWlE7wx.jpg

The double A-side released to close the Reason era consisted of two songs I find quite similar in quality, but Melt is the first half to drop out. It's not the most memorable track I've found (I'm listening again to be able to type up a good enough commentary lol), but when I listen to it, I always quite enjoy! It's definitely a song that's situated in the "inessential" pile but it's really not bad by any means, the chorus in particular is a highlight for me.

I adore Understand as an album opener it's wonderful, but as a single it didn't quite work I'm not sure why... probably the terrible video
