As for High Heels - I love it! It's really feel good and sticks in the mind. Melanie just letting her hair down and having fun on a track. I hated to see the amount of Twitter negativity she received after the enjoyable performance on Graham Norton. :(

I just made this for fun (on Paint; I'm not going to claim that this is amazing so no one come for me please  ) -

LOL at Melanie C being relegated to a tiny name  I don't even care I'd buy this

:w00t: yyyeeeessssss

I had no idea Understand even was a single! Wow. Guess you learn something new every day. It was always a highlight for me on the This Time record, great opening track.

I LOVE High Heels. It's campy and fun, a different direction for Mel, and I think this worked very well for her. Good collaboration with Sink the Pink and a great tribute to last year's Pride tour.

24 Weak

eSMuJ3u.jpg

The second single from The Sea saw Melanie bring us another ballad. This one isn't her very best ballad, and considering I discovered tracks like First Day of My Life, The Moment You Believe, Let There Be Love, Better Alone, etc all at the same time, Weak starts to feel a little inessential by comparison. It's by no means a bad song, in fact I really like it (and The Sea is my favourite of her albums!), but she simply has many better for me.

Now you really are being absurd ranking this lower than the likes of Better Alone and Let There Be Love !!

You are entertaining to say the least !!!

23 Yeh Yeh Yeh

GMGdCpm.jpg

I've actually bumped this up a place or two since I opened this thread. Yeh Yeh Yeh's been in my head for much of the last couple of days, I've really underrated it! Perhaps it's another one that will be higher if I did a second countdown in a year's time? (not sure I'd inflict that on poor vibe :kink: x) Nevertheless, Yeh Yeh Yeh outdoes its double A-side by four positions. Three Reason singles still remain in!

I just catched up on your whole thread and i have to say your taste is v similar to mine although Yeh Yeh Yeh is too low x

You know I respect your opinions Joseph & of course taste is subjective! There’s no right or wrong way to approach these songs, and I honestly think it’s really nice that the generally less appreciated Mel C moments are songs that you’re liking!

So this post is of course just my point of view regarding the songs & hopefully some interesting comments on how the singles were received back in the day. Definitely not a suggestion that Joseph shouldn’t feel how he feels (I know you’ll know this  This disclaimer is mainly for the benefit of others so that they can understand where I’m coming from).

I have to say, I definitely prefer Weak to almost every song listed by comparison! Maybe I like First Day of My Life slightly more. I think if I was to present a Melanie C rank, those other songs would have departed by now!

At the time of release, The Moment You Believe came across to me like it was intentionally created to try and replicate the success of First Day, which I suppose was an understandable business move, but I feel that the song was too mellow by comparison & didn’t hit in the same way. I do quite like it, but it’s more of a “this is pleasant, easy listening” reaction. Not very special for me though.

Let There Be Love is ok, but I do tend to forget about it. It was certainly a “This was a big German hit, this is a perfect career move” moment, but unfortunately it fell completely flat... not just in Germany (where it didn’t chart despite an X Factor performance!), but a lot of the fan base felt “meh” towards it! It just felt very done before. I think it indicated that she was stuck in a rut and that she had maybe lost faith in the better material she had on The Sea (or her label had).

Maybe I’m harsh on Better Alone because I still think it was such a crazy choice to be the second single from Beautiful Intentions. Left as an album track and I might have less negative feelings towards it. It seems clear that Melanie thought it was an incredibly strong song, but I never heard hit potential. I’ll always find it interesting that despite feeling like she had no choice but to cancel its UK release, this didn’t deter her from attempting to make Better Alone a hit elsewhere in 2006, even filming a second video for it! The outcome was exactly what I expected - a very minor hit at best, and she damaged the momentum she’d built up with First Day of My Life.

I think Weak sits apart from these other songs by having more of an urgency to the production, more intent behind the lyrics... I sense more passion in it. A highlight moment from The Sea! I still can’t quite believe this was the single that was her first to miss the Top 200. :( At least it was nice that Radio 2 believed in it, and they’ve been pretty supportive ever since.

I’m excited to see where these songs eventually place in your rank, Joseph! *.*

Yeh Yeh Yeh is such an anthem, it always used to be one of my favourite Mel songs. I do like it a bit less compared to back in the day, but it will always have a special place in my heart.

Interesting to read all of these views!! I suppose this rank hasn't allowed a great deal of time for songs to grow on me much since first hearing them - perhaps Weak is one I'll enjoy more on repeated listens? I know there's already a load of tracks that could quite easily place differently if I were to do this again in the future. I expect even one month down the line would see a slightly reshuffled order!

Also worth noting that I genuinely like every song remaining, and also most of those that are out already! She's got such a surprisingly strong discography. It's quite easy for the general public to sideline a pop group member's solo material, but Melanie really sticks out as having a brilliantly strong discography. It's so unusual for me to discover 95% of it in one go too, and I really wish I'd been on the journey the whole time! (I mean, I loved Emma's Free Me era at the time so I have no idea why I wasn't really aware of Melanie C when I was 7 years old lol...!!) That definitely benefits the lesser-known tracks too, considering they've had just as much exposure to me as most of her hits.

22 Numb

Sons of Sonix featuring Melanie C

QekXRoO.jpg

Interestingly the first time I heard this one was in BJSC  Melanie's collaboration with Sons of Sonix set the tone well for her Version of Me album, showing a more dance-pop side. Melanie sounds REALLY great on this production, even if it's not the most inspired track going. I wish there was more of a chorus though...!

Numb needs to remain on her setlist for the next tour !! It fits in with the new material !

Fully agreed! It's really helped set the tone for what she released after

21 The Moment You Believe

U5qAVw2.jpg

The lead single from This Time only just misses my top 20. Another ballad release following First Day of My Life, The Moment You Believe doesn't quite hit the heights that one did, but it's a pretty nice track even if the album would go on to deliver a couple of better singles (in fact, only two of the five This Time singles remain in at this point!). It's a lovely track nonetheless, the piano melody is gorgeous.
