I always really enjoyed Better Alone and it's UK video is also gorgeous. But yeah as a single, it never worked.

So strange how attached she seemed to it. It seemed to me that she was trying to compensate for not having released Reason as the second single from that album, as a way to turn things around, maybe?

Specially odd when she flopped with it already in the UK and then threw everything at it again in Germany lol like, let it go?!

This would have been a good run of singles for the album:

1. Beautiful Intentions

2. Next Best Superstar

3. You'll Get Yours (single mix, shorter and a bit better produced lol, more punchy)

4. Little Piece of Me

5. First Day of My Life

:D

You’ll Get Yours is a masterpiece !! Her best ever song

Singles for BI

1. NBS

2. Little Piece Of Me (this just screams hit)

3. Beautiful Intentions

4. You’ll Get Yours

Maybe leave it on your doorstep for safe keeping? I doubt anyone would take it from there :o

18 If That Were Me

This is another one I've bumped further up over the course of this thread. With repeated listens, I've enjoyed the simplicity of If That Were Me more and more. The fifth and final single from Northern Star saw Melanie dial back the bops for a moment for this more sombre release. What sets this apart from her other ballads is the rousing production, which suits her voice to a T. Lovely track and a great way to finish the era!

Jesus I had forgotten about If That Were Me

Honestly, she should have kept this as an album track. I know it was 'for charity' of whatever but the song just plods along and the lyrics are embarrasing on this one. A multi-millionaire singing quite condescendingly about homelessness to 'give back'.

It's the Spice equivalent to Gal Gaddot and her Hollywood pals singing 'Imagine' during this pandemic... Tone deaf good intentions :kink:

I’m a huge fan of IFTWM . I agree it completely suits her voice and she sings it live with ease.

However closer was screaming to close the album campaign.

THIS! I love ITWM it's a gorgeous song, I also don't the entire "a multi-millionaire singing songs about homeless people is galling." Just because she has money doesn't mean she can't have sympathy for others and want to encourage people to help them. I mean going by that standard only homeless people could talk about it and it would be just as hypocritical for me to give sandwiches and coffee to the homeless man who sits outside the train station I use daily. We don't know what she was doing behind the scenes to help as well as this.

However Closer was SCREAMING to be the last single, a shortened radio edit of the song would surely have been another top 5/10

Careful, you might hurt your back with all that reach :teresa:

No-one is saying that Melanie isn't charitable, or that she is taking advantage of the situation, or that only homeless people should be able to say something/do something. It's the content that is slightly condescending that is all.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on that one Mr X... and my back is only slightly sore thank you

Better Alone is such a stunning song, maybe it was not the best/smartest second single choice as I don't think it's very radio friendly, but I do love it a lot and would have liked to see it a bit higher here. Same for If That Were Me, beautiful song.

17 Room for Love

300x300w.png

Though I knew Anymore and Dear Life well around the time they came out, Room for Love kinda passed me by - unfortunately so! The production really sticks out in her discography and it was easily one of my favourites from Version of Me, so I'm really glad it got the single treatment even if it was pretty darn late in the campaign. I'd actually say it deserved to be single 3? Really good track nonetheless

I think room for love is overrated , in fact the whole album is . It would prob not be in my top 20.
