I've been a fan of this song for a year now, and it's become a thing on TikTok! I'd love to see Wallows have a hit here.

it would be great if something indie non-urban could be a Tiktok hit for a change :)

now that I think about it, there's also Dadi Freyr as a sorta-indie TikTok hit

 

what is really incrediuble is how Dadi Freyr is currently #3 in Ireland and has been top 5 for the last 3 weeks, why can't that happen in the UK!!

People just like to throw in the word 'urban' for anything representing a black person, let's be real. Say So is a pop song through and through, it just has a rap verse. Blinding Lights, another TikTok hit, not urban in any way, with an 80s synthpop sound, but fronted by a black man.

Great article - I agree that it's a really lazy term labelled onto anything by a black artist. There's so many varied genres typically characterised by black artists, which is why even on this forum, we lazily get Say So and Blinding Lights branded as urban like Rob said. It's a term we should learn not to use (and it's why I changed the "R&B and Urban" forum to "R&B and Hip-Hop" not all that long ago).

I remember there was discussion relating to Normani's Motivation being ignored as a pop song a while ago as well.

 

I don’t get why Motivation didn’t perform better than it did.

I don't think I've ever heard the likes of Macklemore or Eminem being referred to as urban! Very good point I heard the Republic Records news on the radio earlier and fully agree it's another one of those things that society has just accepted when we can be better than that.
