April 27, 20232 yr I'm more upset by the exclusion of I Was Made that Way One of Geris absolute peak moments for sure.
April 28, 20232 yr she performed I Was Made that Way and circles round the moon on CD:UK or totp I guess

April 30, 20232 yr I do find it strange that 'Feels Like Sex' was considered strong enough to be the lead single before 'It's Raining Men' came along & then scrapped entirely. I'm not saying it's a lost gem or anything, but its surprising that it wasn't considered as a potential 2nda single, doubt it would have done any better than the title track if it was released. This is my perception too...but it is an interesting thought. How would Feels Like Sex have fared as a lead single? My general thought is the Spice Girls had a basic level of edginess that was expected/accepted by their fanbase. It was a level that included the outfits of the Say You'll Be There video, the safe sex lyrics of 2 Become 1, Geri's parade of pink underwear men at the Brits, etc. The very few times they went edgier than that...I don't think it really paid off for them. I'm specifically referring to Mel C's Goin Down and Mel B's original Word Up video and Hot album. Granted, I say that while knowing the Hot album's biggest problem was releasing so close to Forever. But I also don't believe the parental advisory sticker exactly helped sell copies. Some of the girls were pulling from Madonna's playbook, but my guess is the fanbases were a bit different...and controversy didn't equal sales for the girls with quite the same effectiveness it often did for Madonna. It's not that I think Feels Like Sex is really all that edgy. But a song with that title was going to draw a lot of attention. Tabloids would have been clutching their pearls. Would it have translated to sales? We'll never really know, but I *think* it would have made the lower end of the top 10 like Scream and Calling did. Another question. What would a video for this song look like...?
April 30, 20232 yr They thought Feels Like Sex is gonna be Bag it up 2.0 but thank god they didn't go with it her team was right with this choice LOL
May 1, 20241 yr Geris version of It’s Raining Men has really held its own as a quality cover. Still seems very popular and beloved. Many covers don’t achieve that.
May 1, 20241 yr If crimes against music were punishable by law, she would be given a life sentence for her version of it.
May 2, 20241 yr If crimes against music were punishable by law, she would be given a life sentence for her version of it. See I normally agree with your posts but this is SO wrong! I think Geris cover is better the original is too screechy.
May 2, 20241 yr I'm staying mostly out of the conversation but my take is that Gerita's version of It's Raining Men is like the McDonald's version of a real burger. Cheap and easy but not even with 2% of the taste of a real burger. Sorry lads. It's successful and fun, for sure though!
May 2, 20241 yr Author Maybe it helps that I heard Geri’s version first, so for me - certainly at the time and for a long while afterwards - I regarded it as being her original song. Her version has a lot of energy to it and a great video that matched that energy… as a package, it all came across as being very exciting! Also I don’t think it being attached to Bridget Jones was any guarantee of it being a smash on the level that it was.

Also I don’t think it being attached to Bridget Jones was any guarantee of it being a smash on the level that it was. Oh I agree with the first part of your answer. But not the second. It's Raining Men was a pivotal song for the Bridgit Jones movie as well as for Geri. They went hand in hand in terms of promoting them both. Sadly for Geri, it overshaddowed her own album. Geri made the same mistake as Emma did with Downtown. Both launched their respective albums off the back of mainstream campaigns with solo covers which didnt sell the albums (although of course with different degrees of success and in different eras!) She should have waited for the summer to release another single which would lunch the album. Sadly, Scream (single) was not a good follow up at all either, same with Calling.
May 2, 20241 yr Geri's version is decent, she has always sounded better in her lower register like Look at me and It's raining men. Which is why it is baffling in her later years she has insisted on singing in a higher register, especially as voices deepen with age too.
May 3, 20241 yr I remember when it was announced Geri was covering It's Raining Men. I was assuming she'd be singing it with that sort of impression of Shirley Bassey she flirted with on Look At Me and Summertime. But I actually think what we got was much better than my assumption. As Geri's singles go, I do prefer most of her originals. However, I get why the song was such a big hit. I'm not a fan of most of the solo Spice cover songs because the girls had a tendency to just copy everything. But. There have been a handful of times one of the girls reinterpreted a song in an interesting way. One of those would be Mel B's Word Up...another is Geri's It's Raining Men. I think it's an interesting project just because on paper, it all sounds so random. Geri definitely doesn't have the pipes of the Weather Girls. As for the video, It's Raining Men is kinda of the era of Fame and Flashdance, but there's not a connection beyond that. And yet. For me, the song and video do work. Last thought. I remember original Weather Girl Martha Wash saying she didn't like Geri's cover. Which is fair. Martha has a powerful voice. Though...what's been kinda forgotten to time is Martha herself released a duet of It's Raining Men with RuPaul in the late 90s. And it's also fair to say...Geri's is a few stratospheres better than that version.
