I think it is very interesting to have a storyline revolving the character who is in the closet and has yet to discover their sexuality or gender identity. Especially for growing up, this process is unique to everyone coming from different background, so I think this TV series has done well in, while not being too overly unrealistic.

I don't think it's such a bad idea to have a show like this where the sexuality IS the driving force of the narrative for a change. There are so many coming-of-age shows and films for straight people but this is unique in displaying how a young gay guy discovers himself and the journey he takes. The fact we know his family will likely not be accepting feels like an important part of why Victor almost forces himself to love Mia, who he clearly cares for very much but not in a sexual way. It's a journey that so many young people will be able to relate to and it's an important display of the effects of homophobia and what the fear and paranoia of "coming out" will make people do. We've seen that in season 1, and now season 2 will surely look at the impacts of Victor's pretending, the reaction of his parents and of course the early days of Victor and Benji's relationship, so there's plenty of plot points for Victor alone aside from just coming out. Then you look at the relationship between Felix and his mother that was touched on and will hopefully be revisited, the development of Lake, and naturally the huge impact of Mia and how her relationship with Andrew could now develop.

It's all well and good comparing the show to other LGBTQ+ representations but there's room for them all. Something like It's a Sin was truly brilliant but in a different way, and at different stages of the journey. Victor's a lot earlier along the self-discovery process than any of the main characters in that were. Just because none of the characters needed a coming out scene, it doesn't mean It's a Sin is better representation automatically - coming out is a big part of the journey as many of us know and it *has* to be an important plot-point in a coming-of-age LGBTQ+ show, because it has to do right by the young people that will be impacted by it.

Fair enough if the show's not for you, but I strongly disagree that it's not good LGBTQ+ representation. I think it's actually some of the best representation out there right now.

it's just a bit tale as old as time for me... that's my issue... we've seen kids struggling with their sexualities in tv shows for donkey years ('Ugly Betty' comes to mind immeditially). Would just be more of an interesting narrative for what appears to be the arc of S2 to be the main arc.

 I completely agree with that, Joseph!

I really don’t think it would have made much sense to create a series with a teenage gay guy as its main character but totally bypass the struggles of accepting his own sexuality & experiencing the coming out process! This is a universal first step for gay people, so it rings true to see it play out on screen in this series.

The target audience that this show is primarily aimed at possibly won’t have seen many or any older examples of TV shows using this storyline. Also I think you’d be hard pushed to find many examples of other shows where this is the main focus of the show, rather than told via a side character / subplot.

“Boy meets girl” is a tale as old as time used as the central plot device in countless TV series and movies. I actually think Love, Victor can be considered as being rather progressive and unique.

Is it available in the UK yet?

18th June on Disney+ here, but only one episode a week :( I couldn’t wait that long, not when it’s all online now (in the US the entire season is already on Hulu).

That's so annoying, I wonder why they've gone down that route if the whole season is available already?! What a strange move.

I have a lot to watch at the moment but I'll give the first episode a go on Friday and if it is as good as the first series, I'll probably just try and find a streaming link or something.

I've watched the entire season now and I think it's better than the first series! I think you're going to really enjoy it!

A few niggles I had with Season 1 were rectified - the main one being that the tone feels somewhat more adult and less Disney "family friendly". I think this has allowed some good character development - for instance Lake comes across as more humanised, while retaining her quirks and humour.

Ana Ortiz had some incredible scenes throughout this season, she is so good... she deserves awards!

Spoilers...

I appreciated that Love, Victor went with the direction that it was Victor's mother who immensely struggled with the coming out, rather than the father - this felt less predictable. It was really rewarding to see her slowly but surely come around, particularly when she stands up for her son and quits that church. Sadly, I can relate to the initial cold reaction and subsequent distancing, from when I came out to my own parents... and they never quite came around to the extent that Isabel does... sigh!

Rahim is a really welcome addition to the cast, I warmed to him super quickly! I just wish he'd been introduced more gradually earlier in the season - his introduction felt a bit sudden.

Episode 9 was really great, such great chemistry between Victor and Rahim.

As for that cliff-hanger, oh my goodness... I am Team Rahim. I have a feeling it's more likely that he's running to Benji though. I don't feel that Benji deserves this though... I sensed something more natural between Victor and Rahim in two episodes than between Victor and Benji in two seasons lol~

This video also contains some spoilers, so don't watch this if you've not seen season 2 yet:

I agree so much about the tone this season, they got it spot on and clearly Hulu taking charge from the start this season has had a positive effect on what's deemed "acceptable" for their platform. The show's flourished and every character had something interesting to do. I loved Armando's positive attitude, going to the PFLAG meetings! Isabel's scenes were often hard to watch but obviously important to tackle, and I loved seeing her come round in the end - THAT scene with the priest!!!!

I like Rahim but I'm hesitant to ship him with Victor. It's quite common in shows, particularly soaps like EastEnders, that all of the gay characters seem to date each other on a carousel (or they all have to date Ben Mitchell like a rite of passage). I was hoping Rahim could be Victor's friend, a fellow gay that he doesn't necessarily need a romantic link with. There's some level of chemistry but I'm not actually convinced Victor was considering anything more than friendship with him until the kiss. Therefore, it would make sense to me that he picks Benji - I don't see him considering a future with Rahim that soon!

I do like how they've showed the ups and downs of a teen relationship and of course, at that age, relationships can be volatile - burning bright and fast. However, I'd really like to see them show a gay couple that can actually last - I think TV in general lacks this and it's common not just among gay couples but so many, because blowing couples up is an easy route for storylines. I'd love to see the next chapter for Victor and Benji so I hope we 1) get a season 3 and 2) see that Victor picked Benji lol...!

Elsewhere, I'm here for Pilar and Felix actually despite really liking Felix and Lake. Perhaps the blow has been softened by Lake getting a fresh start of her own - what a great and exciting twist, I can't wait to see what's next for her! Felix has been the star again, the scenes with his mum were so heartbreaking to watch. Such an amazing show!

I KNEW it was this Friday! FFS. I'll watch in a min.

I don't mind the episodes being 1 per week, but when they have the full thing out there on their other streaming service... WHAT?! Makes ZERO sense lmao!

:cheer:

I wonder if we’ll have to wait until June 2022? I want to know

who Victor ran to! I’m sure it’ll be Benji... kind of makes more sense from a narrative point of view considering their relationship has been focused on for 2 seasons, whereas Rahim is very new.
