In the closest round I think i've ever seen in a survivor before, we say good bye to a very respectable 3rd place Rhythm Nation 1814. The album was tied with the other two albums, each with five votes before getting the killer's blow. And what an album we lose! While her label wanted her to continue along the successful vibes of the Control album, Janet had different plans: she wanted to create a concept album that dealt with social injustices and global issues. The result was this album, which shows a vision of a world rising above the tragedies reported through news media at the time, exploring racism, poverty, substance abuse and so much more. The album combines a variety of sounds, particularly the juxtaposition of the harsh, pounding industrial sounds alongside the soft ballad moments. All of this meant that the album could be mass appealing and this was reflected in its chart performance and the legacy it leaves today. Some of the records the album set included: the best-selling album of 1990 in the US, the only album in the history of the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart to have seven singles peak within the top five positions, the only album to produce number one hits on the chart in three separate calendar years (1989–1991), and it spawned the most successful debut concert tour by a recording artist. The singles were equally as successful: Miss You Much', Rhythm Nation', 'Escapade', 'Alright', 'Come Back to Me', Black Cat', 'Love Will Never Do (Without You)' and 'State of the World'.

Those achievements set by 'Rhythm Nation' are OUTSTANDING! And such a huge, successful, influential album "only" coming 3rd? She really did THAT with her masterpiece albums in the 90s
Janet is my favourite. The Velvet Rope has some essential highs but it tails off for me in a way that the self titled album doesn't.

Both are absolutely incredible listens, but my heart is always with The Velvet Rope so I have to vote for that! Either would make for worthy winners though
Just having an early morning listen to If and This Time... my god that is still such a great back to back! And THAT breakdown in the latter still floors me! :drama:

The Velvet Rope! In my top 10 of all time, such a perfect album.

janet. is incredible too but not quite in the same league for me.

Totally with you on the This Time breakdown, Dandy! What a moment

Isn't it just though! It simply HAS to be blasted out at full volume. @Haus if you don't use it in the AF Idol spin-off then there may be blood!
