is it even a cover? maybe I misunderstood but they just used some filter or software that slows down the song and adds distortion,

you just get any song and push play and you get things like *THAT COVER

there should be a law against these awful covers of slow + reverb

Clairo - Sofia original

slowed + reverb

this is not even a cover just the original slowed down, but as a result it doesn't sound like Clairo at all

I kind of admire though that the remix of "Roses", one of the most transformative and successful remakes of late was made in 2 hours.

The Clairo slowed down is a "thing" on TikTok and that's why the song is charting now, it's been doping very well on Apple

can we go back to when the singles charts were decided by grown up people :D

Royal Blood single was added to HH, but as expected.. low low low.
I don't think that's ever been the case

in the 80s and 90s, the same artists were doing well in both the singles and album charts

cos there was not this big divide in who's contributing to singles and album charts

mostly cos 7"/12"singles and later CD singles were pretty expensive

a kid age 12 in the 80s couldn't afford so many

but with the advent of streaming, now kids age 12 can stream for free

it's called the infantilisation of the charts :D that's how they called it in a talk I went to in London a while back where they explained it :D

oh good they added Royal Blood to HH, even if low, maybe it can help them getting their first top 40 single

they also added the Corinne Bailey Rae cover to HH, so now sure it will be a hit :/

Surely it's more reflective of what's genuinely popular with the UK public now that it's much more accessible to contribute to the charts? It might not be to everyone's taste as obviously different generations have different tastes but children do still count as part of our population as much as any adult does!

I find Bjork's ongoing obsession with 12 year olds slightly disconcerting x Btw I don't know why you've even brought it up but no one is trying to claim that slowed & reverb versions of songs are meant to be 'covers', they're generally just unofficial edits made by fans because some people like that aesthetic. They're totally harmless.

Anyway, I actually quite like the Ritt Momney cover, it's definitely preferable to most of the bland dance remakes that have polluted the charts recently.

Unrelated: 'For The Night' coming to potentially re-overtake 'Mood Swings'? (the latter probably still quite far ahead when combined with the Summer Walker remix though)

It's ironic really that now young people can contribute to the chart a lot more easily, the sort of bubblegum pop and novelty music that used to be aimed at kids has disappeared from view completely!

Walking along the street earlier a bunch of 7/8 year old girls were listening to Drake/Pop Smoke/AJ Tracey etc on their phone, I can't really imagine that 7/8 year olds in the 90s were listening to Snoop Dogg/Dr Dre/Wu Tang Clan etc at home or on their walkmans, they were all obsessed with Boyzone and Spice Girls and other very wholesome stuff.

My own theory is that with the rise of social media, children are growing up a lot quicker and are desperate to be taken more serious and seen as 'cool' to impress their peers and a wider audience, so they listen to music that makes them feel that way and helps them come across that way in their eyes. Maybe it is just a trend currently but popular chart music does feel a lot more serious than it used to 5-10 years ago.

I kinda feel this except I don't think it's children, but teens & young adults. Granted I never understood the audience at the time, but like it's hard to imagine an /r/popheads thread on a new Pitbull single getting much traction even though that subreddit is populated by people who grew up on him dominating the charts.

I think though the big shift is because streaming throws away the financial process. There's no second guessing of 'will I still want to listen to this song in a week, a year, a decade' which results in the sales chart shifting into fanbase purchases and gen X/early millennial oriented Hot AC. Streaming shows that deep down a lot of people just want to listen to the big trap bangers of the moment whether or not they stick with them...and this is a good thing because gating the popular consensus around only the people who have enough disposable cash to buy CDs & iTunes downloads is not very good (and I question anyone who thinks poor people shouldn't have a say).
