September 22, 20204 yr Author 5th place - Doop - Doop 4.9 xNGXLxAOjZQ Probably despised by others as much as I despise Saturday Night. I never ever play this out of choice but I wasn't stabbing my ears with knitting needles either. Apparently, only the second ever number one by an artist and song with the same title - the first being Mr Blobby - Mr Blobby. Fine company to be keeping.
September 22, 20204 yr not a fan of Doop, actually worst than Saturday Night I reckon but I do like Always, I even bought the parent Greatest Hits :D I think it's a good rock ballad
September 22, 20204 yr Author It's not the worst song in the world. I think 4.5 is a fair score. Anything between 4 and 6 is ok.
September 22, 20204 yr Author 4th place - Mariah Carey - Without You 5.4 Hat1Hc9SNwE I used to rather like this. It's a fairly sturdy rendition, suffering from far too many notes, as do many of her songs. I've had mixed feelings while re-listening - the first time was impressive but now her vocal tone has outstayed its welcome. I've always been on the fence regarding her voice.
September 22, 20204 yr Author 3rd place - All-4-One - I Swear 6.8 K7QwCrlM7RE Now we're on to songs I actually enjoyed listening to. This is a pleasant in a sort of "Heal the World" way. :D . Back in 1994 I didn't really have much time for this song, at all. R'n'B came a long way in the decades since then. I only just found out that it was originally a country song. :o
September 22, 20204 yr Author 2nd place - Let Loose - Crazy For You 7.3 K-gbKARSoI0 I kinda had a feeling that I would really like this on re-listen. I'm sure some people hate it - given that it stayed in the charts for months, and was the 5th most played song in the UK that year.
September 22, 20204 yr Author 1st place - East 17 - Stay Another Day 7.9 -wNhdjoF-6M This was an easy choice. Nothing else was going to be in the running for 1st place. I still remember the first time I heard it - I'd been much more of an East 17 fan than a Take That Fan and this just crowned it for me. It just builds and builds and those damn bells. It's probably too sweet for some tastes. The band try to pretend that it wasn't a Christmas song - that's rather like Nirvana pretending that Smells Like Teen Spirit wasn't a grunge song.
September 22, 20204 yr I prefer “Crazy For You” to “Stay Another Day” although the latter does get a bonus point for holding Mariah Scary off the number 1 at Christmas in 1994! There's a great cover by Maps that was released in 2008 and although it isn't specifically a Christmas song it has become forever associated with it like “The Power Of Love”. There is just something about hearing the opening piano of “Crazy For You” that takes me back to summer 94, and of course it flopped first time out the year before and unlike most throwaway boyband singles which went in at their peak and plummeted, it only very slowly climbed the chart and should probably have been a number 1.
September 22, 20204 yr Author It outsold all but 5 of the number 1s and it's vastly superior to Love is All Around so, I agree. It deserved number 1 status. 1994 had a lot of long running or slow burning hits...I Like to Move It, Swamp Thing, Seven Seconds, Always, Linger, Return to Innocence and Crazy For You. September 23, 20204 yr love slow chart runs, was checking the chart run for 7 Seconds and it went: 40-35-36-26-24-24-18-11-8-4-4-{3}-7-9-14-25-35-37-47-64-74-68R(6)-60-54-66 and the week it peaked at #3, Confide in me debuted at #2, both blocked by Love is all around :o think around 94/95 is when the labels started changing tactics to make sure songs debuted at #1 instead of climbing
September 23, 20204 yr Author love slow chart runs, was checking the chart run for 7 Seconds and it went: 40-35-36-26-24-24-18-11-8-4-4-{3}-7-9-14-25-35-37-47-64-74-68R(6)-60-54-66 and the week it peaked at #3, Confide in me debuted at #2, both blocked by Love is all around :o think around 94/95 is when the labels started changing tactics to make sure songs debuted at #1 instead of climbing I believe it was Living Joy's Dreamer when a record company first implemented all it's high chart placing strategies in the first week on sale - pre-release airplay, multiple cds, multiple formats and reduced price during the first week.
September 23, 20204 yr Author 1991 was pretty bad but 1995 is border-line upsetting 10th place - Robson & Jerome - Unchained Melody 3.4 8fgUY-kXlBA As bad a place to start as any - this is just insipid and limp. Edited September 23, 20204 yr by Colm
September 23, 20204 yr Author 9th place - Oasis - Wonderwall 4.0 bx1Bh8ZvH84 Liam's voice is usually a positive thing when it comes to Oasis songs. Constant overplaying has just ruined this. The ending is rather good.
September 23, 20204 yr Author 8th place - Michael Jackson - Earthsong 4.1 XAi3VTSdTxU I used to like this. It feels so unwholesome now, in a very unsettling way. ________________________________________________________________________ 7th place - Michael Jackson - You Are Not Alone 4.4 pAyKJAtDNCw Not the comeback we expected. Its one saving grace is that it's not Earthsong. Edited September 23, 20204 yr by Colm
September 23, 20204 yr Author 6th place - Simply Red - Fairground 4.5 KiRyiVgWj6g There's very little between these songs. This at least scores points for not sounding like the previous 5,000 Simply Red songs. It's hard to imagine this selling 700,000 if it wasn't by Simply Red. Edited September 23, 20204 yr by Colm
September 23, 20204 yr Author 5th place - Robson & Jerome - I Believe 4.7 b74A7BP6Rvo Scoring points for not being Unchained Melody and for actually pushing their voices. Still, below average.
September 23, 20204 yr Author I must spend some time with the next 3 songs so I can order them properly. 1st place was secure before I even started this thread.
