Sammy and I can at least agree on one thing, Here It Comes Again is very overrated. It never should have been a single.

  • Living without you is a masterpiece

  • Listening again to the album (and some b-sides) this morning, I find that the album has aged a bit better than I expected too. Not sure I will ever invest in this vinyl unless I can find it for cheap

Wonder whose decision it was to release that one as a lead single.... Knowing Mel, I would guess it was her?

I personally love Here it comes again her vocals sound amazing and I think the song builds beautifully. I think it was an obvious lead single but it would have been to have it as a double a-side with Yeh, Yeh, Yeh. That’s the beauty of music though what one person thinks is shit someone else thinks is great.

I would have gone

1. Here it comes again / Yeh, yeh, yeh

2. On the horizon

3. I love you without trying (which would have been on the album)

4. Let’s love / Positively somewhere (if successful enough to warrant a fourth single)

Reason actually started out fairly well and much better than Northern Star did with over 30k first week sales so HICA did it’s part unfortunately the follow up singles did not.

HICA had no impact on Reasons opening week sales I'm sure. It sold 30k on the back of a very successful album. I'd happily wager she would have sold just as many if not more first week without a lead single.

She actually opened with less than Scream if you wanna go faster and Free Me iirc, which actually shows you HICA was probably more of a hindrance than selling point. Emma and Geri opened with bigger 1st weeks for their 2nd albums despite selling a 7th and half of NS with their debut albums.

Yeh Yeh Yeh was the obvious first single. It's a no brainer.

I'd say 'Here It Comes Again' underperformed as a lead single and the high debut Reason got was probably off the back of Northern Star, the album dropped down the charts as if it had a brick tied to it and I think saving it after that was a nigh on impossible task.

Coming back with that after 3 years was a bit 🤨

"Here It Comes Again" definitively underperformed and pretty much de-railed the album campaign more than On the Horizon. It was released in the February lull and there wasn't even big competition that week to keep her out of the top 5 (except for Xtina's beautiful and DJ Sammy); not even being able to hit the top 5 was very bad for her at that point in time.

I'm guessing Mel might've wanted Yeh Yeh Yeh to try and steer the campaign in the right direction, but who knows? At least they didn't end up releasing Soul Boy as I've always found it very suspect that it's the one track on Reason where she doesn't have a writing credit making me believe the record label forced it on there.

Yeah both the lead singles from that album just didn't connect at all. Here It Comes Again did really turned a corner for her in a bad way, in my opinion. Something about it and the whole campaign seemed a bit meh

Then On The Horizon just cemented that she was done as a high selling artist. No wonder she pays both songs absolute dust at her gigs!

On the horizon in comparison actually did ok for her, didn't have the big comeback single hype and only charted what 6 places lower than HICA it also out peaked HICA on radio.

Whatever way you look at it HICA was a career killer, to come back after so long with something so bland was such a head scratcher. I think Melanie thought it was a 'credible' song which she seemed a bit obsessed with being seen as a credible artist at the time.

Agreed

The album opened with decent enough numbers 35,00 from memory?

Then it declined quickly because it was nowhere near the quality of NS.

I remember going to Woolworths to buy the album on the Monday with my disc man, i was 18/19 and was so disappointed with it on initial listens. It took years for the album to click with me and now i am very fond of it.

The Reason era has some of my favorite Melanie C tracks. I love all of the moody tracks such as Love To You, Living Without You, Home, Wonderland, I Love You Without Trying. I wish more of the album had been in this vein.

Agree with this the B-sides were so strong genuinely don’t get how most were passed up??

True. She even sang some of them live and spoke highly of them which is very rare for Mel-bsides-are-bsides-for-a-reason-C

I love Reason and here it comes again is a masterpiece I don't get the hate and some of the album B-sides are her best
Was an exciting time when the era began. Wasn’t a huge fan of her attitude at the time though which kind of put me off.
