15. Portugal. The Man – Woodstock

So already we have arrived at the album which did not chart in the UK Albums Chart upon its release. Portugal. The Man are an American band which had a surprise hit in 2017 with Feel It Still which went on to become a platinum-selling single globally. Woodstock is in fact the band’s 8th studio album, and despite the success of their single aforementioned, their album was unable to make any chart impression in the UK. The artwork is of a Rolls Royce on fire - a photo taken some time before by Josh Welch of The Flaming Lips, whilst in Los Angeles it turns out.

British electronic duo Goldfrapp are behind this next cover, and it’s taken from their fifth studio album Head First released in 2010. Rocket was the album’s lead single but, unlike many of their previous singles, it failed to reach the UK Top 40 Singles Chart. The artwork simply shows Alison Goldfrapp’s face up in the clouds. Concerning the design, Alison stated "I think we just wanted something really simple and that had a sort of euphoric-ness to it. A kind of slightly surreal but dreamy quality—pink clouds and [the feeling that] you can carry on forever. A sort of slight fantasy feeling."

At the start of the century a British music outfit called The Streets stamped their sound on the music scene with their debut album Original Pirate Material which reached #10 on the UK Albums Chart. Four singles were released from the album including Has It Come To This?, Let’s Push Things Forward, Don’t Mug Yourself and Weak Become Heroes all of which were UK Top 40 Singles. The album artwork depicts the south face of the Kestrel House tower block on City Road, London at night. The photo was originally taken in 1995 by German photographer Rut Blees Luxemburg.

From this era we received a plethora of hits like Why, All I Want, One Night Stand, B With Me and Roll On/This Is How We Do It. They had great success with all their singles from this album reaching the UK Top 10 Singles Chart. Remember Jack Johnson? He had a UK #1 album titled In Between Dreams which was certified 5X Platinum. The man with the guitar released his third studio album in 2005 and he released the following singles from the album; Better Together, Good People, Breakdown and Sitting, Waiting, Wishing. The album cover depicts a mango tree, referring to the Mango Tree, the studio where In Between Dreams was recorded. There is also a reference to the mango tree in the single Better Together.

Rag’n’Bone Man released his debut album Human in 2017 and is yet to follow it up with a second album. This album was a UK #1 and went on to be certified 4X Platinum. As a Brit Award winner, he’s gone onto have various hits and feature with record producer Calvin Harris also. Human was also the title of his debut single which reached a chart peak of #2 in the UK Singles Chart, and he followed it up with other singles from the album Skin, Grace and As You Are. Artist Ben Ashton was commissioned to paint the artwork, and he said that “the concept for the campaign is to slowly reveal Rory as the person behind the music, starting with his hands. I have always found painting tattooed skin challenging as the ink must appear to be under the skin and not painted on top...what fun!”

That answer from Jordan :lol: James Arthur actually came to mind first for me too.

The Mis-Teeq one I initially thought Jamelia. It took a while for me to think it might be a group as I was looking at 00s R&B genre females for a long time before I begun to think of groups.

 

The Goldfrapp thumbnail really looked like Taylor Swift to me but I knew it was wasn’t her as I’m familiar with all her artwork so I kept thinking of blonde females and eventually Goldfrapp come to mind.

I actually had the tattoo one as Post Malone - Stoney until the very last minute

oh so second half reveal tomorrow?
