November 19, 20204 yr Her last album was shaky and a choice but I really think she got her diamonds back with this one. Not sure how she reused the melody and how the lyrics are bad. Sometimes you have to make it clear for the plebs x
November 19, 20204 yr I don't think she reused the melody - it's very classic marina, it's kind of comforting and what I like most about the song. Lyrically, I feel like Marina always works best when she's looking inwards - which is why Family Jewels and Froot will always be her masterpieces for me (savages aside, despite being a boppp). With her last album and this, I find it's too heavily influenced by 'I did a Psychology and Gender studies course", but I feel the songs think they're doing something more than they are when it's been done before, and better so many times. The themes are tackled so broadly when it comes to social issues, but, when she aims to get more specific, it kind of falls apart and feels a little wishy washy. She doesn't have a kind of unique perspective someone like Lana manages, for example. I get the irony as a katy stan of all people (lol), but I'm all for silly, fun songs - but even from my favourite pop artists the songs when they try and fail to be clever and sentimental are some of my least favs. But even though I sound like I am going in, I do really like this sonically, it sounds a lot better than anywhere she's been the last year where production sounded a bit too ambiguous. The production here feels fresh, rich and is giving me promise that whenever we do get the next album, it'll be better than the last. Edited November 19, 20204 yr by 365
November 19, 20204 yr LOVE this on first listen can see me playing it alot. Reminds me of Electra Heart a bit which I love. Listening to all her last albums today forgot how much I loved her. Excited to hear more
November 19, 20204 yr You can tell when Marina really thinks she’s saying something — when usually, this song included, she isn’t. Which is fine. As long as the production and melodies are there then I don’t mind her basic takes.
November 19, 20204 yr I haven't ever really listened to a lot of Marina in the past, the only song I did like was Baby lol, but anything I did hear came across as sort of bratty and a bit "get your head out of your ass". But I like this. Its message is nothing new, and is done better by other artists, but the production is really fresh and new, for her. Her voice sounds super soothing too. She's actually a very capable singer so it's nice to hear her play with it a bit more. Not sure how much usage I'll get out of this, hopefully an accompanying album will follow the same sound. But I definitely like it.
November 19, 20204 yr I like this. It's not as strong melodically as a lot of her other songs, but I get enough out of the "I don't wanna live..." hook. I also like the production. The last album was too mechanical for me. I agree with the people saying the lyrics aren't up to much. The "campest hotel in LA then" line is clunky as hell. I find that part of the songs charm though.
November 19, 20204 yr Author But: “Burnt me at the stake, you thought I was a witch Centuries ago, now you just call me a bitch” :cheeseblock:
November 25, 20204 yr I agree that the lyrics are a bit cringe in places but songs have never really been about lyrics for me and this is an enjoyable three and a half minutes of pop. I don't think anything she does will come close to 'About Love' though, I'm gonna say that's my favourite song that's been released in all of 2020 (and I'm usually only a casual fan of hers!)
