2nd week at #1 in US, which I don’t think it was predicted to do

hey look it's my fashionably late take on this album

I think this has a similar number of highlights to 'folklore' but the album as a whole I think is a slight downgrade just because there are a few more indistinct/forgettable tracks - possible that some of them might grow on me but at the moment I think I'd say 'dorothea', 'ivy', 'cowboy like me', ''tis the damn season' and sadly 'evermore' are all pretty expendable tracks, so that's a full third of the album compared to only 2 or 3 songs on 'folklore' (I don't dislike any of those songs as much as 'betty' but with that song I still at least respect it even if it's musically not for me). I wouldn't say there's a huge gap in quality between the two albums though which is in itself a pretty good achievement considering how close together they were released!

Seems to be an unpopular opinion but I think she picked the correct song to be the lead single again - the instrumentation on 'willow' just feels so instantly warm and fuzzy for lack of better words <3 and the whole song just has such an ~enchanting~ quality to it. Don't love it quite as much as 'cardigan' but I think I'd say it is my 2nd favourite song from the 'folklore'/'evermore' eras combined. Not me being such a mainstream whore xx My other biggest highlights are 'marjorie' (this is the 'epiphany' of this album being just too good for general public plebs isn't it ), 'tolerate it', 'gold rush' (these two along with 'willow' having my favourite instrumentals on the album) and 'long story short' (that one being some much needed energy on the album immediately following 2 of its least essential tracks). 'closure' felt a little out of place but I do appreciate the experimentation on it and it turned out pretty good imo although I can see why it's divisive! 'champagne problems' a pretty lovely song, not getting huge standout vibes from it as a lot of other people are but it is just in my top half of the album.

I had no idea what to expect from 'no body, no crime', I was excited for a Taylor/HAIM collab but that excitement was a bit dampened by learning that HAIM are barely on it and it was being compared to 'Before He Cheats' which I really don't like at all. The song turned out to be... ok ~ might be a grower - I don't think it helps that a lot of its appeal is coming from the lyrics and I am pretty bad at paying attention to lyrics especially when listening through full albums, I'll try and pay more attention on a relisten  'coney island' sounded pretty much exactly as I expected it to (i.e. like a The National song with Taylor singing on it) which isn't a bad thing.

First listen ranking:

1 willow

2 marjorie

3 tolerate it

4 gold rush (these last two are fairly interchangeable, could easily swap over with another listen)

5 long story short

6 closure

7 champagne problems

8 happiness

9 coney island

10 no body, no crime

11 'tis the damn season

12 evermore

13 cowboy like me

14 ivy

15 dorothea

Looking forward to hearing the other 2 tracks as 'the lakes' ended up being better than half the songs on the main tracklist of 'folklore'.

#1 in the mids with a 1k lead!

Hopefully it can hold on and get a 2nd week, think it’s gonna be close with both little mix and Harry stans fighting to go #1 for the first time :kink:

I think she’s gonna make it - she seems to be increasing her lead. Fingers crossed. Although I also like LM & I’ll be please if little mix go to number one in the singles.

I hope this does go back to #1 this week even if probably will be with the lowest sales for a #1 album ever lel

BTW this album is really full of growers - mostly it's just the songs I already loved that have clicked with me even more (particularly 'marjorie' and 'tolerate it', but also 'gold rush' and 'long story short' have been growing on me more too, I feel like the latter is this album's 'august' in terms of having the stickiest hook) but I've also really got into 'no body, no crime' now after initially not entirely getting it. Keeps reminding me of 'Secret' by The Pierces every time I hear it ~

yeah same here, I think she's got this now! :cheer: another negative record set to be broken tho in the past month, who's doing it like my fave :cheeseblock:

And I'm so here for Sweet Melody at 1 <3

also looking pretty likely rn that champagne problems is going to get another week top 40  maybe folklore top 10 too!

Long story short is absolutely amazing - I love it - it does have an awesome hook. Probably one of my favourites from both albums. It would be interesting to have to rate the songs from both albums...

still ofc loving and spamming this! CP is by far my favourite on the album, the first time since probs 1989 that I've had a clear fave on an album!! that top 3 is v. secure as well and I adore the top 6. I for sure prefer folklore by miles tho (which has solidified itself as my favourite album ever), gonna do a ranking of the two albums combined soon! However this album is still so great, nothing I don't love bar closure but there's about another 4/5 tracks that I'm not rushing out of my way to listen to anymore aha! I think overall this is 5th/6th for me in her discography (neck and neck with Red, evermore is far better as an album itself & flows way better as Red has too much filler but the first 5 songs of Red...)

'tolerate it' erasure

(My ranking of the album is actually shockingly similar to yours, apart from 'closure' being a lot higher and 'champagne problems' lower xx I'd say since the original ranking I posted, since which I've heard every song at least one more time, I'd now possibly move 'tolerate it' ahead of 'marjorie', would push 'no body, no crime' up to #7 and would swap over 'ivy' and 'dorothea', the rest still seems about right. Not heard the bonus tracks yet ofc)

'It's Time To Go' is such an apt song title to be near the top of the iTunes chart this week anyway!

I just listened to it and it isn't about Trump, alas!

#1 in the album chart again yasss!!! evermore's 2nd week at #1 and fourth week top 2 & is Taylor's 2nd album now to spend more than one week at 1!

also avoided achieving the lowest album sales ever for #1 by 13 copies, screaming at it being 13!!

13 copies ! Wow lol. What’s got the record for the lowest number one?

But who cares, a number one is a number one !!

What are the chances of it getting another number one next week!??
