After stints in prison Digga D came back with a different style that what he was known for before. His music since release has been much less gritty and more Americanised since he became one of the first artists to receive a 'Criminal Behaviour Order' that gives the police creative control to censor any of his lyrics and visuals they find inappropriate. Since then his music has became much more polished and safer with frequent censored lines ('Chyna' & 'Niner' both get obvious edits). While I think its a terrible thing for musical expression and that the police should in now way have this power over his career, I think it's possible it's actually made his music better. It's forced him to be more clever and creative with his references. A bit like what is often said about Hollywood's Hays Code in the 'golden' age of cinema.

I was listening to this album on the bus to-and-from my job interview (and when I found out I got the interview) for teh jobI got this year just before lockdown so I can't hear anything from it without thinking about work which does put a slight downer on it (still the only time I've actually been to the office though) :lol: It's one of those songs that sounds upbeat until you listen to the lyrics and realise that the first verse is Watsky talking to a girlfriend who tells him she wants to end her own life and the 2nd verse is about his worries and anxieties but in the end the hopefulness of the song does shine through even if he says he is down so often that 'his bes friend is the floor'.

This ended up being the only real hit from the Romance album which was a shame as there was plenty of tracks I loved more but with the DaBaby feature this did feel like the saftest bet. The video is fun and got too much stick, Camila does 'overact' a bit in her vids that comes across a bit cringy but she is very expressive and always shows a lot of personality. It managed to gain a few weeks near the top of my charts before the 2020 songs began to take a hold.

The BBK tracks on each artist's respective albums where they feature a bunch of members from the group are always standouts and this collaboration didn't dissapoint. None of the verses are anything where the hardest anyone's ever spit but the beat is so good it improves any verse tenfold. Jme would probably be the highlight if I was to chose, the 'wear them out' line was particularly fun. I didn't end up going back to this one too much.

It really did just feel like the rejects from the earlier album apart from his track which feels so original and feels like a mini mystery play. Haim are essentially back-up vocalists but Danielle's small line is probably my favourite moment.

A collaboration between AJ & Mabel was something that really excited before this was released but in the end I found this one quite disappointing. I really liked it for a couple of weeks but it got boring really quickly which was only accentuated by it's overexposure. I find it a bit hard to listen to now.

One of the best UK rap songs of the year comes from Central Cee with his debut chart hit, Loading. It's looking to re-peak this week so is hopefully set for a good 2021. The best thing about this song is the production, it sounds so unique amongst this year's releases and elevates it above other similar efforts. The chorus is also one of the catchiest of the year. I've probably ranked this too low but it's been a bit over-shaddowed in my chart due to the Ariana & Little Mix albums. Big shout out to HARGO Production who deserve a lot of the credit for this banger.

While 3 of my 2020 #1's have missed my top 100 (all holdovers from 2019), this is the first proper 2020 #1 to drop out my chart. This was of course a charity release from lockdown 1 when they were ten a penny in the charts. Of course it was a new song from Ari so of course it shot to the top of my charts but it couldn't hold up for me at all. The main reason for this unfortunately is because of it's other artist. Bieber's voice is just too weak compared for this song which is only intensified by placing it next to Ari's heavenly tones. I guess the song is already now best remembered for confirming the Ari & Dalton relationship to the world. Musically the song is a ballad that reminds me of Little Mix's 'FU' at times.

The tracks from 'Placement' have been given so much short shrift in my chart due to the extraordinarily busy time it was released. This was my equal 68th most played track of 2020 according to Last.FM (behind all the tracks from the Ari, LM & BP albums) and to finish almost double that position in my points chart just isn't very representative of my actual feelings on this track. This didn't hit me that much initially but just grew on me so much. There's only one verse here but that's ok when the chorus is this good. The verse is also great too with some really quotable lines and nice contradictions. Sorry Mist, Megan, Blackpink & Jason but this is the best Savage song of 2020. Watsky has one more entry this year which will be much higher.

The first of three from folklore is 'Betty'. A beautiful, nostalgic track about young love. Sang from the perspective from a teenager called James, who wants to win the love of his girlfriend back and he hurt her by having a 'summer fling' with someone else. This feels like one of the songs where the 'folk' elements are more obvious with the harmonica in the background being a nice little touch that really elevates my enjoyment of the track. The outro is surprisingly exhilarating and ends on the song on such a high that makes you want to rewind and listen all over again.

This is the most unfairly derided songs of the year. It took a while to grow on me but it really won me over at around the time the visualiser with the Gonzales twins was released. Its funny how all the songs that blew up from Pop's posthumous that dominated 2020 were away from the drill style that gained him his popularity and fame. This is R&B track where Pop even gets to show us a bit of his singing, a world away from Dior. I think one of the things people didn't like about this song was Tjay's divisive squeaky voice but for some reason, I think it works well on this track when accompanied by Pop's lower tones. I find it interesting with how polished it now sounds, that when this was originally recorded, it had a completely different beat and Smoke only contacted Beat Menace to create a new instrumental weeks before his tragic murder.

Kicking off my top 75 for the 2nd year in a row is Taylor Swift. But whereas in 2019 where this where we said goodbye to her, this year she still has one more entry to appear. For me, this was the strongest single she had released since she kicked of the Reputation era with 'LWYMMD' back in 2017. While I adored the 'Reputation' & 'Lover' albums, their best tracks were never the singles. Like a lot of 'folklore' there is just something about this song that just makes me feel warm and while Taylor has killed it with some pure 'pop' songs over the last few years, this more chilled and tender vibe is really working for her.

The first of (RTJ)4 Run The Jewels entries this year. This is one that really makes you exclaim 'oh shit' the first time you hear it. As soon as Pharrell's done this opening and you know what the chorus is, you know you're hearing something important. With additional vocals from Zack De La Rocha from Rage Against The Machine, you already know it's going to be political but this is really one of most effective takedowns of the US government I've heard in the Trump era, and I've heard plenty. After some very direct and blunt lyrics by Pharrel & Killer Mike, El-P's verse is slightly more poetic and abstract but then he ends on some more hard-hitting shots to. This song is one of those everyone should listen to.

Even from when you just first see the featured artists on this song, it feels like an odd assortion and then you hear the multiple samples ranging from Ralphi Rosariom Ultra Nate & Queen Latifah and you imagine this song must be a mess. And while it does feel a little all over the place, it's staggering just how well everything comes together. Ty has always seemed to find away to feature on a bunch of hit songs but this is the first of his own work to make my chart and ironically it's the guests who steal the track. Kanye's verse is fun even if some of the lyrics are a bit dodgy and FKA Twigs sounds beautiful. I'm sure nobody would be disappointed if we got a full version of just her parts. This is somehow the 5th year straight for Ty in my EOY charts.

The first of 5 tracks from 'The Album' is Crazy Over You. This is a track from Blackpink that is fully in English and it's nice to fully understand everything they're talking about. It's probably why it was the album track that stood-out for me most from my first listen. As you can see from my signature, Jisoo is my bias in Blackpink and I wish she got more lines in this song. Jisoo singing in English is always my favourite parts so where she does get the opportunity here, she shines the brightest.

I'm not too surprised Kudi left this one of his album because his part is pretty forgettable. The reason to listen to this is Eminem's verse that is one of his strongest in years. He's still doing his corny-joke schtick but they're landing here in a way that haven't always in the last few albums. He references a lot of what was happening in the current time in 2020 with bars about Covid & BLM perfectly summing the mood and frustrations of a nation. I'm not sure where that went on 'Gnat' from MTBMB: Side B where the Covid references are awful and feel so forced. I do always enjoy a nice 5 minute+ track with no hook though that gives the artists chance to breathe.

Giving 'betty' a listen since you mentioned it in my chart, sounding quite nice although not grabbing me completely. No Body No Crime was probably my favourite I've heard from Evermore though!

 

Ego Death was one of the better rap songs to come out of America this year, on first listen Mood Swings was my favourite of the Pop Smoke songs but certainly has some less-than-savoury lyrics in it. Loading is one of the better rap songs from last year as well.
