Hoping that Confetti is the album that overtook Zayn and is back in the top 10.

I find it mad how Zayn nosedived for album 2, but Harry Styles has blown up!

Harry was always the biggest star from the group from day 1 so he had a strong starting point and lots of good will anyway. Zayn did too and he started well but I think the material let him down for album 2. I wrote up this post in the 1D forum the other day explaining why Zayn's not quite the big name he once was:

The interest seemed to evaporate quickly after Dusk Till Dawn. Let Me did okay but releasing another 78 singles from Icarus Falls naturally brought diminishing returns (it would for any artist), but it didn't help that none of them caught on and the album was launched in Christmas week, the toughest sales week of the year, with only a minor top 20 hit from months back to sell it. His aversion to promotion doesn't help and nothing's really changed since then, his most recent hit is now over three years old.

Being in 1D isn't an immediate help either - Liam's album wasn't exactly a runaway success either thanks to constant delays and ultimately releasing it a year and a half after Familiar, his last notable hit as a lead. Louis hasn't had any single success from his album, it had a strong first week thanks to Louis having more of a fanbase than any of them except Harry but dropped away quickly. Only Niall and Harry really have interest from the general public at this point because they've kept the momentum going with their single and album releases, well-timed promotion and consistent high quality of music.

(I've not heard this album yet so I'll report back on that but neither of the singles really sounded like hits to me, even if he could still get any real level of support - that doesn't mean either are bad songs though, Vibez is a good track and I think I quite liked Better)

Harry didn't let the momentum slip like this - Fine Line has been the best marketed album campaign I've seen in ages! Marketing wise, Fine Line and Icarus Falls were absolute words apart, and that's before you look at the material being much more commercially friendly for Harry.

His music isn't that interesting, but dunno maybe it's just me. Harry has much more going on and variation in his output.

Beyond a handful of songs it doesn't appeal to me much either :( and that's coming from a massive One Direction fan...! I like that he's settled into a sound he's comfortable with but it's just not my cup of tea on the whole.

Zayn is more vocally impressive, but I feel like he has a lot of talent that is held back because of his own anxieties. Harry didn't have the best voice in the group (probably 2, tied w/Liam?) but he has such a showmanship and charisma about him whereas Zayn is as exciting as a self service checkout.

To me Zayn is just not an artist. He is lazy, with bad personality, canceled over 4 events he had booked. Not a professional. Literally, how can we compare a professional artist like Harry Styles to the guy who is canceling everything and pretends it is a normal thing? Zayn had hype from breaking up One Direction and he could be the biggest star from 1D but he just missed it all. "He" is the only reason why his career is where it is now. Not his label fault that the guy just don't want to work.

I like to see Harry's Fine Line in its 58th week outselling Zayn's new album in its debut week.

Feel like this is a *tad* harsh, considering Zayn suffers with anxiety and doesn't like to promote. If Zayn himself was complaining about success, then it'd be a different story, but I feel like this is unnecessarily harsh. I'm not the biggest Zayn fan (in fact, I don't like him at all lol) but he struggles w/promotion due to being in the public eye and how people treated him as a POC in 1D.

I don't think it was ever anything to do with him being a POC, he just wasn't enjoying One Direction for a variety of reasons (including his anxiety)

Nobody's Listening

he called it xo

Barry Gibb coming for You Me At Six :drama: Really hope they hold on it’s such an incredible album.
On another note, Anne-Marie's looking very comfortable for #2 at this point and Ari's looking good for #3 too, Little Mix sold just over 100 less yesterday so the gap's widened a little even though it's still not huge. At this rate, Laroi's going to knock Ed out of the top 5 (Tawdry found rejoicing :kink:).

I really don’t think him being a POC has anything to do with him leaving 1D. He garnered incredible adulation whilst in the band for his handsome looks and enigmatic personality.

I'll live with it if it just stays far away from #1.

I must be really out of touch because I had to look up what POC stood for  but yeah I agree that had absolutely nothing to do with Zayn's reasons for leaving 1D! He would definitely be more successful if he actively promoted the way that the other 1D boys do but I completely get that he suffers from anxiety issues which prevents him from doing that. I doubt he's overly concerned about chart positions though so as long as he's creating music that makes him happy (and makes his fans happy) then it's fine. I'm pretty hit and miss with him, I do quite like some of his stuff but the new album isn't really doing anything for me.

Pirates of Caribbean came to mind
