January 26, 20214 yr 'No Time To Die' is a decent song but not one of Billie's best imo so it's a shame it's her only UK #1 to date. 'Head & Heart' or 'Blinding Lights' would probably be my favourite #1 of 2020. Edited January 26, 20214 yr by Dot Branning

Released in 1984, Last Christmas / Everything She Wants only managed to make #2, spending five weeks there behind Band Aid each and every week. Of course, both songs went on to solidify themselves as Christmas classics, but though Band Aid won the battle, Wham! have most certainly won the war. Taking on an element of poignancy after George Michael's unfortunate death on Christmas Day 2016, Last Christmas has moved comfortably into being the second biggest Christmas song each year, but thanks to a close battle and a fan download rally, Last Christmas finally managed the #1 spot - 36 years after its release, a record! It then shattered the record for biggest drop from #1, falling straight out of the chart with the Christmas season firmly over, but it hardly matters - finally, Last Christmas has a #1 peak to its name. They were unashamedly pop, to the point of padding the front of their trousers for television appearances. At the heart, however, was a string of catchy singalong singles written by George Michael (born Georgios Kyrriacos Panayiotou in London to a Greek restauranting family). Michael met Wham!'s other half, Andrew Ridgeley, at school in the London suburb of Bushey, and in 1979 they started performing together as part of the ska-based band the Executive. When that group dissolved, they wrote songs, made demos, and rushed into a recording contract with the equally eager independent label Innervision, scoring an instant hit with "Wham Rap!" (they thought that "wham" was the sound they made when Michael and Ridgeley performed together). In order to move to a recording contract with Sony label Epic, Wham! was forced to walk away from most of the royalties from their debut album, Fantastic. None of that mattered when their 1984 single, "Wake Me up Before You Go Go," became a worldwide hit, accompanied by a video of the pair cavorting in their sportswear. Almost immediately, George Michael started thinking of a solo career, and released "Careless Whisper," issued in the U.S. as George Michael of Wham! The duo embarked on a much-publicized trip to China and enjoyed considerable success in America. Wham!'s end came rather suddenly, in 1985, reputedly when the group's manager, Simon Napier-Bell (later to manage Take That), decided to sell a share of his management to a South African entertainment conglomerate. Supposedly, as part of a stand against South African politics, George Michael immediately announced Wham!'s breakup. They gave their farewell performance before a sold-out audience of 72,000 fans at London's Wembley Stadium. George Michael comfortably stepped straight into his own highly successful solo performing and recording career. Andrew Ridgeley's post Wham! album, Son of Albert, produced the Top 60 U.K. hit, "Shake." - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 1982 03 Young Guns (Go For It) -1- 1983 08 Wham Rap! January 27, 20214 yr I've always found 'Last Christmas' over-rated, maybe because it's so over-played every Christmas.
January 27, 20214 yr Last Christmas was released the year I was born so it going to #1 was a big moment for me. It is of course overplayed but is beautifully written and sung, and there's a wistful simplicity about it which I think people really connect to at Christmas. I'm glad it's done well here.
January 27, 20214 yr Last Christmas has really crept up in my affections over the years as has my love for George Michael and his music. It's a shame it didn't manage top 3 here but at least it's an official #1 now. :D
January 27, 20214 yr Author 05 | 321 points SAINt JHN Roses Non-album single Original version from Collection One Released: 13th September 2019 Label: Godd Complexx / HITCO American-Guyanese rapper SAINt JHN very nearly scored a top 40 hit alongside Beyoncé on the track BROWN SKIN GIRL in 2019, but it ultimately finished at #42. I'm not sure anyone would quite have expected the level of success his next chart hit would get, though perhaps that's in part down to the backstory of Roses. The original version of the song came out in 2016 and had little impact. In 2019, a new remix was released and pushed. Kazakh producer Imanbek was behind the remix, and it elevated Roses into a dance hit with pitched-up vocals, and as 2020 arrived, the remix gained a lot of traction. It climbed to #1, initially poised to take over when Blinding Lights (first) hit ACR but it actually nabbed the #1 a week earlier, earning its status as a genuine chart-topper before a "fake" second week. SAINt JHN has yet to score another hit and Imanbek still hasn't had one credited to his name, so perhaps Roses was just a perfect storm for both artists? The Guyanese-American singer born Carlos St. John uses music to pursue a deeper understanding of himself and the world that surrounds him. “I’m always looking past the surface, I’m always looking for a real experience. The only thing I’m looking to do is fall in love,” he explained to Apple Music. As his songs demonstrate, that love can come through food, music, relationships, or some other connection. The search for that fleeting feeling is the guiding philosophy that sparks SAINt JHN’s artistry. Ghetto Lenny’s Love Songs, released in 2019, is playful and mysterious, a post-trap, melody-heavy collection of ideas that finds him experimenting with an array of emotions, styles, and flows. The album reveals just enough about his desires and interests to leave listeners wanting more. His 2016 hit, “Roses,” took on a second life in 2020 after Imanbek gave the downtempo jam a dance-floor-focused remix; the song eventually peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard charts, earning SAINt JHN a gold record. The accolades are nice, but the rapper is looking for something more…and something less. “No matter what you do, if you tell a simple truth,” he said to Apple Music, “it can’t be bad, because it’s true.” Simple or not, SAINt JHN’s truths have become resonant declarations worldwide. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2019 42 BROWN SKIN GIRL (Beyoncé, SAINt JHN, Wizkid & Blue Ivy Carter) -OST- 2020 01 Roses -NAS- MILLIONAIRE 1 x #1 | 1 x Top 5 | 1 x Top 10 | 1 x Top 20 | 1 x Top 40 | 2 x Top 100 Social Media SAINt JHN http://i.imgur.com/1SERq1f.png

The momentum continued to build in 2020 when Lonely became his first top 5 hit, but it was Head & Heart that truly cemented Joel's place in music right now. Assisted by MNEK, Head & Heart became an instant top 20 hit, by far Joel's highest debut, and just two weeks later it hit the #1 spot, becoming both Joel and MNEK's first #1 hit. Head & Heart is often dubbed the sound of lockdown, even though it was released as restrictions were being lifted somewhat in the UK...! There's no arguing that it's one of the sounds of the summer though, and as soon as parties and raves are back on, Head & Heart is surely featuring on every single playlist. Following several singles released throughout the second half of the 2010s, he hit big in 2019 with a cover of Monsta Boy's "Sorry." Corry grew up during the height of the U.K. garage explosion, and started to DJ when he was 13. Professionally active as the owner of a personal training business as well as a gym and leisure wear company, he first caught the public's eye when he starred in the reality show Geordie Shore. Corry released his first two dance singles, "Back Again" and "Light It Up," in 2015. He began hosting a specialty show on KISS FM in 2017, and holds down summer residencies in Ibiza, Zante, Ayia Napa, and several other clubbing hot spots. In 2019, he released a cover of Monsta Boy's 2000 U.K. garage hit "Sorry (I Didn't Know)," retitled "Sorry" and featuring vocalist Hayley May. After being featured on the British reality TV series Love Island, the song reached the Top Ten in the United Kingdom, Scotland, and Ireland. Two more singles, "Lonely" and "Head & Heart," arrived in 2020 and reached the Top Five of the U.K. singles chart. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History Joel Corry 2019 06 Sorry -NAS- 2020 04 Lonely -NAS- 2020 01 Head & Heart (feat. January 28, 20214 yr How have I only just realised that Joel Corry was on Geordie Shore??? I even watched all of the earlier series. He looks so much better in the H&H video than he did on Geordie Shore (going by a clip I've just watched on YouTube :kink:).

January 29, 20214 yr Author 03 | 376 points Mariah Carey All I Want For Christmas Is You 1st single from Merry Christmas Released: 1994 Label: Sony Music Entertainment The top 3 songs were pretty clear cut from the get-go, and it's the Queen of Christmas herself that's the first to drop of the three. Mariah Carey had two chart-toppers to her name before 2020, both of which were cover versions. Perennial classic All I Want for Christmas Is You never made it higher than #2, initially blocked by East 17's Stay Another Day upon release in 1994, before reaching its #2 peak again in 2017, 2018 and 2019, blocked by Ed Sheeran, Ava Max and Alexa Goulding respectively. It was starting to seem like Mariah might never quite make it, especially as 2019's dates fell pretty much perfectly. However, with 2020 being the mess that it was, people started Christmas sooner, and the Christmas chart invasion was bigger than ever. Mariah reached #1 at last in December and spent two weeks at the top, finally clinching her first ever original #1 in the UK. Now us Mariah fans can rest easy each year and not sit on edge wondering whether she'll finally make #1...! What else did she need to say? Thirty-plus years in the business, more No. 1 singles than any solo artist in history (and second overall only to The Beatles), more writing and production credits on those singles than any other female composer—Carey is one of the few artists who might legitimately be beyond apology, a diva incarnate whose songs bridge the confessional intimacy of singer-songwriters with the mass appeal of pop. Yeah, she had some knocks along the way. Everyone does. But few take them in stride, let alone with such style. Born in Long Island in 1969 or 1970 (she once quipped that she doesn’t acknowledge time), Carey grew up on the classics: Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight. She moved to New York City after high school, cobbling together jobs while working on demos with then-collaborator Ben Margulies at the back of Margulies’ father’s cabinet factory. Her biggest tracks—from the early, dance- and gospel-influenced “Someday” and “Dreamlover” to the club leanings of “Fantasy” and “Honey” and ballads such as “Forever” and “Always Be My Baby”—stand like mile markers in the culture, capturing a feeling of sweetness and euphoria that straddles pop, hip-hop, and R&B without slotting neatly into any of them. Meanwhile, her melismatic style—a technique that entails singing a single syllable with a long run of notes—redefined our sense of what pop vocals sound like. It's doing something with it that you would expect to just be quite weird and not work but somehow creating magic. :magic:
