In anticipation of the release of their new film"Better Man", superstar Robbie Williams and director Michael Gracey climbed the famous steps of Cannes together. The film, which is already shaping up to be a major event in the film industry, is a musical biopic based on the life of the famous British singer Robbie Williams. It was directed and co-written by the talented Australian director Michael Gracey, well known for his work on"The Greatest Showman".

The film "Better Man" chronicles the rise, fall and resurrection of Robbie Williams, one of the UK's best-selling artists of all time. Gracey promises to shed new light on the ups and downs of fame, inspired by Williams' life and his perception of himself. The film will be filled with reimagined versions of Williams' musical hits and iconic performances, with spectacular numbers and stunning visual effects created by the Oscar-winning team at Weta FX (Avatar, Lord of the Rings Trilogy)

Robbie Williams will share the screen with a talented cast, including Jonno Davies(Hunters, Kingsman: Secret Service) and BAFTA winner Steve Pemberton (Inside No. 9, Killing Eve).

Robbie Williams & ‘The Greatest Showman’ Director Michael Gracey Talk Singer’s Epic Biopic ‘Better Man’ & Why He Would Be Happy To Reunite With Take That: “We Have These Universal Strings That Pull Us Back Together” — Cannes Studio

Brit pop superstar Robbie Williams and The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey were in Cannes this week to talk about their upcoming large-scale feature film Better Man based on the singer’s life. The musical project, which is being shopped to buyers here in Cannes through Rocket Science and CAA Media Finance, will look into the experiences that shaped Williams’ life, both on and off stage and, unusually, will be portrayed by a CGI monkey in the film.

Williams, who was in town to promote the film to buyers with Gracey, told Deadline that his relationship with Gracey goes back to when the director was in the development stage of making musical epic The Greatest Showman. “Robbie helped me out massively on The Greatest Showman,” said Gracey. “There was a time when music was being called into question and as Robbie was one of Hugh [Jackman’s] main references for what it was to be a great showman, I went round on a Sunday and played Robbie the music and sort of told him the story and took him through it.” Williams quipped, “I thought he was pitching me to be the lead in the film all the way through it. He was playing me the music, told me the whole story and showed me the storyboards and in my head I’m going ‘Yeah, I’ll do it.’” While that film ultimately didn’t lead to a major collaboration between the two, it’s come full circle with Better Man.

“I didn’t want Robbie for that film but as time went on and he told me all of these amazing stories, I realized that Rob is naturally an amazing storyteller,” Gracey said. “And whenever we would talk he would ask questions about my life, I’d ask questions about his life and when he spoke, these amazing stories just felt so heartfelt and original and unexpected and I thought they would make for a great film.”

While the duo admitted they weren’t supposed to yet explain the full reason behind featuring a CGI monkey as playing Williams despite people in the film industry knowing this fact – “you want something like this to be reveal,” said Gracey – they did give Deadline a snippet of their rational behind the decision. “There was a conceit at one point which was how we could frame the film in an original way,” said Gracey. “You know, there’s been great biopics and we wanted to come at it in a sort of way that didn’t just take the existing route and so it was through a series of conversations that we wanted to lense it not how we see Robbie but how he sees himself.”

Williams originally became a pop star through being part of the hugely successful UK band Take That before launching a strong solo career that included his signature hit Angels as well as Millenium and, interestingly, Take That (whose current members are Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald) have their own feature film project Greatest Days (starring Aisling Bea, Jayde Adams and Marc Wootton) which is being launched in the UK on June 16.

When pressed about his knowledge of that very different project (Greatest Days is more of a Mamma Mia style musical about the fans of boy bands), Williams admitted that while he hasn’t seen the film, he was involved on the production of the stage show The Band, on which the film is based. “I’ve seen the trailer but I haven’t seen the film yet but I’m sure it’s going to be amazing,” said Williams.

Take That recently headlined King Charles III’s coronation concert earlier this month and when asked if he would ever reunite with the band, Williams said: “Yeah, I bet I will, yeah. Nothing on the horizon but we have these universal strings that pull us back together all the way through our lives and I would be very happy to do something with the boys again but I don’t know when that’s going to be.”

My interest in the film is really notched up because MG said the film is from how Robbie sees himself, not how his fans see him.

How intriguing is that?

And although he has touched on the Greatest Showman thing before in interviews -who knew how much influence he had?

Loved-up: Robbie Williams and wife Ayda Field dressed to impress on Tuesday evening as they arrived at the Chopard Art party during Cannes Film Festival

Robbie Williams and wife Ayda Field dressed to impress on Tuesday evening as they arrived at the Chopard Art party during Cannes Film Festival. The singer, 49, looked dapper in a black double breasted blazer which he teamed with coordinated wide legged trousers and smart slip of shoes. Ayda cut a glamorous figure in a stunning embellished blue gown which boasted long sleeves and a pretty patterned detailing. The TV personality added inches to her frame in a pair of towering silver metallic heels and accessorised with a pair of small earrings. She styled her long dark tresses in a neat high ponytail leaving her fringe to frame her face.

It comes after the couple admitted they barely ever have sex last month. The former Take That singer blamed his lack of libido on coming off testosterone injections, which had been worsening his depression. In a joint interview, the pair insisted they're 'on the same page' when it comes to intimacy and are content with their lack of bedroom activity. Robbie told The Sun: 'Everyone knows there is no sex after marriage. That's just the way it is. I was on testosterone for a while but, because I'm an addict, that had to stop. I got these massive square shoulders and started to look like a doorman. It wasn't a good look. 'But the sex we had when I was on testosterone was incredible; it was all the time. We were insatiable. It goes to show how into each other we really are, though, because when I was on it, we couldn't take our hands off each other. 'I miss that. That was a fun period. Sometimes now, though, Ayda will turn to me on the sofa and say, "We should do sex," and I'm sitting there eating a tangerine and just sort of shrug. So, ya know, sometimes we try.' The actress, who married her popstar partner in 2010, concluded: 'Intimacy is the important, meaningful side of love. We're happy.'

I did not know about the GS connection , Rob is always so humble about that kind of stuff

I know what you mean about the movie Laura from Robs point of view. If I remember correctly Nobody Someday was very much from Rob's point of view as he saw himself , I think that why why I loved that documentary so I am really looking forward to this movie if it's in a similar vein & with the addition of all the stuff that has happened to him since. He has an amazing life really.

So many people on social media are worried about Rob's sex life

Yes, interesting . I wonder if Rob will help Michael Gracey do some promo on this in the coming months . The film is very much the baby of MG with Rob's rise to fame being the subject matter.

I wonder if the movie will be in the cinemas 2023. I don't see that he has time for promotion.

According to IMDb release date Sept 28th in Germany so I am assuming it will be in cinemas shortly afterwards . Rob is in Singapore on Sept 17th but nothing then until OCT 18th in Abu Dhabi so I guess he will make an appearance in Germany which is usually his favourite place to launch new projects
