Thank you to everyone who entered the sixth Chart Forum quiz in the current series - Song Title Anagrams!!

Animation_of_the_anagram_'Programmed_animation_=_In_time,_anagrams_do_romp!'.gif

We have 17 participants:

chrissmith276, adrianreavill83, Mangø, Bjork, Dexton, Riser, Ansel, coi, PeteFromLeeds, CJK, Jade, LewisGT, paulgilb, JulianT, Mack, rio309, awardinary

Now for the UNIQUELY EXTRA DOSS -> EQUINOX DAY RESULTS!

(‘Q’ and ‘X’ are the only letters that didn’t appear in any of my anagrams, so I got them in here. Technically the equinox was yesterday, but I digress…)

First a few summary stats:

Total scores are out of 100 – the average was just over 48.

There were 269 correct guesses for the 30 anagrams between the 17 of you.

9 people correctly guessed at least part of the theme and/or the order.

One anagram was correctly guessed by all 17 people.

As for the least correctly guessed anagram(s), let’s wait and see...

First two answers on the way!

1. SET MINI CHART POSTS

-> STEP INTO CHRISTMAS - Elton John

Peak #8 (2019, 2021) | Letters 17 | Guessed by 8

3 points

chrissmith276, Mangø, Bjork, Dexton, Jade, LewisGT, JulianT, Mack

0.5 points

PeteFromLeeds [stop Christmas Tine] (close enough for half a point)

0 points

Riser [Drake - Laugh Now Cry Later]

First up is a highly appropriate anagram for Buzzjack – setting mini chart posts is what many of us do :D The answer is the only song in the quiz which originally charted before 1993 (which I set as the cut-off since it’s the year I started following the charts), but it is now of course a staple of the annual Christmas invasion and climbed to its number eight peak in the weeks after each of the last two Christmas Days.

2. PRESIDENT HEALS HAIRDO

-> PRAISE THE LORD (DA SHINE) – A$AP Rocky (feat. Skepta)

Peak #18 (2018) | Letters 20 | Guessed by 8

Riser [Madonna - This Used To Be My Playground]

On the other hand, the less said about some of these anagrams the better. The track is a decent earworm though and spent 11 weeks between #18 and #23 without climbing higher. I didn’t deduct any points for leaving out the featured artists, so provided you put A$AP Rocky (with a ‘$’ or an ‘S’), you got the 1 point for the artist here.

Riser [Drake - Toosie Slide]

Here’s a proper Countdown conundrum – the answer is J.Hud’s only Top 30 hit as lead artist, which knocked on the door of the Top 10 but twice landed a place short.

4. RINSED THE HOT TRACK

-> CHEERS (DRINK TO THAT) - Rihanna

Riser [Katy Perry - Dark Horse]

One of the more apt anagrams in the quiz – this was one of 14 songs with which Rihanna appeared in the Top 40 during 2011.

5. ONE ENGINE'S CUBE

-> SINCE U BEEN GONE - Kelly Clarkson

Peak #5 (2005) | Letters 14 | Guessed by 8

3 points

chrissmith276, Mangø, Bjork, Dexton, Ansel, coi, JulianT, Mack

Riser [Madonna - Borderline], PeteFromLeeds [Genius ???]

This anagram reminds me of one my favourite sequences of The Simpsons which culminates in Mr. Burns asking: "is it about my cube?" Well anyway, the grammatically incorrect (even in text-speak) Since U Been Gone kickstarted Kelly’s most commercially successful era with an aesthetically pleasing 5-6-7-6-5 opening run. It’s also one of a few songs to have borrowed a little from The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps.

6. LATE DISCO TOWN

-> CLINT EASTWOOD - Gorillaz

Peak #4 (2001) | Letters 13 | Guessed by 7

Riser [Madonna - This Used To Be My Playground], PeteFromLeeds [Elastic DoTown], rio309 [i Want To Closed]

The first hit for the animated band, this was bouncing around the lower half of the Top 6 exactly 20 years ago. Controversially, I still prefer the Ed Case / Sweetie Irie “refix” which got most of the airplay at the time.

These results so far make it look like I did really well but wait until we get halfway through

7. IF I ALARM

-> FAMILIAR - Liam Payne & J Balvin

Peak #14 (2018) | Letters 8 | Guessed by 14

LewisGT, rio309 [Familiar - Liam Payne]

2 points (all 2 point answers are without an artist, unless stated)

paulgilb [Familiar - J Hus], Mack

0 points

Riser [Ella Eyre feat. Anne-Marie - If I Go Alarm (The Mashup)]

Still the most recent Top 40 hit as lead artist for the former 1D member – although J Balvin is the joint lead, so I deducted half a point if you left him out.

8. OPERATE SKIS

-> STRIKE A POSE - Young T & Bugsey (feat. Aitch)

Peak #9 (2019) | Letters 11 | Guessed by 6

Riser [Madonna - Like A Prayer] (I might have given half a point for Vogue  ), PeteFromLeeds [skip A Stereo], rio309 [Take Is Soper]

The tune that introduced most of us to Young T & Bugsey (and Aitch) took a slow climb from #30 to the Top 10.

Thought I’d throw in an easy anagram  inevitably, this was the one answer where everyone got the title correct, and most of you also knew it was a song by Ne-Yo.

10. EAR AND COMB

The six-time Buzzjack ROTD winner - what is there left to say about it?

Got all of those four in a rather satisfying run, Strike A Pose took ages to work out so I was very pleased when that finally came to me! Other than those it had been a pretty slow start for me so far but there are participation points to be had at the very least

11. MICHAEL'S BREAKING INTO SONG STILL TOOK IT

-> IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS - Michael Bublé

2 points

Dexton

0.5 points

Riser [band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas] (close enough for half a point)

The longest anagram in the quiz, but one of the very few descriptive ones as the dulcet tones of Mr Bublé on his heavily playlisted rendition of the old standard took it all the way to number seven in 2018, and again in the lead up to last Christmas.

12. A WONDER AMONG US

-> DANGEROUS WOMAN - Ariana Grande

rio309 [Ne-Yo - Dangerous Woman]

0 points

Riser [Madonna - The Power Of Good-Bye]

Another descriptive anagram :D This got more correct guesses than Bad Romance!

Wow, another one with Christmas in it! :o If only I had thought to look for that word, especially having got a Christmas song in the NMTBJ quiz last week!

12. A WONDER AMONG US

-> DANGEROUS WOMAN - Ariana Grande

Another descriptive anagram :D This got more correct guesses than Bad Romance!

Absolutely! :D

Riser [Madonna - Nothing Really Matters]

The follow-up to 5,6,7,8, this song’s chart run opened with 6-7-9-7-6, before the group reached the Top 5 with their next 13 singles. This proved to be a tricky one for most of you!

14. IT'S ITCHY

-> THIS CITY - Sam Fischer

Peak #16 (2020) | Letters 8 | Guessed by 13

rio309 [sam Fender - This City] (wrong Sam!)

0 points

Riser [shawn Mendes - Stitchiy]

Some might suggest this is an apt anagram, based on the reaction to its persistent ACR-dodging chart run last summer, but I listened to it last week for the first time this year and found it better than I remembered.

Did I lose a point for saying Buble and not Bublé

You didn't give an artist for that one on the form, unfortunately

Riser [Elton John - Made In England], PeteFromLeeds [something and something else]

One of the few dance tracks in this quiz, this was very popular on Buzzjack at the time and I thought it might be guessed by a few more than it has. Martin Solveig is the joint lead so I docked half a point if you only mentioned Jax Jones.

rio309 [Peter, Stig & Bjorn (or something like that!) - Young Folks]

One of my favourite short anagrams here. This song originally made the Top 40 in 2006 but peaked on re-release after the distinctive whistling hook was featured in an advert the following year.

Oh I could have got both of those! They're pretty short as well but I just wasn't getting anywhere, All Day and Night is a tune as well!

rio309 [idiot Roar]

This is probably one of the least known songs in this quiz, but a highly guessable one as there aren’t many other ways to rearrange the letters! The song peaked at number thirty on original release and coincidentally did so again on re-release the following year.

18. ENTER UNION CONCERT

-> RETURN TO INNOCENCE - Enigma

Riser [Madonna - Another Suitcase In Another Hall]

We go back to 1994 for the earliest peaking song in the quiz. Only this week it was placed 47th in Buzzjack’s Ultimate UK Number 3 Single so I thought maybe a few more of you might have worked it out. The video is posted there, so I’ve put Riot Radio’s here instead.

I doubt I would have got Return To Innocence if it wasn't for the reminder from it being in that rate recently!

Riser [Paolo Nutini - New Shoes]

The Levellers aren’t a band you hear much about on Buzzjack, but they are still going. They had eight Top 20 hits in the 1990s, including one #11 and four which peaked at #12, of which this is one. Appropriately for the anagram, The Clash’s Joe Strummer guested on honky tonk piano on it. It’s another one where you could reasonably guess the title even if you didn’t know the song.

20. SURE HAD FUN, BUT READ

-> DEAR FUTURE HUSBAND - Meghan Trainor

Peak #20 (2015) | Letters 17 | Guessed by 7

Riser [Madonna - This Used To Be My Playground]

Meghan’s third UK hit, which some have suggested bears a resemblance to Olly Murs’ Dance With Me Tonight, although both songs have a doo-wop influence that goes back much further.

Twenty songs down and four people have 100% scores so far! That is about to change...

Riser [The Script - The Man Who Can't Be Moved]

I honestly thought nobody was going to work this one out - how wrong I was! Originally a #28 hit in 1997, a remix took it back to the exact same position a few months later. It was ETA’s only charting single - and two weeks too late for the bonus question in Pete’s Dingbats quiz, above is a YouTube link to a track by a Danish act :)
