How much did Frankie Gies To Hollywood’s second album sell? The first had 3 number ones and the second had a couple of top 30’hits, seemed like a big fall!

 

Says 'Liverpool' went Gold and 'Rage Hard' single was a no.4 hit so a big drop albeit not catastrophic.

 

Elastica's self titled debut went Gold made no.1 and was on the album chart for 28 weeks - the much delayed follow up 'Menace' only made no.24 for 2 weeks and not certified.

Mel B could slightly fall into this aswell, i know Hot wasnt a huge sucesss but in comparison to her second album it was.

I wish they’d stop publishing Duffy in articles like this, poor lamb has been through enough.

Yea, Duffy's situation was disgusting and it should always at least be pointed out.

'White lililes Island' was a great album and although it was commercial suicide I loved "That Day" as a comeback single. Completely brave choice which didn't pay off.

I prefer white lilies island to her debut.

I'll never forget the weird stratergy they did with Natasha Bedingfield's second album. They basically released two different albums as her second album, one in the US/Canada and a different one internationally. If they took the best tracks from both albums and put it into one album and used some of the leftover tracks for a deluxe verison she would've done much better. "Pocketful of Sunshine" not being released as a single in the UK is criminal. It would've been a big hit and carried the album. :(

 

Duffy's situation is really tragic though and I don't think she really deserves to be listed here considering what happened to her is likely the reason the second album campaign was cut so short and she hasn't released an album since. I hope when she releases her third album, which I hope is sometime this year, she'll have somewhat of a mini-comeback/successful album campaign.

No clue, but shipments vs real sales maybe?

 

I realise they're based on shipments but that's a big discrepancy.

Duffy was a mad one, I remember when she was bigger and Adele. I know some stuff has come to light recently about what happened to her which may have had some impact. I can't help but feel that the Diet Coke advert had a massive impact on her second album. I don't think her lead single helped but the advert definitely did not help.

 

Duffy’s second album was really really good, of course the lead single was poorly chosen but radio shouldn’t have written her off straight away.... she’s really talented and deserved long time success... hopefully she can return soon and release some electro disco music, totally suits her voice...

 

its unfair to brand Mika as a one album wonder, he has since then released many successful albums & singles internationally especially in France and Italy where he’s huge, and also in many parts of the world....

same goes for Natasha Bedingfield whose second US album Pocketful of sunshine reached the top 3 in the US album charts ... Ace of base also continued their international success for many years after Happy Nation...

Shoulda released 'Last Night on Earth' and 'Electric Storm'!

 

Did the whole Brian McFadden thing taint her reputation in the UK? I always thought that contributed to it.

Out of the Blue was also a very underwhelming lead single and the album just got lost in the Q4 rush.

also it's a one "hit" album wonder, Mika went from nearly 6 times Platinum (1.7 million) to Gold (100K) with album 2

so sadly he does fit

Could it be that they were only referring to sales that happened after OCC took over in 1994? Otherwise the bargain bins must've been full with those 290k unsold that stores had...

 

Re: SEB, you could argue she actually recovered from her downward spiral with Wanderlust.

I would have thought the most obvious one to put on the list is the Sex Pistols.

Strange to include artists whose second albums sold over 200k and almost got certified Platinum as "one hit album wonders", especially given that these all (Duffy, Mika, Jessie J) would basically be a year end top 5 album in today's sales climate.

 

I understand the OCC's intentions here but calling them "one hit album wonders" based on this criteria doesn't quite feel right.

Yes I would agree they were among the best songs, although maybe she found them too dark to release as singles. She released the title track as a single in Australia and it peaked at No.7, breaking a long string of No.1s, so I'm not so sure the public there or here would have taken to them.

Yes the Xmas rush timing was unfortunate. Had it been an early 2005 release it would have peaked a lot higher, although possibly sold less by not picking up Xmas shopping casual sales. A difficult album to market perhaps because all of the best songs are the darker ones, which maybe wouldn't have been a recipe for commercial success.

As an aside, I agree with others that Mika's quality has really never dipped, I guess it's just that his theatrical pop 'sound' hasn't really changed and it was only in vogue in the UK for a year or two, where we seem to go in and out of trends faster than mainland Europe.

 

Natasha Bedingfield's second album was just so poorly handled in the UK. The first two singles did well enough (although I'd have swapped them around, Babies was a bit of a career killer albeit very catchy) but it felt like a real mess of a campaign. How Pocketful Of Sunshine never got a UK push is beyond me - I think I'd have just released the US album with its extra tracks here, including a major push for that single, and cut my losses with N.B.

 

Also, Sophie E-B's second album was thwarted I guess by a busy time of year and a poorly received lead single. I wouldn't call her a one-album wonder seeing as she's so prolific 20 years later, yes she only had one big selling album but she's well loved and still getting top tens now.
