 It takes me right back to those days too!

I've now edited in info for H & Claire, Lisa and Faye... unfortunately there's barely any sales information, and what I did find for DJ and Lately is very old. I just need to edit in Claire Richards information soon - not sure how well or not she did in the download charts with her singles!

Lol at the H & Claire album being certified Silver - their label must have really overestimated demand for it. I doubt its first week sales were any higher than 15,000.

An Australian newspaper back in the late 90’s early 00’s use to publish a weekly music and movies guide every Thursday. In it was always the top 10 or 20 albums chart in Australia as well as the top 20 singles charts for Australia, UK and US.

It was always a joy getting the paper on a Thursday.

Great work Jay! Going to take a closer look and see if I can find any info for you.

Edit:

Slightly odd seeing 'Heartbeat' / 'Tragedy' opening with 67k in between two songs, from the same album, that opened with 140k. I feel like 'Heartbeat' was probably mainly pushed as first (I see it charted on the airplay chart whilst 'Tragedy' didn't, although the airplay might have been combined and 'Tragedy' just wasn't credited) and 'Tragedy' naturally gained popularity over the Christmas / New Year period. Then 'Better Best Forgotten' capitalised on the success of 'Tragedy'.

Fantastic sales for 'Heartbeat' / 'Tragedy' in the Top 10:

02 66,567

05 68,945

05 69,387

08 58,671

08 60,382

06 99,645

04 104,780

01 98,080

02 65,340

03 66,617

03 54,071

06 49,604

10 44,000

10 35,000

'Stomp' sold 48,250 at #1 to be specific: http://scans.chartarchive.org/UK/2001/UK%2...02001.01.27.pdf

Thanks everyone, and thanks Liam for that extra information!

You're right that Heartbeat was initially the mainly pushed song out of the two, which with hindsight seems like an odd decision, but at the time it felt appropriate... a ballad for winter!

I can't really remember how Tragedy suddenly caught on in such a big way to give the single sales such a boost, maybe as you say it just seemed well suited to the celebrations of Christmas and New Year. Maybe TV channels started to prioritise the Tragedy music video? I wonder if Steps shifted towards performing Tragedy during promotion after the single's release?

I actually remember buying the single in the new year, specifically because of Tragedy, so I'm pretty that coincided with the week they got to #1 *.* Just noticed that Spice Girls were at #2 in that week with 92k, falling heavily from the previous week's sales of 208,000. For Steps, that was fortunate!

Those sales were very consistent - increasing in week 2 and 3 despite being at #5 :o (I wish they'd dipped out of the Top 5 in week 3 though to allow Madonna's The Power of Good-Bye to be a #5 hit though :kink: )

That's some really great information Liam. Thank you so much!
I'm almost positive the run that Heartbeat/Tragedy experienced was almost unheard of when cd singles were the only format available. Falling down the top 10 climbing to number 1 and then experiencing loads more weeks in the top 10.

It had a similar run to All Saints - Never Ever from the year before, but in the main it was very uncommon!

Yeah it seems very uncommon.

Following the UK charts from Australia it seemed like most songs would debut then drop steadily or rapidly with very few rising over the weeks.

Anyone got any more sales updates?

Unfortunately all that we have can be found in the first few posts of this thread!

I'd say WTFH is on about 75k now.

It had sold 72,020 on 16th April, it won't have managed another 3k in 3 weeks. Probably 73k now but progress is going to be very slow from now until September, when hopefully it gets a boost because of Part 2 (I'm going to guess by then it might have made it to 80k).

Based on previous posts in the forum from April, 74,000 would be a close estimate.
While I am glad to get a new album I kind of wish it was a bonus disc to a WTFH re-release as it would help the album get to gold sales a lot quicker, it's going to be a very slow slog of quite a few years now I think.

I saw ‘Steps: Official Top 10’ on MTV Classic recently and thought I’d share it with you guys:

01. Tragedy - 1,180,000

02. 5,6,7,8 - 620,500

03. One For Sorrow - 484,000

04. Last Thing On My Mind - 388,500

05. Better Best Forgotten - 381,500

06. Love’s Got A Hold On My Heart - 337,500

07. Chain Reaction - 324,500

08. Say You’ll Be Mine - 311,000

09. It’s The Way You Make Me Feel - 282,500

10. Deeper Shade Of Blue - 238,500

One For Sorrow and Deeper Shade Of Blue are my favourites

That would’ve made so much more sense. They could’ve also made a 3 disc set with the remixes that are on cd2 of part 2.

Thanks for sharing. It’s a pretty good list.

I’m guessing 5,6,7,8 is one of their best streamers?
