I'm still yet to understand what you mean by this x

I agree. Dance music which is doing in the charts is rubbish- generic or a lazy cover. Hardly the late 90s when you had likes of System F, Cafe del Mar, Gourellya, Humate etc charting.

 I enjoyed watching that

but thats been happening for the last 20 years, it's not something that happened overnight this week
I know although think pop and hip hop quality is generally fine dance is lazy. But will shut up about it for a while. Who knows Marea may get its rewards soon.

I agree that recent commercial dance hits are overwhelmingly mediocre. It's just that 'cheesy' wouldn't be the word I'd use except for maybe 'Wellerman'. I don't see what the difference is between Noizu and the songs zenon has denounced as 'cheesy', it's pretty equally generic and bland imo. (Fred again.. is a bit better though).

Harry Styles should be able to reclaim Top 10 status this week again with Fine Line.
Charts are a joke these days, finished and irrelevant.

Old man doesn't like what young people are listening to so the charts must be done for!

Do we know how far are Rag&Pink from the top 10?

Young man doesn't realise that before he knows it, he too will be an old man saying the exact same thing.... Aside from the patronising undertone, there will always be music charts, they will evolve and their relevancy will ebb and flow, this much I've learnt so far in my 35 years.

I’m 32 hardly old!!! Music charts are irrelevant now, they were a massive deal years ago! They are still a thing but don’t have the same impact. Try to belittle me if you like but if you think 32 is old then you need help. My daughter is a teenager and loves music, has no idea who is no1, in the charts etc!!!!

okay and people still like to get involved with the chart discussion and enjoy the analytical aspect of it.

if you're just gonna be old_man_yells_at_cloud.jpg about it then don't get involved? let people enjoy what they want instead of trying to rain on everyone else's parade loool

also the constant trash talking of modern music because "it's not what it was back then!!!" is such a tired argument as if garbage music didn't exist back then.

I think there’s good and bad music in all eras but the charts are def less unique in terms of genres nowadays.

My two cents: I feel that the pop(ular) music and culture is in a bad state in the UK in general. There are not lots of big newcomers buzzing globally, opposed to 90s and 00s. If Dua Lipa wasn't active last year, the BRITS would've been without any big hitters (Harry won the single though, but with an old song).

In the US, the Hot 100 is very important. The Twitter is in a frenzy on a weekly basis on what's happening there, hence the remixes and stuff. Labels want high chart positions. The UK chart is in a lull in that sense. I don't have a cure for that though.

I complete agree with this. My daughter's not quite a teenager yet (although she does act like one sometimes ) but she's getting more and more into music and last night I had to explain to her how the charts work! I've got friends with teenage kids and despite being into music, they have no interest in the charts and have no idea what's number one. I'd say the charts are more irrelevant now than they've ever been and it's a real shame.

In fairness this is true of pretty much everything. Even in COVID times there are just far more entertainment choices than ever before so we don't get these united cultural moments to the same degree. Most stuff like that when I was growing up was just because I, and many others, literally had nothing else to do.

I think people interested in the charts we are like 0.0001% of the people, the rest don't care and have never cared

teenagers, young, and old

people like music and care about music and buy music and the colour vinyls but nobody cares if this song peaked at #7 or #777

That's just not true, people used to care about charts back in the 80s and 90s, the Battle of Britpop was a massive cultural event and made the national news. Can you imagine any kind of chart battle making the news these days? It's really in the last decade or so that people have stopped being interested.
