I will say one thing in their favour that hand was amazing 🤣 I was clutching my sides laughing 😂✌️🖕😂

I much preferred the German song to the UK one but knew it woukdnt do well but expected more than 3 points. The UK song just built into nothing for me and it was so forgettable, at least the German performance was memorable and I think Steps could easily deliver a memorable performance.

And to think we have agreed on pretty much everything so far... it's well and truly broken my friend!

The overall benefit for Steps is minimal and they are doing good as they are without Eurovision.

The press could easily turn on them if they did Eurovision and it went wrong.

It's interesting to see the varying viewpoints...

I think it could be good as long as they have a great track - if Spirit In The Sky can win the final televote and songs like Verona can qualify with the public from the semi finals (damn those juries!!), there's no reason why Steps couldn't do reasonably well with a strong track. I think off the recent album, Under My Skin and Heartbreak In This City could have done very well points wise - UMS appealing massively to both juries and the public. Their output these days has all the charm of what viewers are looking for from a Eurovision pure pop song - a genre that is lacking in the contest now, but one that the contest is famed for. If done well (which Steps can do), I think it could bring in masses of votes.

My worry would be the staging. The BBC have a knack of completely messing up on that side of things - in recent years, only Lucie Jones has had a decent set up, so creative control should remain fully with Steps, or someone that they trust to do a good job.

With the allowance of pre-recorded backing vocals in the contest now, that also alleviates my other concern that I had about their vocals being strong enough. While they do have good voices, the option to blend the live vocals with backing would enhance the quality much more than if it was just their 5 voices (plus 1 potential backing?!)

It mainly comes down the strength of the song though. If they have a strong song to go with then I would love them to try it, but anything less than magnificent then I'd rather they didn't as it would risk sullying their image that they have worked very hard on building up since their 2017 return.

If Steps had performed Spirit in the Sky it would have provided them with a big UK hit.
Oh Keiino that was a real moment, I adore that song and so wanted them to win, the juries royally screwed their chances.

Steps have built up a fantastic legacy in the UK as one of the most successful and celebrated pop acts of the 90s. They comfortably achieve hit albums and sell arena dates after almost 25 years - I’m sure they must pinch themselves. I think they’re all comfortable with this level of success and are happy with the positivity they receive and the status they have.

I truly think Steps taking part in Eurovision is way too risky. The UK rarely does well (and maybe that’s deserved most of the time!), but there’s a stigma to flopping at Eurovision. “Steps come last in Eurovision” or even achieving very low points is surely not something they want to associate themselves with. I think most of them (aside from H) would say no because they are cautious and very satisfied with how things are for Steps without rocking the boat. I can imagine Claire and Lisa in particular would be incredibly annoyed and hurt with an embarrassing result.

For me, it’s not about Steps being above Eurovision, because I don’t believe they are. It’s just too much of a gamble, and I don’t see the pros of taking part (increased exposure in Europe) outweighing the cons (a high chance of adding a negative moment to their legacy, in their home market of the UK).

I know this is a pessimistic viewpoint but I really would prefer them not to do it. The UK needs to find a great contemporary artist to do it. James Newman is talented, but I think his problem was that he wasn’t energetic enough for the song... combine that with the staging and it came across as a flat moment. I will say that Embers is one of the few songs in that final that’s still stuck in my head now, so make of that what you will...!

They are very good points that i do agree withm they definitely are comfortable where they are right now and their current siutaion also allows them to do their own thing outside the band which is very important to them. I could def see Lisa ben hugely disappointed if they done poorly. H does seem like the only member who would want to do it, Claire could have easily entered with a ballad as i think she could nail a very strong ballad at Eurovision if she choose to do that.
I think they could do pretty well if they entered providing the song was something strong like Scared of the Dark. They are no longer a singles chart act so worrying about that side of things would be pointless. If they could Bring the song, have decent staging and allowed Claire and Faye to do the live vocals it could work.
