Biography

Polo G

Even in the crowded field of mournful singer-rappers, Polo G stands out. It’s not the depth of his trauma—poverty, hunger, gang violence, drug addiction, and prison, all before his 20th birthday—or even his willingness to share it. It’s his focus. Listen to a Polo record—“Heartless,” “Pop Out,” “Through da Storm,” “Go Stupid”—and you can hear an artist obsessed by craft. The flow is dense but melodic, the lyrics plainspoken but crammed with imagery and detail, more in tune with classic rap virtuosity than the loose impressionism that ruled most of the 2010s. And in a culture of rappers making records back-to-back-to-back to capitalize on interest, Polo has been borderline stingy: no mixtapes, no bloated deluxe editions three months after the initial drop, albums running closer to 40 minutes than 80. He’s said in the past that he doesn’t freestyle, he writes. And when he’s done writing—that’s when he goes to record. And if he doesn’t love what comes out at the session? Like, love-it love? He keeps it to himself.

Born Taurus Bartlett in 1999, Polo was raised in Chicago public housing, coming up through the rough, quick-delivery style of local hip-hop known as drill. Like local heroes G Herbo, Lil Durk, and, to a lesser extent, Chief Keef, Polo’s primary subject was pain: personal, racial, generational. But as compelling and tightly wound as his debut was (2019’s Die a Legend), he knew you could only get so much mileage out of the same story, and took his follow-up—2020’s THE GOAT—as a chance to evolve, exploring more pop- and club-oriented sounds while retaining the intensity that makes his performances shine. - Apple Music

Lil Wayne

When Lil Wayne debuted as a 12-year-old kid on the B.G.’z 1995 album True Story, it wasn’t exactly clear that he’d become one of the best rappers of his generation. It’s not just that he’s clever or funny—it’s the way his style manages to balance classic, boast-driven rap with the kind of wild metaphors and constellatory thinking often left to poets. In other words, Wayne didn’t just get high, he ate stars; he didn’t just devour rappers, he told you—in gross, gastrointestinal detail—how they felt going down, stretching the conventional vocabulary of rap to its limits.

A native of New Orleans (“That’s why I holler ‘Hollygrove’ on each and every song,” he raps on Tha Carter II’s “Fly In”), Wayne (born Dwayne Carter in 1982) started writing rhymes at eight or nine, attracting the attention of Cash Money Records cofounder Bryan “Baby” Williams by freestyling relentlessly into Williams’ voicemail. (As recently as 2015, Wayne still knew the number by heart.) After joining the short-lived but influential Hot Boys with fellow Cash Money rappers Juvenile, B.G., and Turk, Wayne launched an instantaneously successful solo career, exploring his ever-evolving lyricism while moving further into the mainstream, turning out a dizzying string of albums and mixtapes in the 2000s that were as radical as they were popular, his Tha Carter series most notable among them. In 2005, he managed to find time to start Young Money Entertainment, signing Nicki Minaj and Drake before most people knew their names.

Beset by legal troubles (including a one-year sentence at Rikers Island), health issues (including an epilepsy diagnosis), and disagreements with his label, Wayne had a rough start to the 2010s but barely slowed down, releasing a steady stream of albums and mixtapes—including full-length collaborations with T-Pain and 2 Chainz—that continued to mine his seemingly endless imagination. Even if he made good on his periodic threats to retire (he called 2018’s Tha Carter V his last studio album), the fallout from his impact is everywhere, from Young Thug to Migos to Tyler, the Creator and Chance the Rapper—anyone who zigs when the rest zag. - Apple Music

Biography

Born Tijs Michiel Verwest in the small Dutch city of Breda in 1969, Tiësto went on to become more than just a world-famous electronic musician—he largely created the model for a powerhouse DJ in the 21st century. He got his start in the mid-’80s, when the skeletal sounds of Belgian new beat ruled Holland’s clubs, but it was trance—sleeker and more emotive—that moved him. His first proper DJ mix , 1997’s Magik One (First Flight), showcases his signature style in dreamy synth melodies drawn out above tough but streamlined drum grooves. As trance’s foremost ambassador, he pioneered stadium raving with solo DJ concerts in sports arenas; in 2004, he played for millions at the Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Athens. And his Club Life weekly radio show and mix series, one of trance’s premier global platforms, became synonymous with the genre itself. But you don’t become the world’s No. 1 DJ by sitting still. By 2011’s Club Life: Volume One Las Vegas, Tiësto was following through on a shift that had begun with his 2009 album, Kaleidoscope, a blend of high-energy trance and airy pop melodies that heralded the next big rave revolution: EDM. With 2014’s A Town Called Paradise, he made good on EDM’s anything-goes promise with a collection encompassing soaring toplines, massive drops, and other big-room thrills without turning his back on the aching melodies that made his name. As the decade drew to a close, playful collabs with a new generation of producers who had come up in his wake—The Chainsmokers, Oliver Heldens, DJ Snake, Hardwell—only served to confirm his versatility and cement his legacy. - Apple Music

The mention of Måneskin's name alone feels surreal before we've even got to the Italian rock song playing on radio

Yay for a good handful of newies!

Good start to the top 40 with The Business even if it has been around for ages now!

So glad Tiesto had stayed in for another week, it's such a bop
