Posted June 17, 20214 yr Måneskin won the 65th Eurovision Song Contest last month and are already well on their way to becoming global superstars. After Rotterdam impeccably hosted the most welcome return of our beloved contest, in the most unusual of circumstances, all eyes turn to Italy for 2022. At the time of writing, 12 cities have expressed interest in hosting and 12 countries have provisionally confirmed for the contest. Eurovision continues to grow bigger and bigger, join us for the build up to what is certainly going to be, based on past experiences for better or worse, the television event of the year!
June 17, 20214 yr :cheer: I've been getting up to speed on how their Sanremo festival works and I gather it's very bloated and OTT, intrigued to see what their Eurovision hosting will be like as I haven't watched any full shows pre-2007. As for their own talent... bring on Måneskin, Mahmood and maybe even OG winner Gigliola Cinquetti.
June 17, 20214 yr Sanremo is wild. The best of Italian music, and they all spend ages every evening covering each other until somehow a winner is found. I expect and hope the Italian delegation will put their stamp all over it. Out of the cities announced, and it's a lot - there's a lot who just seem to be throwing their hat in the ring for the sake of it, including several stadiums that'd need a roof constructed - I'd expect it'll be between Milan and Turin, maybe Rome as third most likely.
June 17, 20214 yr Author I have never fully committed to a Sanremo, mainly as by the time it finishes I'm usually getting up for work, but I'll try to dip in a lot more next year!
June 17, 20214 yr Well if you want a taste for what the bar being set is for the Italian hosting, the full show of Rome 1991 is available on YouTube but fair warning that it is not for the faint hearted! Less to be enjoyed as much as experienced! It'll be interesting to see what the impact of Maneskin's big success off the back of Rotterdam is on the first fully "post-covid" selection season - are we expecting a 2007 style native language rock revival? The smart money is definitely on Turin being the host city.
June 17, 20214 yr I would be very tempted to make the pilgrimage to ESC2022 as Italy is somewhere I badly want to go do in that respect Rome is preferable but I can always stay in rome for a week and travel to the host city for the final Quite excited to see what they do given that Måneskin are possibly the most successful winners post-Contest in an extremely long time
October 8, 20213 yr The decision is... Turin! A bit unexpected, but I think we need to be prepared for a lot of unexpected things from the italians
October 8, 20213 yr Good to finally have that confirmed now! Sooooooo excited already - I know what it feels like to be a Euroloon now
October 8, 20213 yr I had that as one of the more likely options, a Eurovision within range of the Alps should make for some great location shots.
October 8, 20213 yr Not hugely surprised by that. Turin is a quite large and important industrial city so would make sense it would have sufficient hotel and event/conference space for the overall travelling circus
October 8, 20213 yr For the first time in my life I might actually go to live show :o next year…when do they usually come up with dates?
October 8, 20213 yr Anyone managed to book any accommodation? Everything seems to have gone quickly. And now prices have tripled in a matter of hours.
October 9, 20213 yr ^Tbh I've not even bothered looking at accommodation yet, the two times I've been (plus 2020 pre-Covid) I haven't booked immediately after the announcement, more stuff will come on the market and the more expensive stuff will (hopefully) come down in price over time if no one's snapping it up at the extortionate prices. Took a look at flights, about £135 return per person with Ryanair with NO add-ons...are they having a laugh? When you're used to £14.99 flights with them, I'd rather just take a chance and wait it out for easyJet, BA and others to release flights. All that time waiting and building up to the announcement and then it just ends up being the city that was being touted when Italy were favourites in 2017 :') For the first time in my life I might actually go to live show :o next year…when do they usually come up with dates? Dates have been announced too! 10th/12th/14th May
October 9, 20213 yr Also if other cheap flights direct to Turin don’t show up you could always fly cheap to Milan then get a train to Turin. I don’t think it’s more than a couple of hours away. I provisionally booked a free cancellation hotel in the moments after the host city was announced. Not booking flights because the only direct one (Ryanair) is a con of a price, as Jahq says. Next challenge is getting the time off work…
October 9, 20213 yr Considering driving down, it’s only 10 or so hours and quite a nice route via the swiss alps
October 9, 20213 yr The decision is... Turin! A bit unexpected, but I think we need to be prepared for a lot of unexpected things from the italians Unexpected? Most people predicted Turin.
October 10, 20213 yr Not surprised they've gone with Turin given what was reportedly already being prepared in the run up to 2017 - is also probably the safest bet out of the three leading contenders as well.
October 10, 20213 yr I think Turin is the only city that did a promotional video? In the next few months I probably cannot get this phrase outta my head: "Where? In Torino!"
