ATB is okay but I think there were far better trance singles from the era, although I'd rather 9PM made number one than none of them at all.

Enigma is a huge favourite of mine, so different for the time and actually backed up by a few decent albums too.

And finally, QUEEN TASMIN! *.* I'll always remember when she joined my old site upon invite for a Q&A session, such a darling. ALTHOUGH I am mostly surprised and indeed AGOG at the lack of Shoat points for Sleeping Satellite.

That tends to be the situation with most genres.

I know this doesn't apply to ATB but I think I saw a summary of the development of a dance or electronic genre a few years back

Something like...

Year 1

Underground hits get released

Year 2

Same underground hits get re-released and become bigger hits.

Trendy magazines begin coverage

End of year surveys feature notable examples of the genre in the top 5.

Year 3

The "featuring" era begins.

Instrumental tracks get re-released with female vocalist.

Genre explodes

Year 4

Watered down 80s cover versions featuring only the most basic elements of the original sound.

Sadeness is my favourite of those 3 by far. I only discovered it properly recently with the 90s TOTP review and didn’t quite vote for it but it’s such a one-off. I love how the tension builds through the song as well.

9pm is kinda meh for me and Sleeping Satellite a lovely song but nothing Earth-shattering.

I like all of that batch, but the weakest is 9PM by some distance, and the best 2 are Tasmin Archer and Enigma. Sadeness is just amazing, and top 2 faves of moi, AH, dandy, Jade. Everyone who didn't vote for it: Shame! (ring bell) Shame! (ring bell) Shame! (ring bell) :P

Praise You is fab, but Right Here Right Now is the popchartfreak chart-topper. Queen is touching but Innuendo is much better. Dubs is pretty decent, but SOS Band is better.

J'adore '9pm (Til I Come)' and especially 'Sadeness' I was recently horrified to find that the latter had disappeared from Spotify but, don't panic, it's back now :kink:

oh I love those 3

loved Sleeping Satellite when originally released, it's almost too nice to be a #1, haven't heard it in ages... I know she had some smaller hits after that, but she's album a one-hit-wodner in the sense that people only know Sleeping Satellite from her.

looooved 9pm when originally released, was kinda obsessed with it, I had a phase when I was very much into this kind of music. I really think it's one of the best dance tracks ever

the Enigma song I like but don't love... they have much much better songs in there catalog, like The eyes of Truth or Beyond the invisible. I think I much prefer albums 2 and 3 cos they had world music elements rather than the Gregorian chants of the debut album.

That tends to be the situation with most genres.

 so true like!

I've been expecting Sleeping Satellite to show up for so long now, just because it's such a random entity up here that I could easily see it passed up on votes in such a big list. Hard to think of a more pleasant nostalgia blanket though.
^hahaha sure :D there should be a law forbidding cover, same as it's forbidden t use a sample

I loved what Aurora did with "Ordinary World". But "Sleeping Satellite"? Hard pass.

Dandu* - I do think Tasmin was my #31. With so much MOR and beige dance in the 90s, deciding what to leave out was a real Sophie's Choice :/

(I actually preferred some of the more minor hits / album tracks from her - especially "In Your Care" when she suddenly spits out "Son-of-a-bitch" having lulled you into thinking you were listening to a tepid piano ballad)

Sleeping Satellite (by Tasmin) really is glorious, a great example of a song being No.1 purely for being a great song - no influence from how popular the artist was etc.

9PM (Till I Come) would have been No.1 for me if I'd voted, it's essentially the song that made me properly fall in love with dance (and trance) music. As folklore has it, I went into Virgin with only £3 to spend to buy either S Club 7's Bring It All Back or Jewel's Down So Long (!), couldn't decide which, heard 9PM (Till I Come) on a listening post and my mind was made up there and then what to buy. It blew my 12-year-old mind, such a great track.

Spot on re tasmin.

Well I wasnt 12 but had I been I expect I'd have opted for S Club considering what I was buying when I was 12 (Partridge Family, Archies) so I guess that means you were cooler at 12 than I was  At age 41 I rated 9PM with a chart run of one week at 66, Jewel peak of 39 and S Club failed to chart, so on the whole I would have opted for Jewel. But really I opted for That Don't Impress Me Much back in June '99, bit of Shania (which should have topped the charts and been on the rundown), and Backstreet Boys I Want It That Way :D

Naimee Coleman version was better.

Unfortunately the correct decision would have been Jewel. Jewel 20 times over.

9pm is fine, but I far prefer Don't Stop, which was basically the same song but with far more urgency and energy.

The biggest seller of 96 is also our preferred Fugees chart topper.

I did buy Jewel a few weeks later, such an underrated song/artist in the UK. I never did buy S Club 7 though.
