Don’t Speak is a fantastic song - I think it’s suffered from overplay for me over the years (my local radio station would never leave it alone).

Firestarter is absolutely a masterpiece, just not something I’d actively choose to listen to.

After the elimination of "Don't Speak" only one song with my points will come.

Prodigy is a main contender for all-time worst UK group.

Firestarter still has such a powerful and unique sound for a hit song, let alone a number 1.

As one of the half who didn't vote for Don't Speak, I did actually buy the single back then, it just slowly dropped off my radar over time.

love those two, absolute classics

after all these years I still remember all the lyrics for Don't Speak by heart

what a year 1996 was for dance music with Breathe, Firestarter, Setting sun, Children, Born slippy, Insomnia

Both those are no-question great singles, even if I didn't have enough points to vote for them, and Don't Speak has had a lot of radio play over the years.

Don't Speak has one of the best opening lines ever

(You and me, we used to be together, everyday together, always)

crazy how Gwen wrote it about the bass player in No Doubt after they broke up and

then they had to perform it for 25 years :D

also bizarre it never charted in the US cos of the silly Billboard rules, really weird that it's not a US #1 (well it isn't even a US top 100!)

NO 17- 228 POINTS

Firestarter The Prodigy

No words.

Billboard chart rules have always been a bit mad, though in the 90's the main problem was the greedy record companies trying to kill off the single to force people to buy a whole album to buy one track. It worked as well, they did kill off the physical single so the charts were based on radio play mostly, till downloads saved the single as a thing in the USA.

That video of the creation of Firestarter is all kinds of amazing

You have to be a real genius to do that

How did we go from such amazing dance tracks like Firestarter to the generic stupid dance cover versions we have now dominating the charts :/

Equalling the record number of weeks taken to make No 1, this was Celine’s first No 1 and clearly the one we prefer. Some have been calling it for it a while but 14 people threw some votes at it and it is our favourite Chart topper of 1995- it’s official!

The second highest girlgroup track is also our favourite All Saints moment pre 2000 anyway

Never Ever is great, think it's much better than any Spice single to be honest

Always had a soft spot for Think Twice even if it's super AOR, maybe cos how long it took to climb to #1

Edited by Bjork

In defence of Think Twice… I don’t normally go for soppy ballads at all but I’ve always loved this one. It was shortly after I started following the charts in late 94 that they showed a song on TOTP that had been hanging around for a while and had finally reached #20. It then jumped into the Top 10 and crept its way up, stalled a bit over Christmas but then was at #2 for a few weeks in the new year and then finally #1. And all the other boys in my class hated it but I liked being different…

Never Ever is just so incredibly soulful for a girl group song. Pure Shores is their masterpiece for me but this one is great (and another long run and climb to #1 for us chart needs to marvel at, at a time when almost everything peaked in the first week).

Is ‘Think Twice’ the last number one to rise to its peak of the old era?
Think Twice is ace - by far the best Celine song. A bit of a mid90s classic IMO.
Is ‘Think Twice’ the last number one to rise to its peak of the old era?

Well there were a few exceptions in the late 90s and early 00s - Return of the Mack, Never Ever as I mentioned, Tragedy, Bob the Builder, Cha Cha Slide…

Mark Morrison was a traditional type of rise but from in the top 10, I assume it had a TOTP performance to help with the quite dramatic rise, it being a big song helped of course too!

With ‘Tragedy’ it was the Christmas period which moved it down the chart then the new year when it rose up to its new peak. The All Saints one was again a high top 5 entry so not sure it counts as a tradition rise. Bob the Builder and Cha Cha Slide both of course rose from 2-1 so not sure they count either.

I don't hate Firestarter and Breathe but I do much prefer current generic dance music tbh. Firestarter and Breathe are much more PUNK music than dance. Prodigy's first eras were brilliant though. Songs like Charly, Out of Space and Everybody is in the Place are simply amazing, definitely the kind of dance music I love, but they failed to be UK number ones unfortunately. :(

Also Prodigy's lead singer look in Firestarter and Breathe videos used to scare me and I don't wanna have nightmares going to bed now thinking in a Pennywise look-a-like.
