A time agent from the 51st century, we first meet Captain Jack Harkness in series 1 during the London blitz when he saves a Union Jack t-shirt-wearing Rose from falling to her death. Full of charm and offering just the level of polish and charisma that Rose desired from the Doctor, Jack makes a strong first impression, but it later transpires that he caused the Empty Child and its gas mark army inadvertently, through a con he was trying to pull off. Nonetheless, Jack becomes a hero willing to sacrifice himself, and the Doctor brings him along for the ride. Later, Jack dies when he's exterminated, but Rose brings him back - permanently. Eventually, Jack finds his way to Torchwood, and pops up for a few more adventures with the Doctor alongside being the star of his own spin-off.

I had no idea this was happening but I chose Sarah Jane Smith as my least favourite. I absolutely adore all five though, so it's a hard decision regardless.
