Same old story, Spotify probably think like Radio 1 that ABBA are just a veteran act and won't appeal to a younger audience. Nonsense but older acts always get snubbed by the industry eventually. Even Madonna & The Beatles got snubbed by radio, Cold Heart is near the bottom of Hot Hits despite doing very well and probably only been added quicker because of the Dua feature.

 

Interestingly in the recent Radio 1 interview with the bloke who runs it - which was posted here - he was talking about their new music shows and younger audiences being receptive to a much greater range of music as a result of streaming rather than just current pop trends, so I wouldn't be suprised if something like ABBA reforming (god knows what would even came close to that though - ) happened again it might actually feature on the future sounds show or something

They can ignore them and almost definitely will continue to... :kink: to be fair, though ABBA most definitely have a wider audience than the ageist industry would have you think, I think they'd sound out of place on Capital alongside the types of tracks they usually play.

On Friday I would have said the same about Spotify putting them on Hot Hits U.K. so who knows what will happen.

 

I’m also really curious to see how the 80,000 stack up against the preorders for the new Ed album.

That is the good thing about Spotify & Apple Music, if people are steaming a song they will add it to their playlists regardless of an artists age (ABBA, Atomic Kitten, Elton, Westlife etc)

 

Where as once Radio 1 is done with you, there is no coming back from that.

I still think he’ll comfortably be #1 ahead of Ed on Friday, that’s the 3rd day in a row he’s been ahead of him on Spotify now plus still ahead on Apple. With Girls Want Girls also added as track #1 on HH now.

Explain Wolf Alice on the Radio 1 A list then :lol: or CHVRCHES on the B list. Or any number of others on the R1 playlist who don't necessarily get singles chart success. Not every artist who manages a high-charting album is equivalent to ABBA or Ball & Boe. It's about target audiences. Obviously ABBA have more younger fans than Ball & Boe will but I can understand Radio 1 being apprehensive to give them a slot over an up-and-coming new artist for example.

 

Capital on the other hand pay much closer attention to the chart but even that's not a guarantee. They've given a lot of support to the Billen Ted/Mae Muller song. They had an MK track on the playlist for months and it never charted. Equally, they ignore some big hits - Cold Heart isn't on their playlist right now, nor is a single Kanye or Drake song, or Tones and I - Fly Away, to name just a few. They basically play modern pop / dance and that's about it.

I know removing the album bombs is just whatifery but Don’t Shut Me Down at #18 and Cold Heart at #26! Really hope these two are coming to smash even harder over the next couple of weeks.

I think 'I Still Have Faith In You' will drop quite quickly but 'Don't Shut Me Down' is holding up impressively well so could be sticking around for a bit (though still most likely peaking on week 1 unless it really picks up some real streaming traction (aka TikTok virality x))

 

Interested to see if DSMD separating itself on streaming will be enough to offset the early advantage ISHFIY had from vinyl sales this week :thinking:
