Does Universal get any of their merch sales? As far as I know the girls do not have a recording contract with them. Universal only holds the distribution rights to their catalogue. Universal wouldn't be entitled to a percentage of their merchandise sales unless the girls agreed to give them some.

Universal does not "only hold the distribution rights to their catalogue". Universal owns all their master recordings. This is not a distribution deal.

As for their merchandise:

Thank you for this link. So It seems the girls did sign some sort of contract with Universal then. Good to know. Hopefully Universal does a better job in the future because these anniversary editions are not doing as well as other artists.

When I spoke to someone about the webstore they said the UK sales are less than 25% of their sales.

So you can times that by 3, do the same for the cassette £19.99 each and download sales too £12.99 each

Then there will be the CD sales to come. Plus any streaming money.

Also why would you disqualify merch, it is where most artist make their money now at 50 quid a jumper or 60 quid a hoodie. I'm sure SW25 was still hugely profitable.

I didnt know about the 25% from the UK! Those extourtionate shipping costs will come in handy then ah

And yes, touring and merch are the main drivers of artists' income, but the Spice Girls did sign that deal with Universal who also run their store, so I would imagine it is all part of the profit/uptake for the overall Spiceworld25 project..

In the end, the girls themselves have had little involvement, bar writing the thank yous and aproving the tracklist.

I do wish they would sign a deal like Madonna and Mariah did recently, to celebrate their back catalogues with each artist heavily involved in the process and promo of it. Hell, Madonna is even throwing out new remixes and versions of her previous hits with new upcoming artists... IMAGINE what the girls could do if they had a proper deal...

It all depends on the individual artist and their wishes a lot of the time. George Michael's recent resissue keeps getting brought up bit he and his estate were/are clear on not using unreleased stuff for these releases.

Some want to include everything possible and make them big things others just add a slip case or coloured vinyl and nothing new. Spice girls seem to fall somewhere in the middle which is probably why people complain so much. If Spice25 and SW25 were just coloured vinyls and fresh packaging people would just accept that is what the release are. They however opened the vaults and gave fans some stuff but not everything so now it is well why not everything and lots of complaints.

Hhhhmmm I mean yes and no to be honest.

Yes, the Spice25 tracklist gave us some new stuff but it was technically ONE unreleased song, they barely 'opened up the vaults', sorry. The use of demos and/or rare mixes is very common standard across the industry for this type of release.

The main complaint I have seen, besides the lack of demos and unreleased songs in Spiceworld25 (which ended up being the least of their problems) has been about the *quality* of what is being put out there. It's truly shocking how low quality it is, and it has been widespread criticism based on that. In my view, these criticisms are perfectly justified.

Had it been at least good design and good audio quality, then the fans wouldnt be so upset. Of course, we all wanted demos and unreleased tracks, but what killed it was the shite quality for overtly expensive items YET AGAIN. Like, why would I pay £30 for a really badly designed picture disk vinyl with the same songs we're heard over and over again when they arent even re-mastered? We can get better elsewhere?...

That's the issue here.

That is what I said though. Had they just reissused the albums on coloured vinyls or limited edition photo book cd I think people would have been much less critical and just accepted they were nice additions to people's collections.

Once extra stuff was added to the tracklist then it opened a can of worms as to what was added, what wasn't, what the quality of it was and so on.

I've lurked this board a while and have noticed you do seem to stick up for their team a crazy amount. If you are just another fan, surely you could see the mistakes they've made and how poor the release was in every way?

Yes the girls could've vetoed demos, but that's no excuse for the poor quality live audio or the lack of variation when it comes to the remixes or using fan created content for t-shirts/posters and the booklet! It's disgustingly overpriced, cheaply produced and lazily prepared.

and "opened the vaults"... perhaps for Spice25, but for this era they clearly didn't. They haven't even used any of Christophe Gstalder's outtake album photoshoot imagery!!

I have switched almost exclusively to streaming music so I take what I want and don't worry about the rest. I would defo have a different stance if this was a brand new album though, then I'd want full involvement, top quality ect.

I'm very much one of those who has moved almost exclusively to streaming, I think I only get the physical these days out of FOMO and a sense of nostalgia in buying something physical. So the actual upsides are easier for me to see I guess. We have begged for Step to me on streaming for a decade and it is here! There have been times when I thought that would never happen. The video content on Youtube has been great, the SUYL alt video is a revelation of colour and a completely different take. The Step to me lyric video is top notch. We have Move Over in HQ on youtube now from Istanbul and NGUOTGT I and others have asked for a clips video for.

The live tracks are shoddy but then I rarely ever stream an audio live track. They have better quality live tracks on streaming already I barely have ever listened to. So whilst the quality is crap I'm not going to ever listen to them any way. The Viva Forever remix is a nice addition to what I will stream.

I want Viva Forever live at Wembley in HQ on their youtube for its 25th anniversary next. That is the defining live moment for me of them musically.

I could complain over and over about the quality of the live tracks, cus as I've said they are crap but I probably would never listen to them if in ultra HQ so it just isn't something I care to repeat over and over.

People complain about the design but some love it some hate it. I'm happy to have something different to the SW cover I have 3 copies of already. The cassette inlay is very glossy and nice too.

Saw the Picture Disk and the Colour vinyl today in Fnac and huns, I could not believe the prices... 50euros for a picture disk that looks like an awful print job? I think not -_-

George Michael's latest similar release had prices from 19.99euros to 25euros. Beats me.

Michael Jackson's 40th anniversary rerelease of Thriller album is #11 in the midweeks today. It is the biggest selling album ever, it has new unreleased material on a 2nd disc. Has a very cheap £15 two CD format and 3 others. Given it will be front loaded could easily miss the top 20 or worse come Friday.

These things aren't always a guaranteed seller and there can be reasons they don't always do amazingly.

You can try and justify SW 25 underperforming all you want. The vast majority of fans had issues with it, hence why it didn't do very well.

Plus, let's just say that Michael Jackson releases haven't exactly been performing as well as they used to over the past couple of years?

I mean, for no reason at all obviously.

Who is justifying it? I was just posting to show it happens that these things sometimes underperform for all sorts of reasons. I don't see a problem when people have posted that George Michael's rerelease did well.

Spiceworld25 Double CD is apparently delayed again to January 6th

Although in a less competitive week, it might actually go Top200 again lol ^_^
