Sorry to be bumping this topic again but an excellent article is over on Dazed which has input from Adam Klein (Fascination Management) which has some levels of analysis that help explain away why recent girl groups haven't worked. Frightening reading especially on the whole "influencer" culture: https://www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/...band-little-mix

I know Jade from Little Mix mentioned on Charli XcX's podcast this week that she hoped another band would carry on where they are leaving off. I've gone to check out FLO who are mentioned in this article. Really good song, insane harmonies too! I would be here for them doing well:

It will be very strange having no commercially successful girlband in the UK charts, there has always been at least 1 on the go since the Spice Girls launched? It’s a very British thing that we love girlbands, the states doesn’t have the same appreciation for girl groups.

I would guess the label’s aren’t actively searching for a girlband right now, as they know it would be an uphill struggle in 2022, as there are so many metrics to consider and get right. It probably will happen at some point maybe as the market changes again.

Well seeing as the Shets wwre just a Cowell band with 6th member Simon cowell, who told them what to sing and how to dance, we've actually been without a girl group since the Saturdays!!! But timrs have changed. However, we had rhe All Saints up until 2016...

I fear boy bands and girl bands are seen as things of the past now. :(

It’s just too difficult to launch them in the streaming era and financially it’s not worth splitting costs five ways either.

It will probably be dead until One Direction, Fifth Harmony and Little Mix make their comebacks.

 Not ONE of those is makin a comeback and evwn if they did, they wouldn't be successful. Maybe One D could get a couple hits ... like GA comebqck, but it would be weird when solo they are bigger than the band, like Cheryl.

I think girl / boy bands are a thing of the past now for sure!

They do seem pretty dated as a concept.

Hopefully things will turn back around though and a couple will break through in 10 or so years from now.

Little Mix have done incredibly well to still be achieving hits and have held a fanbase that has moved into streaming...But the last 2 songs didn’t resonate at all so I’m unsure if they would have even been able to survive much longer chart wise anyway as a three and with all the press around Jesy / the group.

Why wouldn't they make a comeback? Every band breaks up and gets back together for a reunion tour/single (cough pay cheque). Pussycat Dolls, Westlife, JLS, The Wanted, All Saints, Spice Girls, Girls Aloud, 5ive, Busted...the list goes on.

Money talks. Band members can make millions just to come back and do a press conference, a cheap single and a short tour.

It will be a long time for girlband or boyband to be a big again,, there isnt even many trying, I can see mixed bands coming first though.

There are a lot of big Kpop girl/boybands of course, particularly BTS & Blackpink, but I thin it would be hard to replicate their success with a group over here at the moment.

for some reason, pop groups seem to need to do tactical promotional efforts to get chart hits...

Like Little Mix's last #1 was 'Sweet Melody' and that only hit #1 after a campaign... the very same to get their Greatest Hits to #1 this weekend... it's weird they couldn't achieve these successions without campaigns.

McFly were notorious for doing campaigns back in the day.

I wouldn't really compare Little Mix's fan campaigns to McFly - Sweet Melody was a genuine hit and had spent seven weeks in the top ten when it hit #1. If the fans get the greatest hits to number one it will just be a nice number to add to their collection of #1s, but ultimately it won't make the greatest hits less of a successful campaign (in this day and age of low-selling albums), same with Sweet Melody. Had that not hit the top spot it still would've been one of the biggest hits of the year.

McFly on the other hand became notorious for having singles go top three only to fall out a few weeks later, remembered by only their fans. If you're going to pick a modern day act, it's that Japanese group, BLT or whatever their name is.

McFly didn’t have the benefit of streaming. Perhaps some of their songs would have had multiple top 10 weeks if their position was decided by streaming? Star Girl I imagine would have had a much better chart run.

Some of their songs yes, but a lot of their songs would've probably done arguably worse as they were fueled by fan sales.
