Did they not used to have some quite specific rules for who could qualify? E.g. "must not have had a top 20 single before 1st December of the year before"? (I'm making that up but I'm pretty sure there was something along those lines which clearly no longer applies given this year's nominees)

Yeah I thought the same, there was definitely some kind of rule like that

ideally Wet Leg would be #1 but I reckon it's gonna eb PinkPantheress
Yeh same here nothing they have released has stuck with me at all, seems quite generic if anything and yet the evening shows on R1 have been pushing her since summer!
:') at them putting both Central Cee and Mimi in the top 5, no doubt PinkPantheress will be one of the last two as well.
Did Baby Queen not release an album last June? Or are they wrapping that up as a mixtape or something?

The BBC Sound Of page on the BBC website says they’re only ineligible if:

They have been the lead artist on three UK Top Ten singles (features do not count) by 31st October 2021.

They have been the lead artist on one UK Top Five album by 31st October 2021 .

They have appeared on the Sound Of list previously.

Yeah that was billed as a mixtape, though even if it was an album she still would have been eligible as it didn’t make the top 5.

Central Cee is severely bending even those pretty minimally restrictive rules though considering he hit #2 in the album chart back in March  (I guess, unless the 'rules' are entirely for show and they didn't really follow them, they must be not counting that because of it technically being a mixtape but come on now xx).
Lmao did they just make those rules up on the spot to get around Central Cee and Mimi Webb and forget he actually had a Top 5 album.

oh really wanted Wet Leg to win... but at least they got #2

pretty sure the rules were much more strict a few years back, they have relaxed them so much, its like there are no rules at all :D

I agree and most of the artists are heavily supported on R1 already I find too which makes it less interesting in previous years it was genuinely interesting to hear their new music that year.

Shocked Wet Leg aren’t No1!

What a load of overrated hoofwankery. I just don't get it, it's basically someone making short jingles out of cheap Garage Band-esque beats and samples.

I'm even more bitter Wet Leg didn't get it now. Ah well, at least it wasn't Ms Webb I suppose.

The success rate of the Sound Of poll at predicting breakthrough artists seemed to be on the wane. Perhaps that's why they loosened the criteria.

Now it still has an element of predicting who might blow up this year (e.g. Wet Leg). But with the safety net of including artists who are already a success (e.g. Central Cee).

Bit of a cop out in my opinion!
