I've been aware of Dove Cameron for quite a while because I have (embarrassingly) seen the first 'Descendants' movie and more importantly really enjoyed her short stint in 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'. I saw her post about this a few times on her Instagram before it's release and the little snippets of it were starting to get stuck in my head so I decided to check it out when it was released and quite enjoyed it. It's not a great song by any means but it has a fun disco vibe and is easy to bop along to. It's entry into BJSC is what finally won me over on it and I was routing for it to do well.

Bebe gets her 4th and final entry in what has been a stellar year for her in my charts, if not in any official charts. This is a song that should not work at all on paper, Uzi feels like such an odd choice of guest-rap feature on a pop single due to his unique style and delivery but he's more restrained here and kinda fits in perfectly. This is just annoyingly catchy, I wasn't too keen when I first heard it but more listens from the album it ended up growing on me loads.

It took Bia a while from when I saw her as Ariana's support act in 2017 to getting her first hit in my charts but it was worth the wait with this great female rapper collab. The song almost charted earlier in the year but it wasn't until Nicki hopped on the remix that it eventually made an appearance and it's Nicki's strongest work in quite a while. I'm not sure I necessarily needed the redo of the DJ drop from 'Itty Bitty Piggy' but the rest of her verse is fire and her little back-and-forth with Bia in the 3rd verse is great where Nicki apes Bia's flow so naturally. I just wish that verse was a bit longer.

This is the only album track from Sour in this countdown and is one that I was happy managed to scrape a top 40 placement after other singles had gone to ACR. This comes at the perfect time in the album to break up a row of ballads with some upbeat production with drums and guitars despite the darker lyrics that focus on the insecurities and resentment that can arise due to social media. Olivia has really carved out a niche for herself with these rock-inspired teen-pop bops and I'm so excited to hear where she goes next with her second album, both lyrically and sonically.

Saweetie managed to get a top 40 debut in January with this fun collaboration with Doja Cat. Saweetie's parts are pretty weak but Doja provides an earworm of a chorus and a goofy verse that suits the tone of the song perfectly. They ended up releasing 5(!) different remixes of this song to target different markets, the first of which was with Stefflon Don which didn't make much of an impact on me. The last of the remixes featured a German rapper and worked well for them by bagging Doja & Saweetie 1 #1 single in that country.

The highlight track from ex-Fifth Harmony member Lauren's crazily underrated EP 'Prelude' lands at #43 and just about gives her and her features artist their highest positions in my EOY charts. This song is an intimate track about her depression with really personal and poignant lyrics, especially in the chorus where Lauren has said that she found the exact same words written in a diary she wrote in 2014 at 18. Vic Mensa is someone who I haven't heard anything from in a while but he really impressed me here with a great verse that (unlike a lot of guest rap verses) stays completely on topic and has some similarly affecting lyrics. This is a gorgeous track that deserved more people to have heard it.

For the purpose of my chart I've decided to count the new releases as the same song as the originals. This is the perfect storm of a Taylor song I didn't listen to loads at the time of release but I is still a song that I have so much nostalgia for which allowed it to be a smash hit in my charts this year. I'm not too attached the original to be able to hear the nuances of the re-recording but I feel like this version feels a little sharper.

Let's keep this short and sweet, much like the track. Not many artists would release a 2 minute interlude as the lead-single going into an album but J. Cole is someone who did it and it's absolute fire. The song is trademark Cole with an intelligent verse delivered with impact over a soulful-sampled beat. Not many verses end as hard this year as this one with the Pimp C/Nipsey Hussle bar and Cole keeps up the epicness with an outro that's bound to get you pumped.

Villain was not an immediate favourite from the album but as you can see from the chart run, it really stuck with me and eventually made my top 10 during the one of the most competitive times in my chart and ended up as my equal 15th most played track in 2021. I like the slightly novel perspective of the song where Maisie is saying that she is the 'villain' of her ex's story after has has found somebody new and the chorus is one that just grows and grows until it takes over your entire psyche. That's an overdramatic and convoluted way to say it gets stuck in your head.

I can certainly see why people would find this one boring, the beat is a complete tease. The simplistic, repetitive drum beat runs for about 4:30 of this 5 minute track, leaving you almost begging for a drop before going wild for the last 30 seconds. However, I think that the beat suits the song to a T and rather than being boring, I find it gives the song a sense of grandness that I'm not sure the lyrics particularly merit. Hearing the two together on a track is always going to elicit a feeling though and and this song demands for you to shout 'Guess who's going to jail tonight' while its on, I'm still a bit annoyed that this was robbed of a top 10 peak due to the streams of 'Pt.2' which is obviously, for all intents and purposes, just a remix not being combined with this version.

Giving Scattered a listen now - sounding quite nice, I like the jazz influences that build throughout the song!

I first heard a live version of this on my Spotify in 2020 and enjoyed it but never really thought about it again. Until, it reappeared on my Discovery Weekly playlist and then I was hooked. Megan oozes star-quality in this one, coming in at the second verse and completely bossing the rest of her song. It really ceases to be a Phony Ppl song and fully becomes Megan's song as soon as she lays her first vocal. That's not to take anything away from Elbee Thrie who sings the chorus as it is his smooth vocals that pull you in from the start. The chorus is one of the best of the decade so far and funky, disco-y vibe of the production feels so unique amongst RnB at the moment and I wished this could have somehow became a hit.

This is a trap-pop record that allows Lisa to highlight her rap skills and, in the video, her dance ability showing the world why she's Blackpink's main dancer. Lisa is a global star and this song just proves it.

I wasn't sure on this after the first few listens but it certainly won me over and by the time of the album I was loving it. This is brash, loud and one of the most hype records of the year. DJ Drama's shouted adlibs just add to excitement. The 'that's seven' adlib is a little throwaway moment but it's the sort of little addition that makes this such a replayable song. It took me a few listens to notice it but now it's the part of the track I look forward to the most when I give it a spin. Annoyingly, especially as the song is only 2 minutes, Tyler continues his trend of only including half the song in the official music video which means that I never really bother watching them from him.

Love Again can't quite match the #30 position of 'Levitating' last year but still ends up in the 40. I love the 'Future Nostalgia' album a lot more than her chart history here would suggest and her tour is one of my most anticipated moments of 2022. This one very notably uses the same sample as White Town's 'Your Woman' but with some added synths and beat to make it sound completely modern and fully matching the 'Future Nostalgia' brief.

It feels like it's been ages since AJ Tracey became the first 2021 #1 to drop out so far at #62 which just shows what a great bunch of #1s I had this year. Overall, I don't think that 'Evermore' was anywhere near as strong as 'Folklore' but it still certainly had its moments and Willow was its absolute peak. This is just a lovely love song with a folky feel that made it perfect for the winter season. There's something about this that just feels so smooth and polished. It flows flawlessly and is crafted to perfection.
