Itzy's production team always seem to have an ear for a great melody. Lyrically, I have no idea why they consider themselves to be in the mafia or why the randomly go 'ring ding ding ding' in the middle of the chorus like they're the Crazy Frog but I can forget about that as the trappy synths are great, Ryujin kills it in the video and Lia sounds absolutely amazing at the start of the bridge.

Like DL, this is a ballad from her but 'All I Want' is much more on the poppier side with that Disney feel. I think being catchy is a prerequisite for finishing this high in my countdown, but this song is REALLY catchy. It's one of those choruses I've had in my head all year long. Olivia plays the piano in the song, but it's the addition of the string instruments that give it that little extra sparkle.

This is unmistakably a Doja Cat song, there's no other artist who would make the track in this way. THe song oozes charisma and character with a (in contrast to the lurid nature of the lyrics) beautiful and playful mixture of both fast, hard-hitting and more sing-songy flows. Doja claimed that she was drunk in the studio when she recorded this one and that might go some way to explain the adlibs and background vocals in this song which can only be described as an assortment of moans and groans.

This is a lowkey bop. To be oxymoronic, it feels epically understated. The chorus is perfect to sing along with but isn't an obvious crowd-pleaser. Lyrically, it's about how her ex-husband was jealous of her success and and acts as a warning to his next partner to see the signs. I love the video to this one where it just behind the scenes clips of her singing the song while on her sets for the album's film. It matches the nice, breezy production of the song and just feels so natural and playful.

I remember the initial reaction to this didn't seem to be too positive which I found really surprising because I thought it was the most comfortable I've heard her on a song since the first album. I could tell that this was not going to become a massive hit but I'm so glad she went for a single that really leans in heavy to the Latin influences. This really sounds like a current, modern Gloria Estefan song and (even if it seems like no-one else is bothered) I am really excited to hear the album. This is now Camila's 2nd highest EOY position outside of Fifth Harmony but I think one of the hits from 'Romance' would have beat it had it not been a December release.

While it still has plenty of the charms and quirks that are favoured in K-Pop, this song feels like something a big-name western artist could have recorded and with it, scored a massive hit. It's such an infectious slice of disco pop that it's impossible not to fall for. This is just pure fun and it's so deserving of the small break-though it made into the UK charts, even if it still deserves more. I'm not sure why but from all the Korean girl-groups I've heard, this is the single that most sounds like something BTS would release. I checked out their follow-up single and it didn't really do anything for me unfortunately.

However, 'Raise It Up' is a solo Jadagrace song. She was discovered by LMFAO's Redfoo in 2021 and went on to have her own TV show 'The Jadagrace Show' and as the lyrics suggest, was once associated with Kidz Bop. However, I'm sure this is much better than all that. This is a great funky experimental rap song with some off-kilter production choices and a initially off-putting chorus with an adlib that stands out as sounding dodgy but eventually wins you over to sound perfect for the song. I've tried giving some of their other releases a go and unfortunately the male members of the group are just nowhere near as interesting and just sound a little generic in their raps.
January 19, 20223 yr 'Raise It Up' was my favorite of your entries too! I think I gave it max points and that still wasn't enough :( Maybe people just didn't give it enough listens to grow on them, since it has those off-putting parts as you say. Oh well... Glad to see 'Don't Go Yet' this high, even if the general public's not really here for Camila anymore I'm totally here for her owning her Latin influence even though it's not on-trend anymore...honestly would love to hear plenty more songs like this from her!

With 2 members going solo this year, Rosé unfortunately loses the war with Lisa's debut still to come. Perhaps because she is the only member of the group who is a native English speaker, being born to a Korean family in New Zealand and largely grown-up in Australia, but, unlike Jennie & Lisa's solos, 'On The Ground' doesn't feel at all very Blackpink. It's still a brilliant pop song but the production is a lot slower and restrained than we've come to expext from the group. But this style suits Rosé so well and while I can't wait for new music from them all together, I would love to hear more from her own her own too.

You'd think that two 70+ year olds forming a rap-duo would be novelty but in actuality, they are anything but. Bas, in particular, is better with the flows than most of the biggest names in the genre today. His flow at the start of his 2nd verse is the best I heard from anyone in 2021 and paired with his deep, gruff east-end accent it is absolutely perfect for drill! The lyrics are really there too. Some of the best punchlines and biggest punches of the year are on display here: that Turkish Barber line would make any drill rapper jealous.

She had been teasing this song's release for a while on her Instagram and I already had 'Booty so big. Lord, have mercy' stuck in my head for weeks before it's release. I've only just found out that that part is actually a sample from a song called 'Girls Off The Chain' by TT The Artist & Uniiqu3. Despite being released on the same week as Lisa's solo debut, this still managed to sneak a week at #1 that shows just how high the hype I had for this actually was. This was the perfect way to announce herself as a solo artist, it's ultra confident and sexy and allows her to own her sexuality with an instant-classic booty anthem I actually prefer the video version of this that has an extended bridge before the final chorus than the official version on Spotify. Can we have the follow-up and album soon now please Chlöe?

This is simply just a brilliant pop song with a catchy chorus that I have not got tired of one bit. The lyrics are fun and the little distortions on the vocals in the chorus are just the finishing touch. This one is going to be a fun one on tour in April. In fact, I have been flip-flopping between this and the song in 10th in my mind since I drafted the ordering. I wouldn't have really said that Itzy were necessarily one of my favourite but I think after 4 consecutive #1 singles with the the most recent 2 both spending multiple weeks at the top, I have to say I am now a bit of a stan. I would say that either Lia or Ryujin is my favourite member of the group but its Yuna that really stood-out on this track for me even if she probably has the least lines out of anyone. She just steals all the scenes of the video that she's in. This is another massive banger from Itzy and further solidifies their place as one of the most underrated groups out there. The top 10 begins on Saturday :0

This was by far the poppiest moment on the album and it delivers everything you'd want in a radio single. Summer glides through the track effortlessly with her trademark unique, smooth vocals and the production is much more upbeat and punchy than her usual singles. The album traces her turbulent relationship with London on da Track and this song is towards the start of their relationship where his ex was still contacting him and Summer sending her a warning. JT fits like a glove into this song with her energetic, flamboyant verse matching the wild and ratchet tone of the song. I love Summer's classical R&B moments but if she wants to give us the odd banger like this, then I certainly won't be complaining.

Tyler swaggers his way through his verse utmost confidence which alongside of the old-skool classic sample of 'Back Seat (Wit No Sheets)' by H-Town just makes the tracks sound so cool. There's not many people who have the swagger to pull off an opening line of 'you look malnourished' to a girl but somehow you never doubt that Tyler is going to get the girl he's chatting up in this song despite that start. YoungBoy might not have the best verse lyrically but he just sounds so good on this song. His verse is just so cheery and fun that it's guaranteed to leave you with a smile. Tyler, in fact, said that NBA singing 'think slow' is one of his favourite moments on the whole album. Ty doesn't contribute anymore than backing vocals but they sound heavenly layered in behind Tyler's and help make this one of the best hooks of the year. The only criticism is that it ends too soon! This is unfortunately another example of a Tyler video that cuts out half the song, despite it's already short length.

Fredo & Dave had already proved themselves a lethal combination with their official #1 single 'Funky Friday' in 2018, but this one took it to another level. They are both on red hot form on this one, going back and forth with verses that just seem to get better and better, with great schemes that go throughout the whole track. But the part that makes this standout the most is the video. This is by some distance the best music video of 2021 with a wonderfully crafted video that plays homage to some classic films and follows a the journey of a £50 note. The video plays in reverse and, while the note begins and ends in Fredo's possession, it has a murky and sleazy trek in between that has some effective twist and turns. It's honestly looks and plays better than a few big-budget Hollywood movies I've seen this year and makes an already grand song sound just that tad more epic. Huge shout-out to the director, Edem Wornoo.
