Released on New Year's Day 2021, Justin made it clear that 2021 was his year by dropping new single Anyone, the third from then-untitled album Justice. My hype was high and I had a good feeling about this song before its release - I'd liked both previous singles from Justice but was craving something more upbeat/anthemic, and Anyone delivered on all levels. With a soaring, euphoric production that builds and builds as the song goes on, Anyone was love at first listen. Justin's vocals are silky smooth and the video is one of his best, too. Of course, Anyone went straight in at #1 in my chart, becoming Justin's first chart-topper as a lead artist in over three years, and his first multi-week #1 since What Do You Mean? in 2015. The track set the tone for 2021 and resulted in Justin's highest EOY position ever, surpassing Sorry's #5 result. February 6, 20223 yr Author Songs: Top 300 3 Boy In Space - Sucker Punch | 7-5-1-3-1-2-4-1-2-5-7-12-27-21-19-22-27-27-34-35-33-29-17-18-21-25-27-29-30-30-31-36-28-36-30-... Once again, it's close but no cigar for Swedish popstar Boy In Space. After finishing 2nd in last year's countdown behind The Kid LAROI, it's a similar story this year, though Sucker Punch ultimately ends up one place lower than Caroline achieved last year. It's a pretty huge achievement, though - aside from Laroi himself, no other artist has ever made my EOY top 3 two years running, and Harry Styles is the only other artist to have made my top 3 twice on separate years. It's a testament to just how huge Boy In Space's music has been for me, but Sucker Punch is still a beast of its own. Initially just a track on the FRONTYARD EP, Sucker Punch was immediately the best performing of the five previously unheard tracks, racing into my top 10 at #7 in its opening week. It climbed to the top two weeks later, becoming Boy In Space's third #1 of four he managed in 2021. Though it was dethroned a week later, Sucker Punch spent two further non-consecutive weeks at the top, and spent a huge 11 weeks in my top 10 overall - those who follow my weekly chart will know that's a big achievement when it's so fast-moving! To this day, Sucker Punch hasn't left my chart, and it just reached its 40th week - the last song to have that many was Shawn Mendes' Stitches, which had 42 weeks, albeit non-consecutive, in 2015. Consecutively, it was Iggy Azalea's Fancy, which had 43 solid weeks in 2014! It's made all the more remarkable when you hear the song, too. Sucker Punch isn't even 2 minutes long - it clocks in at 1:57 - and its structure is somewhat unconventional without a particularly notable chorus. The production is immediately catchy from the opening notes, though, and the slightly humorous lyrics ("left a note to your brother, he called me a motherf*cker") and the charismatic vocal performance of Boy In Space himself. It's solidified itself as a contender for my favourite track from him (Caroline remains stiff competition of course), and it's been quite unlucky not to reach the top here - it ran into two even bigger behemoths...! I'm not sure I'd ever have called that the guy who sang Frontside Ollie would go on to have a hit as huge and year-defining as this, but Finnish pop superstar Robin Packalen has had quite the career trajectory. One of Finland's biggest names in pop music, Robin's had a series of hits in his home country - Frontside Ollie was the first of four #1 singles and a further nine top 10s, the most recent of which came in 2019. Most of those were in Finnish, including Frontside Ollie, which made #6 in my chart a couple of years after its release. Despite his success in the charts, he didn't ever score another top 40 hit for me, until I heard a track from late-2020 EP Rest In Beat PM, Better Than That, and it became a top 5 hit at the start of 2021. With a newly ignited interest in his music, Hard to Love instantly caught my eye when it was released in March 2021. Featuring Alex Mattson, a producer (and occasional singer) who'd worked with Robin on one of the Rest In Beat PM tracks, Hard to Love is quite simply pop perfection. With epic production that's dramatic in places and dancefloor-ready in others, Hard to Love is a song packed full of hooks. The chorus is the best part of the track, with Robin's vocals soaring over the building production, and the post-chorus hook only seals the deal. It's basically the best Eurovision song that never made it to the contest, or even a national selection...! (though Alex Mattson is now a member of Blind Channel, who represented Finland at Eurovision last year - funny when their music is effectively the complete opposite to what Alex created on Hard to Love!). Hard to Love immediately became Robin's highest charting single in my chart, debuting at #3 ahead of Better Than That's #4 peak. In week 2, it climbed to #1 and remained there for three weeks, holding off three pretty big hits from Gwen Stefani, Tom Odell and Regard, Troye Sivan & Tate McRae. In total, Hard to Love notched up 35 weeks in my top 40, which speaks volumes of how much the song's held up for me. I sent it to BJSC last year and it gave me by FAR my best result of 2021, placing fourth! Was amazing to see it do so well and it was just about the only good thing to take from BJSC last year :kink: Nevertheless, Hard to Love announced Robin as a force to be reckoned with, and he's achieved another #1 single since, so what will 2022 bring? I don't even think you have to be a particularly close follower of my posts to know how huge The Kid LAROI has been for me over the past couple of years. Debut mixtape F*CK LOVE defined 2020 as he became the first artist to achieve my favourite song, album AND artist awards in the same year, as well as accumulating five #1s quicker than any artist in my chart's history. Hopes were high for 2021, it's safe to say, and I was intrigued to see whether Laroi would be able to keep the hype up. The year started with a series of delays for Laroi's next single, initially intended to be the first single from his debut studio album before ultimately becoming the third and final part of the F*CK LOVE trilogy. STILL CHOSE YOU was the expected lead, but that was eventually replaced... by something that would turn out to be not just Laroi's biggest hit yet, but one of the biggest streaming hits ever. STAY was first teased in late 2020 when Laroi played a snippet at a Genius event he took part in. I loved the snippet from the start - the melody of the chorus was unbeatable and I knew it had potential to be great in its final form, if it ever arrived. Laroi teased it numerous times on social media before, and confirmed in a Zoom "hangout" with many fans in attendance (including myself!) that it was going to have a feature. A leaked demo came with Justin Bieber on the track, and I was more hyped than ever - I liked their previous collaboration Unstable, though I knew they could do better, and STAY was the perfect track to show off the chemistry between the two friends. I didn't listen to the leak but my hype was bigger than ever! Finally, STAY dropped in July 2021, and it was everything I wanted it to be and more. Laroi's vocals were almost unchanged from the demo but that was no bad thing - he's never sounded better than against the pulsating beat of STAY. It's the same for Justin, in fact - his verse is smooth and his voice blends perfectly with Laroi's, and their chemistry in the video is part of what makes the song so magical. I think it's the first big-name Bieber collaboration that hasn't really underwhelmed me (like those with Shawn Mendes, Ariana Grande and even Cody Simpson somewhat did, as much as I still liked them). In the first week, I played the song exactly 200 times - the most I'll have played any song in a 7-day period in years! STAY, of course, debuted at #1 in my chart, which was also my landmark 500th chart, so it was doubly special. STAY, err, stayed at the top spot for six weeks initially, before dropping and returning twice more in 2021 for a total of eight weeks - matching both the consecutive and overall records. Since its release, STAY hasn't left my top 10. This week, it celebrated its 30th week there - the most for any song ever. In January, it returned to #1, becoming the first song to ever spend a 9th week at #1, overtaking the record it shared with Girls Aloud's Something New. In its third week, STAY led a historic top 10 where Laroi held 9 of the 10 positions, and is one of the 31 tracks to chart from the full F*CK LOVE project - the entire tracklist. The records it's broken don't stop at my weekly chart, though. Laroi becomes the first ever artist to score two EOY #1s, and Justin finally achieves his first EOY #1 after appearing in my first EOY top 10 back in 2012. Laroi's actually completed the clean sweep for a second year running, swiping the album and artist awards as well. The crazy thing is that 30 weeks on, STAY still has life in the tank. It's now my second most played song on last.fm, just 22 plays behind #1 - nothing has come even remotely close to toppling Belle Amie (!! don't judge) in years despite it not being a song I revisit much. I can't wait to see what STAY's run will look like when it eventually drops out of my chart, but that's not looking to be any time soon, especially with new music on the horizon and a world tour later this year, at which I'll be meeting Laroi! STAY defined my year in a way no song has managed in a long time, and quite honestly I called this EOY #1 back on the first day I heard it. With its insane global success (it's the fastest song in history to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify, the longest running #1 on the Global 200 and the second longest running #1 in Australian chart history), one thing's for sure: Laroi's here to stay. Almost there :lol: things have slowed down a bit in the last couple of weeks as there have been a load of new 2022 songs stealing my attention! (similarly, F*CK LOVE is now less than 200 plays off being my most-played album, which would be the first change in over 10 years, but it's stalled a bit at the final hurdle :lol: will get there eventually but not as quickly as I thought!)
