I didn't actually know who they were lol just wikipedia searched them... they have released 17 albums and 9 EPs

I don't get why they were nominated though as they broke through in 1996 with their first album? Surely their breakthrough would be 1997 Brits... the ones that Spice Girls were ripped off at not getting the British Breakthrough that year

Their first time charting in the Top 100 album chart was in September 1998, with their third album - it reached #12. Their debut album from 1996 initially missed the chart, and their second album in 1997 only peaked at #191. The debut album was re-released in July 1999 and reached #13 - that being five months after the Brit Award win. So technically speaking they did breakthrough in 1998 by having their first major chart peak!

These were all the acts up for British Breakthrough, and chart peaks they acheived prior to 16th February 1999 (the date of the Brit Awards):

Belle & Sebastian [singles Chart: #59, #41, #32 | Albums Chart: #12]

Another Level [singles Chart: #6, #1, #5, #2 | Albums Chart: #13]

Billie Piper [singles Chart: #1, #1, #3 | Albums Chart: #14]

Cleopatra [singles Chart: #3, #4, #5 | Albums Chart: #20]

Cornershop [singles Chart: #92, #1, #23 | Albums Chart: #17]

Five [singles Chart: #10, #4, #3, #2, #2 | Albums Chart: #1]

Gomez [singles Chart: #44, #45, #35 | Albums Chart: #11]

Hinda Hicks [singles Chart: #25, #19, #14, #31 | Albums Chart: #20]

Propellerheads [singles Chart: #69, #40, #7, #86, #53 | Albums Chart: #6]

Steps [singles Chart: #14, #6, #2, #1 | Albums Chart: #2]

Based on commercial success, I would say Five and Steps were the most worthy of winning this - but a lot of the time, the Brits are more geared towards perceived "cooler" artists. Apparently this award was sponsored by Radio One but compiled from online votes. How many young Steps fans had internet access by early 1999? On this basis, I can see why Belle & Sebastian managed it... because their fan base was supposedly university students, primarily. Even if it had been voted by a panel, I bet Steps would have been snubbed that way too!

I thought Faye might have won the solo single,

Really? I'd say that her solo single is a relatively obscure pick (well, that's proved by the result), compared to thinking of H & Claire and Lisa's more high profile releases. Maybe if the game was Pointless rather than Family Fortunes, then Faye's single would have been a good choice.

Just to tease a bit longer (I’m in Nando’s as we speak!) - everyone scores some points with the next question… but is it a landslide?

Don’t want reveal them all in one go - what’s the point of a discussion if there’s nothing to discuss.

Up next: A single from Steptacular! … suppose I’d better get on with it despite the fact I’m a teacher and work 11 hours a day but that’s okay because what’s a life.

I thought this would split votes even more than the previous but, as we are beginning to see, we are a consistent bunch. Three songs didn’t even get a vote - Say You’ll Be Mine, After The Love Has Gone and When I Said Goodbye - nothing.

Two songs got three votes a piece, but your winner with four votes is: Tragedy! Surprised? I am actually…

3 - Jay, Spiceboy, Run For Cover, London

2 - Yobnedor, Lukuzz, awardinary

2 - Nina West, Global Funq, Feel The Fever

I'm glad that answer wasn't a tragedy for me (and Spiceboy, Run For Cover & London!)

I thought with Faye been the most popular member here people may have voted, that aside i really like the song myself.

Up next: A song with a number in it!

You could have had One Less Bell To Answer. You could have had A Million Years. You even could have had A Hundred Years of Winter. All zero votes. You could have had One For Sorrow - which got one vote! (Sorry, no points there!) I’m sure by now it’s pretty obvious what won but if not… it’s time to begin so count it in…

Your winner with nine votes is: 5,6,7,8!

With 9 votes, it’s pretty obvious how the scoring for this one goes down but just in case we aren’t sure:

8 - Jay, Spiceboy, Run For Cover, London, Yobnedor, awardinary, Nina West, Global Funq, Feel The Fever

0 - Lukuzz (sorry!)

I was debating between 5,6,7,8 and one for sorrow the other songs never even entered my head  Interesting to see how close it is so far!

I think that’s what most people did!

I was close to picking One For Sorrow then suddenly remembered 5,6,7,8 existed. Haha.

I did wonder if 5,6,7,8 would be overlooked because it’s too obvious but nah, we all came through!

(Except Lukuzz)

haha how rude for some reason I tried to pick the non obvious and forgot completely how the game works, duh !
